President Donald Trump said on October 2, 2026, that the United States would not ban diesel exports. The announcement reversed the public direction of comments made over the preceding days, when he had supported or considered restricting shipments abroad. It came as G7 members announced a planned release of oil and fuel products, including substantial diesel supplies.
What Trump said—and what changed
Asked about stopping diesel shipments abroad, Trump told reporters at the White House on October 2: “We’re not going to be doing the export ban.” He also said the proposal had “never really” been on the table, while praising Europe’s planned fuel release.

How the G7 fuel release fits in
The G7 announced a planned release of 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products. A substantial amount of diesel was scheduled to be released first, with the rest of the supply measures staged over four months. Trump credited Europe’s contribution and said he had asked for it.
This is a separate measure from a US export restriction: the G7 plan draws on reserves, while an export ban would prevent some US-produced diesel from being shipped overseas. The planned release is not proof that all 100 million barrels—or all of its diesel—have already reached the market. Rice University Baker Institute energy research fellow Jim Krane warned of the trade-off: “Draining stocks will reduce retail fuel prices for a while, at the cost of leaving Europe with less emergency cover.”

Why an export ban was considered
Diesel prices were exceptionally high. AP, citing AAA, reported a US national average of $6.37 per gallon on October 2, 2026, down from a record $6.52 on September 22, 2026. Supporters of restricting exports argued that keeping more US-refined diesel at home could help domestic buyers.

S&P Global reported that US diesel exports reached a record 1.6 million barrels per day in August 2026, with most shipments going to Latin America and Europe. A restriction therefore could affect international supply as well as domestic availability.

What the trade-offs could have been
The potential effects were contested and would not necessarily be the same in every region. Analysts described possible short-term benefits for some US buyers, alongside risks to refinery output, gasoline production and overseas supply.

S&P Global summarized a CERA analysis of a hypothetical complete ban from October through December 2026. The model estimated that refiners would need to absorb or eliminate forecast exports of 1.48 million barrels per day and projected possible reductions in refinery runs and gasoline production. These are conditional estimates for a scenario, not actual effects of a ban; the United States did not impose one in Trump’s October 2 statement.

Could the G7 release lower US diesel prices?
Michael Lynch of the Energy Policy Research Foundation estimated, as quoted by AP, that European diesel releases could lower US prices by 25 to 50 cents per gallon after a few weeks. That is his estimate of a possible effect, not a guaranteed reduction or a confirmed outcome. The G7 announcement described a staged plan, so the timing and market impact would depend on how the supplies entered circulation.
