What happened aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073?
On September 30, 2026, Flydubai flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an altercation occurred in the flight deck. Flydubai said the crew secured the aircraft and diverted it for an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. KPBS, citing the airline’s statement, reported that the motive was unknown and remained subject to a formal investigation.
Contemporaneous passenger accounts described people aboard intervening to subdue the co-pilot. The Times of Israel reported that the flight carried around 180 passengers, nearly all Israeli; that is the outlet’s account, not a confirmed passenger manifest in the other reporting cited here.
Who did Trump thank, and what did he say?
Trump praised Yaniv Hayun, whom The Times of Israel describes as an Israeli plumber who helped subdue the co-pilot. In a video reported by the newspaper on October 3, Trump said, “I just want to thank and congratulate Yaniv Hayun,” followed by, “He’s a hero.” The report also quotes Trump saying, “What a job he did.”

That praise is a political characterization of Hayun’s actions, not an official reconstruction of how the emergency unfolded. The early accounts establish that passengers and crew intervened, but the cited reporting does not provide a final account of cockpit access or who controlled the aircraft at each moment.
What is known—and not known—about the descent?
Published figures differ and come from different kinds of accounts. KPBS reported Flightradar24 data showing a descent of more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. CNN’s September 30 transcript relayed a passenger’s recollection of about 14,000 feet in 37 seconds. Neither figure is presented in those reports as a final official flight-data finding.

Was a motive established?
No motive was established in the airline statement reported by KPBS: the airline said motives were unknown and subject to formal investigation. Reports raised the possibility of terrorist links, but that possibility should not be treated as a proven motive or finding.

The Times of Israel identifies Hayun as the passenger Trump praised. CNN separately interviewed a passenger it identified in its transcript as Assaf Rajwan, who also helped subdue the attacker. CNN quoted Rajwan describing the experience as “an existential moment, a to be or not to be moment.” These are separate accounts and should not be conflated; the cited coverage does not supply a complete official sequence of every passenger’s actions.
