President Donald Trump said on October 2, 2026, that he felt “badly” for the seven men accused in an alleged sexual assault at Cornell, arguing that New York Attorney General Letitia James would not give them “a fair shake.” His remarks followed Governor Kathy Hochul’s appointment of James’s office to investigate the case. The appointment authorizes an investigation; it does not establish guilt or mean charges have been filed.
What Trump said about the Cornell investigation
During a press gaggle on October 2, Trump called James corrupt and said he could not imagine the accused receiving fair treatment from her. “I feel badly for whoever she’s looking at because they won’t get a fair shake,” he said, according to The Daily Beast’s account. Mediaite also reported the exchange.

The Daily Beast reported that Trump also questioned Hochul’s appointment in a Truth Social post and referred to James as “Letitia ‘Peekaboo’ James.” The article reports that critics have characterized the nickname as racist and that Trump has denied that characterization. The label is disputed; it should not be treated as an uncontested description.

Why Hochul appointed James’s office
On October 1, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order appointing the state attorney general’s office as special prosecutor in the investigation of an alleged sexual assault at Cornell in October 2024. The Associated Press reported the appointment and case timeline. James said her office would work “guided by the facts and the law.”

Under the appointment, James’s office is authorized to investigate and, if warranted, present evidence to a grand jury. That procedural authority is not itself a criminal charge, a finding of guilt, or a decision that the allegations are true. In its official statement about the appointment, James said, “Every New Yorker deserves to know that when they report a crime, it will be investigated fully and fairly.”

- October 1, 2026: Hochul assigned the investigation to the New York Attorney General’s Office as special prosecutor.
- October 2, 2026: Trump criticized the appointment and argued the accused would not receive a fair shake.
The seven men described in coverage as the “Cornell 7” are accused former fraternity members. The cited reporting does not establish their guilt or report a charging decision by James’s office. Trump’s criticism of James is his stated view about the investigator; it does not resolve the underlying allegations or the investigation’s outcome.
