Choose X if you need broad reach, rapid discovery and the largest mix of journalists, officials, organizations and eyewitnesses. Choose Truth Social if your intended audience is concentrated in Trump’s political movement and you value a more focused conservative community. Neither service verifies the truth of everything in its feed, so consequential claims should be checked against primary documents, trusted news organizations and official government sources.
The difference is scale and network composition, not a simple “free speech versus censorship” ranking. Pew Research Center’s 2025 surveys found that 21% of U.S. adults had used X compared with 3% who had used Truth Social; 12% regularly got news on X versus 2% on Truth Social. Among people who use each service, however, news use was similarly common: 57% of X users and 55% of Truth Social users said they regularly get news there.

The short answer
X is the practical default for most people posting or following news. Its U.S. reach is roughly seven times Truth Social’s by Pew’s 2025 adoption figures, and its network spans more countries, beats and political viewpoints. That scale creates more opportunities for a post to reach reporters, officials, specialists and eyewitnesses, while also producing a faster and noisier stream.

Truth Social is a specialist choice. The Associated Press describes its content and audience as overwhelmingly conservative and closely tied to Donald Trump’s political ecosystem. That concentration can make it efficient for reaching that community, but it is not a representative cross-section of the public. Trump Media & Technology Group does not disclose user numbers, so precise claims about Truth Social’s active-user total are not established.

For either platform, treat the feed as a lead-generation system rather than an authority. A post can be widely shared without being true, and a post that is hard to find may still be accurate.
Reach and audience: the numbers that matter
| Measure | X | Truth Social | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. adults who used the platform | 21% in Pew’s 2025 Social Media Fact Sheet survey (fielded Feb. 5–June 18, 2025) | 3% in the same survey | X offers a much larger potential domestic audience. |
| U.S. adults who regularly get news there | 12% in Pew’s Aug. 18–24, 2025 news survey | 2% in the same survey | More Americans encounter news on X in absolute terms. |
| News use among the platform’s own users | 57% regularly get news on X | 55% regularly get news on Truth Social | Both services are strongly news-oriented for people who already use them. |
| Exact active-user total | Not stated in the cited Pew results | Not disclosed by Trump Media & Technology Group, according to AP background reporting | Do not convert the percentages into an invented user count. |
The percentages measure different things. “Used” means an adult reported using the service; “regularly get news” measures habitual news consumption. They are not monthly-active-user counts, and they describe U.S. adults rather than a global audience. X’s larger base is therefore a reliable directional advantage for reach, not a promise that every post will be seen.
The gap also matters for network effects. A reporter looking for a source, a local resident posting from an incident, or an agency issuing a correction is more likely to find a ready audience on the service used by 21% of U.S. adults than on one used by 3%. That is a probability advantage, not a guarantee of accuracy or engagement.

It is not technically restricted to Trump supporters, but its political concentration is unusually strong. AP reporting characterizes the platform’s audience and content as overwhelmingly conservative and part of the MAGA base. In practice, a new account is more likely to encounter Trump-aligned politicians, activists, commentators and communities than the broad ideological mix found on X.
That concentration can be useful when your subject is conservative politics, Trump-related announcements or conversations already taking place inside that movement. It can be a disadvantage if you need neutral sampling, cross-party debate, international expertise or quick contact with a wide range of newsrooms.
Audience fit also affects how a post is interpreted. A factual update framed for one political community can be misunderstood or ignored elsewhere. If your work serves multiple audiences, publish the same verified facts with platform-appropriate context rather than assuming that one community’s shorthand will travel.

How X’s recommendation system works
X says its recommendations combine the accounts and Topics a person follows with likes, reposts, replies, watched media and what is popular in that user’s network. The company says those signals operate across more than 500 million daily posts. This design can surface a developing story before it reaches a conventional news homepage, especially when journalists, officials and eyewitnesses are posting from the scene.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The same network effect can amplify rumor. A post that attracts rapid engagement may be recommended because it is engaging, not because it has been checked. X’s recommendation policy says that freedom of speech does not guarantee that a post will be amplified by the service. In practical terms, visibility is partly a ranking decision, not a neutral measure of importance.

