TSMC and Nvidia are not interchangeable semiconductor investments. TSMC is a pure-play foundry: it manufactures chips designed by other companies. Nvidia designs and sells accelerated-computing platforms and products, with data-center activity accounting for most of its latest reported revenue. TSMC therefore fits a thesis built around advanced manufacturing capacity and broad customer demand, while Nvidia fits a thesis built around accelerated computing, artificial intelligence infrastructure and the spending required to deploy it.

Neither business can be called the better stock from operating results alone. The latest figures cover different fiscal periods, and a valuation verdict requires same-date share prices, forward earnings or cash-flow estimates and an investor’s tolerance for concentration, cyclicality and policy risk.

Start with the business-model difference

The central distinction is where each company sits in the semiconductor value chain. TSMC provides process technology, fabs and production capacity to customers that design their own chips. Its 2025 annual report describes this pure-play foundry model as the foundation of its business: TSMC does not sell a competing branded processor to its customers; it manufactures the designs that customers bring to production.

Nvidia is a platform and product company. Its fiscal 2026 filing describes two reportable segments—Compute & Networking and Graphics—and four market platforms: Data Center, Gaming, Professional Visualization and Automotive. The company combines chip designs, systems, networking, software and development tools into accelerated-computing platforms sold to customers.

That difference changes what an investor is buying. A TSMC shareholder is primarily exposed to wafer demand, process leadership, factory utilization, pricing and the breadth of customer end markets. An Nvidia shareholder is primarily exposed to demand for its architecture and systems, customers’ ability to build data centers, product transitions, supply availability and the durability of accelerated-computing spending.

How the companies are connected

TSMC can manufacture chips designed by Nvidia, making the two companies commercially connected even though they have different economic roles. On June 1, 2026, Nvidia announced that TSMC uses Nvidia computing and artificial-intelligence technologies in fab workloads such as computational lithography, simulation, process control and inspection. That is Nvidia’s description of the collaboration, not an independent performance test; it does, however, illustrate how a chip designer and a leading foundry can be customers, suppliers and technology collaborators in the same ecosystem.

The relationship does not remove investment differences. TSMC serves many customers and end markets, whereas Nvidia’s recent growth is much more concentrated in data-center infrastructure. A strong product cycle for Nvidia can increase demand for leading-edge manufacturing, but TSMC’s results also depend on orders unrelated to Nvidia.

What a TSMC investment thesis is really betting on

Advanced manufacturing capacity

The TSMC case starts with manufacturing scale and process capability. Customers outsource production so they can access advanced process technology and capacity without owning an equivalent network of fabs. If demand for leading-edge and specialty chips grows across several applications, a foundry with available capacity can participate in that growth without having to pick which customer’s end product wins.

This is a broad-exposure thesis, not a guarantee of diversification. TSMC’s customers still respond to the same electronics, cloud and industrial cycles, and leading-edge capacity can become a source of pressure when orders slow.

Demand beyond one application

TSMC reported that AI-related demand remained robust entering 2026 despite macroeconomic uncertainty. AI is important to the current outlook, but the foundry model also reaches other chip categories and end markets. An investor who wants exposure to semiconductor production across multiple designers may prefer this breadth to a single platform vendor’s product cycle.

Manufacturing economics and margins

Fabs carry substantial fixed costs. TSMC’s annual report warns that a demand slowdown can reduce factory utilization and hurt margins because many manufacturing expenses do not fall in proportion to wafer starts. The company reported a 59.9% gross margin and 50.8% operating margin for 2025, but those are results for that period, not a promise that margins will remain at those levels.

Utilization matters in both directions. When demand is strong, spreading fixed costs over more wafers can support profitability. When demand weakens, underused equipment and facilities can make the decline in earnings sharper than the change in revenue.

Risks specific to the foundry thesis

  • End-market demand: weaker orders from customers can reduce wafer starts and factory utilization.
  • Average selling price pressure: customers and competitors can pressure prices even when a process remains technically attractive.
  • Execution and yield: moving a new process into volume production requires reliable yields and on-time execution.
  • Competition: other foundries and customers’ internal manufacturing plans can affect pricing and share.
  • Geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty: trade policy, regional tensions and economic slowdowns can affect both capital projects and customer orders.

These risks mean that TSMC is not simply a low-volatility version of a chip designer. It is a capital-intensive manufacturer whose earnings can respond strongly to utilization and investment cycles.

