Trump Tells South Korea to Sign on to Alaska LNG or “I’ll Just Charge Them More”

At a White House press availability on October 2, 2026, President Donald Trump said South Korea could face a higher charge if it did not sign on to the Alaska LNG project. But he did not identify the charge or its amount, and South Korea had not said it had committed to invest. Seoul’s reported position was that participation remained under review.

What Trump said about charging South Korea more

Trump defended his announcement of South Korean participation by saying, “I didn’t jump the gun. I mean, they were there and they were represented,” according to Yonhap News Agency’s account of the October 2 exchange.

He added, “And let’s see, if they don’t want to do it, that’s okay with me. I’ll just charge them more.” In a fuller account, Yonhap reported that Trump asked whether South Korea had not signed and said, “Tell them if they don’t sign shortly, I’m going to double it up.”

Neither report establishes what “charge” or “double it up” referred to. Trump did not specify a fee, an existing amount, or a policy measure in the reported remarks. A tariff increase is one possible interpretation, but the available reporting does not confirm that he meant tariffs or that any charge will rise. The quotations here are as Yonhap reported them; they have not been independently checked against a primary transcript or video transcript.

Has South Korea agreed to invest in Alaska LNG?

No finalized South Korean investment commitment is established by the cited reporting. Yonhap said the South Korean government regarded participation as undecided. A Seoul Economic Daily report dated October 4 described the governments’ understanding as an agreement to begin a review, conditional on the project being commercially reasonable and meeting relevant domestic legal requirements.

That is materially different from a completed bilateral investment agreement: Trump publicly described South Korean participation as part of the package, while Seoul’s reported position was that a review had begun but a decision to invest had not been made. Yonhap also reported that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick put the potential South Korean investment at more than $50 billion. Lutnick’s figure describes a potential investment, not money Seoul has committed.

What the Alaska LNG project involves

Yonhap describes a proposed 1,298-kilometer pipeline carrying natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope to southern Alaska, where the gas would be cooled into liquefied natural gas (LNG) for shipment to Asia. Reuters reported that the project had been planned for decades and still lacked binding commitments. It also reported an estimate that Alaska LNG would cost more than twice as much as a comparable U.S. Gulf Coast plant; that is Reuters’ reported comparison, not an independently verified cost calculation.

Those commercial considerations help explain why the reported review was conditional. The project’s scale and cost do not, by themselves, show that South Korea has decided to participate or that any deal has been finalized.

South Korea’s existing U.S. LNG purchases are separate

South Korea has previously agreed to buy U.S. LNG, but those purchases are not an equity or investment commitment to Alaska LNG. A White House fact sheet published October 29, 2025, said Korea Gas Corporation had signed agreements for about 3.3 million tons per year of U.S. LNG through long-term agreements with sellers and their portfolios or offtake agreements. Buying LNG and investing in the facilities that produce and transport it are different arrangements.
