That is not the same as a promise that no related data exists anywhere or that a sender could never be identified in any circumstance. Tumblr’s general legal guidance separately describes information it may store and when it may disclose non-public information.
What Tumblr means by an anonymous ask
Tumblr’s Getting Started on Tumblr guide puts it plainly: “We (staff) don’t know who sent you that anonymous ask. It’s anonymous.” The recipient is not given the sender’s Tumblr identity with the ask.

Tumblr’s Ask guide describes sending as a logged-in user choosing either their account or an anonymous phantom. The anonymous option is available only when the receiving blog allows anonymous asks. This feature hides the account identity in the ask; it does not establish that no data is collected or that identification is impossible under every conceivable circumstance.

Tumblr says staff do not know who sent an anonymous ask. Separately, its Legal Guidelines describe categories of information the service may store, including basic account details, a date- and time-stamped IP address associated with account or blog creation, and IP address data related to site creation, posts, and revisions.

Tumblr’s legal guidance says disclosure of non-public information generally requires valid legal process and describes an emergency exception. These general data and disclosure statements do not show that Tumblr can retrieve the sender of any particular anonymous ask. Nor do they establish that every ask is perfectly untraceable or routinely traceable. An IP address is not, by itself, proof of a person’s identity.
What happens when you receive one?
An ask is a one-off question-and-answer feature, rather than a two-way conversation like messaging. Tumblr says asks can be published and reblogged. Anonymous asks cannot be answered privately: a reply has to be published publicly. That limitation follows from Tumblr’s statement that it does not know who sent the anonymous ask, so it cannot route a private response to that sender.

How to control anonymous asks on your blog
The receiving blog must have asks enabled, and it must allow anonymous asks for the anonymous option to appear. Tumblr’s guide explains enabling asks in blog settings and checking “Allow anonymous questions” on the web. Settings and labels can change, so use your blog’s current settings rather than relying on a fixed sequence of app taps.

Turn anonymous asks off
If you want to keep asks but stop receiving anonymous ones, turn off the anonymous-ask option in your blog settings. Tumblr’s Blocking Users guide also describes disabling anonymous asks there.

Block an anonymous ask
Tumblr says blocking an anonymous ask blocks the IP address of the blog that sent it. That blog can no longer send anonymous asks, but it can still interact non-anonymously. Tumblr’s Getting Started guide says the IP block cannot be undone. This is a technical block, not identification of a person or a guarantee that the same person cannot interact through another route.

Tumblr’s Ask guide lists a limit of 10 asks per hour, with no more than five of them anonymous, and a 500-character limit. These are Tumblr’s stated feature limits and can change. It also says that links, paragraph breaks, special characters, emoticons, ellipses, missing spaces between sentences, or a recipient’s network-level block may affect delivery.

If an ask does not arrive, check that the recipient allows asks and anonymous asks, that the message fits the stated limit, and that its formatting or links are not interfering. A failure to arrive does not by itself indicate that the sender’s account identity was exposed.