What Truth Social offers
Trump Media & Technology Group’s filing for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, lists a For You feed, a Discover tab, recommendations for other accounts, Groups and direct messaging. The company introduced direct messaging in 2022, Groups in May 2023 and international availability in June 2023.
These tools support following a defined political community and discussing posts within groups or private messages. They do not create the same breadth of sources as X’s larger network. Discovering a claim on Truth Social should therefore be followed by an independent search for the original document or reporting, not by assuming that repeated posts represent confirmation.
Why the feeds feel different
X’s wider network increases the chance that one event appears simultaneously through multiple roles: a witness, a reporter, a government agency, a subject-matter expert and critics of the initial account. Truth Social’s tighter political network can produce faster consensus inside its community but fewer independent viewpoints. Neither pattern is automatically more accurate; each changes how quickly you encounter disagreement and corroboration.
For a breaking event, follow several roles rather than one prominent account. Add the relevant public agency, a local reporter, a specialist who understands the subject and an outlet with a correction policy. On Truth Social, supplement movement-aligned accounts with the original agency or document so that the platform’s political concentration does not become your only information channel.
Posting, reposting, groups and messaging
| Task | X | Truth Social | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach a broad public audience | Large U.S. adoption and a broad international conversation | Smaller U.S. adoption with a concentrated conservative audience | X |
| Follow breaking events | Recommendations use follows, engagement, watched media and network popularity across more than 500 million daily posts | For You and Discover feeds plus account recommendations; the filing does not quantify the recommendation system’s scale | X for breadth; Truth Social for a focused political beat |
| Organize a community | Follow and Topic-based discovery; documented features here do not establish a group feature | Groups, introduced in May 2023 | Truth Social when the discussion is centered on its community |
| Private conversation | Direct-message capability is part of the service, but no additional message limits are established here | Direct messaging introduced in 2022 | Either; choose the service where your contacts already participate |
| International availability | Broad international participation is a core network advantage | International availability announced in June 2023 | X for cross-border reporting and discovery |
For a news post, the platform’s mechanics matter less than the quality of the source attached to it. Put the key fact and date in the first sentence, identify whether the information is confirmed or developing, and link or name the primary source when one exists. Separate what is known from your interpretation so a repost does not strip away the qualification.
A posting checklist for either service
- Lead with the verifiable fact. State what happened, where and when before adding commentary.
- Name the source. Identify the agency, filing, transcript, study or named witness instead of relying on a vague “reports say.”
- Mark the status. Use clear labels such as confirmed, alleged, developing or unverified.
- Preserve context. Include the relevant date, jurisdiction, time zone and a link that readers can open.
- Anticipate clipping. Write so the first sentence still cannot be mistaken for a stronger claim if it is quoted without the rest.
- Correct visibly. If a fact changes, update the post or publish a correction that explains what changed rather than silently deleting the record.
These steps are especially important when cross-posting. A phrase familiar to a Trump-centered audience may need explanation for a wider X audience, while an abbreviation common among journalists may need expansion on Truth Social. Keep the underlying evidence identical even when the framing and examples differ.
Moderation, amplification and the “less censored” question
Neither platform’s public description proves that it is inherently less censored or more truthful. They describe different moderation and visibility choices.
Truth Social’s stated approach
Trump Media & Technology Group says Truth Social prohibits illegal and other restricted content and uses human review together with third-party technology to support moderation while preserving open expression. That is a policy description, not an independent measurement of how consistently decisions are applied.

AP quoted Cornell doctoral student Roxana Muenster saying, “There is also a lot of hate speech and extremism on the platform due to their lax approach to content moderation.” The observation describes a reported consequence of the platform’s approach; it does not establish that every post or account is extremist.
X’s stated approach
X says harmful or offensive material may remain on the service but can be excluded from Home recommendations, top replies, For You recommendations and push notifications. It also says it can add context through Moments and prebunks during civic processes and crises. A post can therefore remain technically available while becoming harder to encounter through recommendation surfaces.
“Removed,” “downranked,” “not recommended” and “allowed” are different outcomes. When comparing moderation, ask which outcome you care about: whether a post can exist, whether followers can see it, whether strangers will be shown it, or whether the platform adds context. Political culture and factual reliability are separate questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat moderation means for a news publisher
A newsroom or independent reporter should distinguish distribution risk from editorial risk. On X, an allowed post may still receive little recommendation if it does not generate the signals the system favors. On Truth Social, a post may reach a highly interested political audience but circulate within a narrower interpretive frame. In both cases, keep an owned archive of source documents and corrections rather than treating the platform post as the permanent record.
Do not infer accuracy from the absence of a warning label, a large view count or a post remaining online. Conversely, a label, downranking decision or removal does not by itself prove that the underlying claim was false. Verify the claim independently and describe the platform action separately.
Which platform should you choose?
Choose X when you need scale or source diversity
- You are publishing for the largest possible U.S. audience.
- Your beat involves journalists, public agencies, companies, researchers or eyewitnesses across ideological and national boundaries.
- You need to discover breaking developments through many independent accounts.
- You want your post to participate in a conversation that extends beyond one political movement.
- You need to compare competing accounts quickly and find public responses from institutions in different countries.
Choose Truth Social when community fit is the priority
- Your intended readers are concentrated in Trump’s political network or the wider conservative movement.
- You want to participate in Groups and discussions built around that audience.
- You accept that the smaller network may provide less ideological and institutional diversity.
- You are prepared to verify claims outside the platform before presenting them as news.
- Your message depends on political references and vocabulary already familiar to that community.
Use both when the audiences are genuinely different
Cross-posting can make sense for a newsroom, campaign, researcher or commentator serving both communities. Do not treat identical wording as a complete strategy: explain acronyms, identify dates and preserve source links on each service. Monitor replies separately because a claim may attract different objections, corrections and context on each platform.
Set a clear purpose for each account before posting. One account can be the rapid alert channel; the other can be the community discussion channel. That division reduces the temptation to judge success only by raw likes or reposts, which are shaped by each platform’s recommendation system and audience size.

