To turn a photo into retro ASCII art, use an image-to-ASCII converter: it reduces the image to a grid, estimates the brightness of each cell, and replaces each cell with a character of similar visual density. For a quick one-off, use a browser converter; for repeatable or batch work, use a command-line tool. A clear subject, strong light-dark contrast, and a width that fits your destination usually matter more than piling on effects.
Make ASCII art from a photo in a browser
- Choose a suitable image. Start with a distinct subject and clear contrast. Faces, logos, and silhouettes are often easier to recognize than busy scenes or low-contrast photos. Cropping toward the main subject can help it occupy more of the output grid.
- Open a converter and select the image. Pic to ASCII supports JPG, PNG, and WebP, and lists a 15 MB input limit. Its page describes processing the image in the browser. These are specifications and privacy claims from the tool’s publisher, not an independent audit, and may change. Pic to ASCII
- Adjust the character ramp and tone. Characters with more filled-in shapes, such as
@and#, tend to look darker than periods or spaces on a light background. The result depends on the selected character set, font, and background. If the art will appear on a dark background, use inversion if the converter offers it. TxtArt also describes contrast and dithering controls; there is no single best setting for every image. TxtArt - Set the width for where the art will go. More columns can retain detail, but make the text wider and more likely to wrap. TxtArt suggests about 60–80 columns for a README or terminal, and fewer for phone chat; treat that as its guidance, not a universal limit. Preview the result in the actual destination when possible. Why some photos convert better than others
Most converters average or otherwise estimate tone within each cell of the output grid. Fine details can disappear when several light and dark features are collapsed into one character. A small face, thin outline, tiny lettering, crowded background, or subtle tonal variation may therefore become indistinct. A simple subject with a strong separation between light and dark has a better chance of remaining recognizable at a modest text width. TxtArt identifies faces, logos, silhouettes, and strong light-dark splits as promising subjects, and warns that busy or low-contrast images can lose definition. TxtArt
Width and character shape change the image
Text characters are not square: in typical monospace fonts, a character cell is taller than it is wide. Without aspect-ratio correction, the converted image can look vertically stretched. TxtArt recommends correcting for this, where the converter provides the option. TxtArt
Dithering can soften tonal bands
Dithering distributes rounding error among nearby cells to break up flat bands of tone. TxtArt describes Floyd–Steinberg dithering as sharper and Atkinson as higher-contrast and suitable for line art. These are the site’s recommendations; the result still depends on the image and settings. TxtArt

Plain ASCII, Braille, and color are different output modes
Plain ASCII uses characters from a standard text set to suggest tone. Braille-based output can represent finer patterns, but it is not plain ASCII and depends on terminal and font support. The ascii-image-converter README warns that Braille requires UTF-8-capable support. ANSI color sequences are another extension: TxtArt notes that they render only in compatible terminals or contexts. AsciiArt.App likewise describes ordinary conversion as local, while noting that its optional AI image-generation feature sends prompts to Google.
