Which TSA officers are affected?
The reported change concerns officers checking travel documents and IDs at checkpoint entrances. ABC News and Reuters reported on September 29, 2026, that chairs were being removed at checkpoints nationwide; The Washington Post described the change on October 1. This is not a report that all TSA employees must stand throughout their shifts or that seating has been removed from every TSA work area.
The coverage establishes the agency’s announcement, but does not include the underlying TSA directive. It does not specify an exact effective date, exceptions, accommodation procedures, or whether implementation is consistent at every checkpoint. The Washington Post observed seven officers processing IDs at Reagan National Airport’s North Security Checkpoint standing without chairs during a late-afternoon rush; that is an observation at one place and time, not evidence of nationwide implementation.
Why does TSA say officers must stand?
A TSA spokesperson told ABC News and The Washington Post that the change is intended to reinforce alertness, security posture, and hospitality. The spokesperson said: “This welcome change reinforces both our security posture and our commitment to hospitality by having these officers on their feet and alert.”

The agency also cited fitness for duty: “All officers must meet fitness for duty requirements to be capable of performing their vital national security function while simultaneously creating a welcoming and professional environment for travelers.” The reporting presents these as TSA’s stated reasons; it does not independently demonstrate that removing chairs improves screening outcomes or the traveler experience.
What does the TSA union say?
AFGE TSA Council 100 said officers were not consulted and argued that chairs provide ergonomic and safety support for workers who stand and walk on hard surfaces. The union said it was urging members to contact congressional leaders and was moving aggressively to address the change.

In remarks reported by ABC News, the union called the move “a disregard for employee rights and safety” and said it reflected “a broad pattern of TSA’s true consideration of the employees who keep our nation safe.” The Washington Post quoted the union saying, “TSA is treating this matter like it is a privilege,” adding: “It is not; it is basic safety and common decency for the workforce.” These are the union’s criticisms; the coverage does not resolve the underlying workplace dispute.
What are the ergonomic concerns?
Kathryn Sawyer, a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist and assistant professor at Tufts University, told The Washington Post that static standing can strain the feet, ankles, and knees, and recommended that officers be able to change positions frequently. She said: “Going from one static position to another static position is truly not the best choice they could have made.” This is an expert comment in the newspaper’s report, not a TSA-specific study or formal agency safety finding.

Does the labor framework explain the chair change?
A separate TSA announcement distributed through PR Newswire said a new labor framework would take effect January 11, 2026, rescinding the 2024 collective bargaining agreement and other determinations. Adam Stahl, Senior Official Performing the Duties of TSA Deputy Administrator, said Transportation Security Officers should focus on keeping travelers safe. The chair-policy coverage does not establish that this framework legally caused or specifically authorized chair removal, so the two developments should not be treated as directly connected.
