Donald Trump suggested that the co-pilot suspected of attacking Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar might be linked to Iran, but described the claim as preliminary. AP reported that no confirmed Iranian connection had emerged as of its Friday coverage, and an official said there was then no evidence linking Iran to the attack.
What happened on Flydubai flight FZ1073?
Flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when its co-pilot assaulted Captain Smit Machchhar in the cockpit. AP reported that 182 people were aboard. The plane diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Saudi preliminary findings, reported by The National, said the co-pilot assaulted the captain and both pilots were injured. Flydubai said the on-duty crew secured the aircraft and diverted it safely. Machchhar later told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from hospital: “I was fighting for my life. At one point, I realized that if I didn’t get up … then passengers would lose their lives.”

In AP’s Friday reporting, no confirmed connection to Iran had emerged, and an official said there was no evidence linking Iran to the cockpit attack at that point. That describes the status reported then; it does not establish what investigators may conclude later.
What is reported about the suspected co-pilot?
In an October 3 report, AP said three people familiar with the situation, including Gulf and Western diplomats, identified the suspected co-pilot as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly. AP also reported that the UAE called the incident a “terrorist attack” and said the co-pilot used the cockpit crash axe.

What are investigators examining?
The UAE attorney general ordered a specialist investigation to determine whether the incident involved terrorist activity or purpose, prior planning, or direction. Saudi authorities carried out preliminary work with UAE security teams. AP reported that Saudi authorities were working with several countries, including Israel, to determine motive.
The accounts differ in what they establish:
| Information | What has been reported | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Possible Iran connection | Trump said he was hearing that Iran was involved but offered no explanation of the basis for his suspicion. | Unconfirmed; AP reported no confirmed connection and an official said there was then no evidence linking Iran to the attack. |
| Suspect’s identity and background | AP attributed the identification and reported prior flight restriction to anonymous sources. | Reported by sources who were not authorized to speak publicly, not presented as final investigative findings. |
| Purpose and planning | The UAE ordered an investigation into possible terrorist purpose, prior planning, or direction. | Under investigation; the reports do not establish a motive or whether the suspect acted alone. |
What remains unknown?
- Why the co-pilot attacked the captain.
- Whether the suspect acted alone or had help, direction, or support from another person, group, or state.
- Whether any Iranian connection exists.
Antonio Giustozzi, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, cautioned against filling gaps in evidence with political attribution: “When you have this kind of gray area where evidence is lacking, there’s a tendency, especially (by) politicians, the media, etc., to attribute everything to Iran.”