What a Nvidia investment thesis is really betting on

Accelerated computing and AI infrastructure

Nvidia’s latest results show how concentrated the current thesis is. Data Center generated US$193.7 billion of the company’s US$215.9 billion fiscal 2026 revenue, according to its FY2026 Form 10-K. The investment case therefore depends heavily on customers continuing to buy accelerated-computing systems, networking and related software for data-center workloads.

This concentration can produce exceptional growth when cloud providers, enterprises and other infrastructure buyers expand capacity. It also means that a change in data-center budgets, deployment schedules or the economics of AI services can affect a large share of Nvidia’s revenue at once.

Platform economics rather than a single chip

Nvidia sells an integrated platform. The product cycle can include accelerators, networking, systems, software and developer support rather than one stand-alone component. That integration can make switching costly for customers and can help the company capture more value per deployed system, but it also increases the complexity of design, manufacturing, supply planning and transitions between generations.

Reported profitability and concentration

Nvidia reported fiscal 2026 revenue of US$215.9 billion, net income of US$120.067 billion, a 71.1% gross margin and diluted earnings per share of US$4.90. These figures are company-reported and correspond to Nvidia’s fiscal year, not TSMC’s calendar 2025. The high gross margin reflects the economics of a successful platform cycle; it should be evaluated alongside the company’s dependence on infrastructure customers and rapid product transitions.

Risks specific to the Nvidia thesis

  • Data-center capacity and energy: customers need physical facilities, electricity and financing before they can deploy more accelerators.
  • Customer capital: a change in infrastructure budgets can delay or reduce orders even when long-term interest in AI remains high.
  • Product transitions: moving customers and suppliers to new architectures creates execution, inventory and timing risk.
  • Supply and manufacturing concentration: Nvidia relies on a limited set of sophisticated manufacturing and packaging partners, so disruptions can constrain shipments.
  • Export controls: policy changes can restrict which products may be sold into particular markets.
  • Inventory and purchase commitments: Nvidia’s filing reports a US$4.5 billion charge related to H20 excess inventory and purchase obligations after export-licensing requirements affected demand.

Those risks are not theoretical footnotes. They show how a policy decision or a customer’s infrastructure bottleneck can affect revenue, inventory and margins even when the underlying technology remains in demand.

Comparing the two exposures directly

Investment question TSMC Nvidia
What you own economically Manufacturing capacity and process technology used by customers Accelerated-computing platforms, products and supporting software
Primary demand signal Customer wafer orders across chip end markets, including AI Data-center and accelerated-computing deployment
Main operating sensitivity Fixed costs, factory utilization, yields and pricing Product transitions, supply availability and concentrated infrastructure spending
Important external constraints Geopolitics, competition, demand cycles and execution Energy, data-center capacity, customer capital, export rules and supply chain
How to frame valuation Use current price and estimates against foundry growth, margins and capital needs Use current price and estimates against platform growth, concentration and transition risk

The table is a framework, not a ranking. A higher margin or faster recent growth does not automatically make one security more attractive, because the businesses have different capital requirements, fiscal calendars and risk distributions.

Which thesis fits which investor?

Choose the TSMC thesis when breadth of manufacturing demand matters most

TSMC may fit an investor who wants exposure to the “picks and shovels” side of chip production: the factories and process capabilities that multiple designers use. This approach can make sense when your thesis is that advanced semiconductor content will grow across several applications and that a leading foundry can earn attractive returns by supplying those designs.

You must be comfortable with capital expenditure, utilization swings, pricing pressure and geopolitical uncertainty. The thesis fails if customers cut orders for long enough to leave expensive capacity underused or if process execution and competition erode the expected advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Nvidia thesis when accelerated-computing growth is the central belief

Nvidia may fit an investor who believes spending on AI and accelerated computing will continue to expand and that Nvidia can retain a leading platform position while customers build the required infrastructure. The upside is more directly tied to the current AI build-out than TSMC’s broader foundry exposure.

You must also accept concentration. With US$193.7 billion of US$215.9 billion fiscal 2026 revenue from Data Center, the thesis is highly sensitive to data-center budgets, energy availability, export policy and the pace of product transitions. A slowdown in infrastructure spending can matter even if demand from gaming or other platforms remains healthy.

Use a blended thesis only if you can explain the overlap

Owning both does not create two independent bets. Nvidia’s products can drive demand for TSMC manufacturing, so the holdings may rise and fall with the same AI infrastructure cycle. The combination can give you exposure to both a platform vendor and a manufacturer, but it also increases exposure to the semiconductor and data-center ecosystem. Treat the pair as complementary positions only after identifying which risks remain common.

