What is the Tuft & Needle Original Mattress II?
The Original Mattress II is Tuft & Needle’s current all-foam version of the Original, distinct from both the earlier Tuft & Needle Original and the separate Original Hybrid II. The manufacturer describes the II as its firmest all-foam Original, with a 12-inch profile. Its listed sizes are Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.

Tuft & Needle’s own FAQ says, “The Mattress II is a Firm feel for structured support best for back and stomach sleepers.” That is the brand’s positioning. RTINGS describes its tested Queen as medium-firm, illustrating that a manufacturer’s firmness label and an independent reviewer’s impression are not the same measure.

Back and stomach sleepers
RTINGS found stronger support for some lighter back and stomach sleepers. Its review also cautions that support was weaker for many average-weight and heavier sleepers. These are findings from the review’s test unit, not a guarantee of how every person will experience the mattress.
Side sleepers
Pressure relief is a notable concern for some side sleepers. RTINGS reports that lighter side sleepers may receive little cushioning at the shoulder and arm, while heavier side sleepers sink farther and may get more cushioning. The mattress is therefore not a safe assumption for every side sleeper, especially anyone who prioritizes a plush, pressure-relieving surface.

Responsive feel and edge support
RTINGS highlights responsiveness and edge support as strengths. The responsive, less deeply enveloping feel may appeal to people who prefer not to sink far into foam. Those positives do not erase the fit limitations tied to sleeping position and body weight; consider pressure relief and support alongside surface feel and edge support when comparing options.
What is inside the mattress?
Tuft & Needle lists four elements: a cooling cover, T&N Adaptive foam, support foam, and base foam. The company describes its Adaptive foam as responsive and breathable. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements establishing how cool the mattress will sleep for a particular person.

How is the Original II different from the older Original?
According to Tuft & Needle, the Original II is two inches taller than the former Original, and the new version was adjusted to feel slightly firmer based on customer feedback. Reviews of the older Original should not be treated as reviews of the II: they concern a different model generation, and the II has its own construction and fit findings.

Tuft & Needle’s direct product page advertises a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty covering manufacturing and workmanship defects. These are the terms advertised by the manufacturer for its direct offer; do not assume that a marketplace listing carries identical trial, return, or warranty terms.

A box spring is not required, but Tuft & Needle calls for a solid, supportive foundation. Its examples are a platform bed, slatted frame, or adjustable base. The company also offers a washable waterproof protector that fits mattresses up to 14 inches deep. That protector is optional, and the stated fit does not establish that every third-party cover will fit properly.

The most important caution is fit: RTINGS’ findings suggest that side-sleeping pressure relief and support for many average-weight or heavier sleepers may be limited.