- Capture the exact claim. Copy the wording, image or video and note who posted it, when it appeared and what event it supposedly describes.
- Find the primary record. Look for the government release, court filing, company statement, research paper, transcript or on-record interview behind the claim. Check that the document’s date and jurisdiction match the post.
- Check independent reporting. Compare the primary record with a trusted news organization that is not simply repeating the same social post. A second account quoting the first is not independent confirmation.
- Separate fact from prediction. Label what has happened, what a source alleges and what someone expects to happen. Do not turn a forecast or opinion into a headline fact.
- Inspect media context. Check whether a photograph or video is old, cropped, edited or from another location. A vivid clip is evidence only of what it actually shows.
- Look for the strongest counterevidence. Search for official corrections, opposing filings, updated numbers or reporting that tests the original claim instead of merely repeating it.
- Delay amplification when the stakes are high. If the claim concerns public safety, elections, health, violence, markets or an individual’s reputation, wait for corroboration before reposting. If you cannot verify it, say that it remains unverified or do not share it.
The goal is not to avoid social platforms. It is to keep recommendation systems from becoming your fact-checking system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common pitfalls when comparing the services
- Confusing adoption with active users. Pew’s percentages are survey measures among U.S. adults, not audited monthly or daily totals.
- Assuming equal news intensity means equal reach. The 57% and 55% figures describe news use among each platform’s own users; X still reaches far more adults overall.
- Treating repetition as corroboration. Ten accounts copying one post are still one unverified source.
- Reading political concentration as neutrality. A tightly aligned audience may be useful for a beat but is not a balanced sample of public opinion.
- Equating visibility with endorsement. Recommendation, downranking, a warning label and removal are distinct platform actions.
- Using a platform policy as a fact check. A moderation decision describes distribution, not whether a claim is true.
- Ignoring dates. A statement from an earlier stage of a crisis can remain viral after circumstances have changed.
Answers to common questions
Is Truth Social better than X for news?
For broad news discovery, X is better because its audience and source network are much larger. Truth Social can be better for following Trump-centered and conservative political discussion, provided you verify consequential claims elsewhere.
Where should I post a news update?
Post on X when reach, international discovery and contact with varied sources matter most. Post on Truth Social when your readers are specifically concentrated in its conservative community. If both audiences matter, use both and retain the same sourcing standards.

Which platform has more users?
Pew’s 2025 U.S. survey found use among 21% of adults for X and 3% for Truth Social. Those are survey percentages, not disclosed active-user totals. AP reports that Trump Media & Technology Group does not disclose Truth Social’s user numbers.
Is Truth Social just for Trump supporters?
No. Anyone can use it, but AP describes its content and audience as overwhelmingly conservative and tied to the MAGA base. Expect a stronger Trump-centered political context than on X.
Which platform is less censored?
There is no single factual ranking from the policies cited here. Truth Social describes human and third-party moderation while emphasizing open expression. X says some harmful material can remain online but be excluded from recommendations, replies or notifications. Decide whether you mean removal, follower access, stranger discovery or added context.
How much news do users get on each platform?
Among people who use the services, Pew found that 57% of X users and 55% of Truth Social users regularly get news there. The near-parity shows that both are important news sources for their existing users, not that they have comparable total reach.

Best Value
Does a looser moderation policy make a platform more reliable?
No. A policy may leave more material visible or apply fewer restrictions, while recommendation systems can still amplify some posts and suppress others. Visibility, political culture and factual accuracy must be evaluated separately.
Why does X sometimes show a story before news sites do?
X combines follows, Topics, engagement, watched media and network popularity across more than 500 million daily posts. That can expose eyewitness or official posts early, but speed increases the need to confirm the source and date.
Does Truth Social have tools for communities?
Yes. TMTG’s filing lists Groups, introduced in May 2023, along with direct messaging, For You, Discover and account recommendations. Those tools help organize discussion, but they do not remove the need for outside verification.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose X for maximum reach, faster cross-network discovery and a wider mix of sources. Choose Truth Social for direct access to a concentrated Trump-centered conservative community. Whichever you use, treat every post as a lead—not proof—and verify consequential claims with primary records, trusted news organizations or official government sources.