How to make a valuation decision responsibly

The available operating data do not establish which stock is cheaper. Current share prices and comparable forward valuation multiples were not verified for the same date, and the companies report on different fiscal calendars. Do not infer undervaluation from revenue, net income or margin comparisons alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying either security, collect the following on one consistent date:

  1. Price and share count: record the actual market price, split history and diluted share count used in your calculation.
  2. Forward earnings or cash flow: use estimates for the same forecast period rather than mixing TSMC calendar results with Nvidia fiscal results.
  3. Growth assumptions: write down the revenue, margin and earnings growth required to justify the price.
  4. Capital intensity: for TSMC, test how returns change if utilization or wafer pricing falls; for Nvidia, test the effect of inventory, supply constraints and transition costs.
  5. Scenario range: model a base case, a slower-demand case and a policy or supply disruption case.
  6. Currency and listing: make sure the quotation, reporting currency and any depositary-receipt conversion are handled consistently.

A valuation is only as credible as its assumptions. If the Nvidia case requires uninterrupted data-center spending and flawless product transitions, or the TSMC case requires permanently high utilization, make those dependencies visible rather than embedding them in a single optimistic forecast.

A practical decision process

  1. Write the one-sentence thesis. Example: “Advanced chip demand will broaden across customers and TSMC will monetize the manufacturing bottleneck,” or “AI infrastructure spending will compound and Nvidia will retain platform leadership.”
  2. Map the revenue exposure. For TSMC, list the end markets and customer concentration you are relying on. For Nvidia, start with Data Center and then identify what portion of the thesis depends on other platforms.
  3. Identify the failure condition. TSMC’s failure condition may be sustained under-utilization, pricing pressure or execution problems. Nvidia’s may be a data-center spending pause, export restriction, supply shortfall or unsuccessful product transition.
  4. Check the reporting period. Label every financial figure as TSMC 2025, TSMC second quarter 2026 or Nvidia fiscal 2026 before comparing it.
  5. Apply a valuation discipline. Compare same-date prices with estimates and run downside cases; do not call either stock cheap without that work.
  6. Set monitoring triggers. Decide in advance which changes would invalidate the thesis, such as falling utilization, weaker orders, slower data-center deployment, a material margin decline or a new export restriction.

What to monitor after investing

TSMC indicators

  • Quarterly revenue and gross margin relative to the company’s guidance.
  • Evidence of factory utilization, pricing and yield performance as new processes ramp.
  • Customer demand across AI and non-AI end markets, rather than one headline application.
  • Capital spending and the return expected from new capacity.
  • Geopolitical, trade and macroeconomic developments that could alter production or customer plans.

Nvidia indicators

  • Data Center revenue growth and the share of total revenue it represents.
  • Customer access to data-center capacity, electricity and capital.
  • Gross-margin behavior during architecture and system transitions.
  • Inventory, purchase commitments and the availability of advanced manufacturing and packaging.
  • Export-control changes and their effect on products, orders and reserves.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Comparing unlike fiscal years: TSMC’s 2025 results and Nvidia’s fiscal 2026 results are not the same period.
  • Treating a foundry as a chip brand: TSMC manufactures customer designs; it does not have Nvidia’s platform-sales model.
  • Assuming AI exposure is identical: Nvidia’s revenue is directly concentrated in Data Center, while TSMC supplies customers across a wider set of markets.
  • Ignoring fixed costs: TSMC’s margins can be sensitive to utilization, even after a strong year.
  • Ignoring infrastructure constraints: Nvidia’s customers need energy, facilities and capital to turn demand into shipped systems.
  • Calling one stock cheaper without data: operating results alone cannot establish a current valuation advantage.
  • Treating management expectations as guarantees: TSMC’s expectation of robust AI demand entering 2026 and Nvidia’s growth outlook remain subject to demand, policy and execution risk.

Bottom line: match the security to the claim you are making

TSMC is the more direct expression of a thesis that advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity will remain valuable across a broad customer base. Its strengths come with fixed costs, utilization sensitivity, capital requirements and geopolitical exposure.

Nvidia is the more direct expression of a thesis that accelerated computing and AI data-center deployment will keep expanding and that Nvidia can continue to supply the winning platform. Its strengths come with unusually concentrated Data Center exposure, product-transition complexity, supply constraints, energy requirements and export-control risk.
