If an Areca ARC-1883ix-16 sees one NetApp DS4246 shelf but not the second, check the SAS cable and lane wiring, shelf-to-shelf links in both SAS domains, shelf IDs, and controller mode—in that order. The ARC-1883ix-16 has one external SFF-8644 port, so do not assume its family’s dual-path capability means this specific card provides two independent external host connections. NetApp and Areca documentation explain the interfaces and topology, but do not establish a guaranteed cross-vendor cable part number or coding matrix.
What this setup needs to do
A DS4246 uses IOM6 SAS modules and has two SAS domains. For a two-shelf stack, the shelves must be linked through both domains for the standard dual-domain layout; having both shelves powered does not prove that either SAS path is connected or that the host can discover the disks.

The ARC-1883 Series specification lists four internal SFF-8643 connectors and one external SFF-8644 connector for the ARC-1883ix-16. The family supports SAS/SATA devices and Single Disk or JBOD operation. That establishes the card’s connector and operating capabilities, but it does not by itself certify a particular NetApp shelf, IOM, firmware, operating-system driver, or cable combination.
Check the cable before changing the topology
The host-side connector on the ARC-1883ix-16 is SFF-8644. The other end must match the DS4246 IOM port, and the cable must carry SAS lanes with the correct wiring. A connector that fits mechanically is not proof that its lane mapping or any vendor coding is compatible.

NetApp’s DS4246 installation and service guide describes SAS copper and optical cables as replaceable for shelf-to-shelf and controller-to-shelf connections. However, the NetApp and Areca documents do not name a guaranteed ARC-1883ix-16-to-IOM6 cable SKU or publish a cross-vendor coding matrix. Before buying a cable, confirm its exact ends, lane wiring, and any required coding with its manufacturer or a specialist reseller.
Wire both SAS domains between the shelves
For the standard two-shelf chain, NetApp’s current cabling rules use one shelf-to-shelf connection in domain A and one in domain B. For the logical first shelf and the next shelf, the standard links use IOM port 3 to port 1 in each domain:

| Path | First shelf | Next shelf |
|---|---|---|
| SAS domain A | IOM A, port 3 | IOM A, port 1 |
| SAS domain B | IOM B, port 3 | IOM B, port 1 |
Use the shelf’s IOM labels to identify A and B; do not infer port identity from cable position alone. A quad-path design adds another pair of links through ports 4 and 2, following NetApp’s rules for that topology. Do not improvise those extra links or treat them as a substitute for establishing both standard domains.
There is a model-specific constraint at the host end: the ARC-1883ix-16 lists only one external SFF-8644 connector. Areca describes failover between dual SAS paths when a JBOD has dual expanders, but that general capability is not evidence that this card can attach two separate external host cables. Verify the intended topology against the card’s documentation and the exact JBOD connection design. NetApp’s shelf-to-shelf cabling rules describe the stack; they do not certify that every third-party HBA can provide a supported multipath host connection to it.

Work through the likely causes
- Record the hardware. Photograph the rear of both DS4246 shelves and identify each IOM. Confirm whether both use IOM6 rather than assuming visually similar modules are identical. Record the ARC-1883ix-16 firmware and the host operating system and driver.
- Confirm the Areca operating mode. Check the Areca management utility and make sure the card is configured to expose individual JBOD disks, rather than placing them behind an unintended array configuration. Preserve existing disk metadata before changing controller settings.
- Verify cable compatibility. Confirm the ARC-side SFF-8644 connector, the IOM-side connector, SAS lane wiring, and any vendor coding. If compatibility is uncertain, ask the cable supplier to confirm the exact card and IOM combination.
- Check the shelf links and path distribution. Verify the domain-A and domain-B connections between shelves against the table above. If the design is intended to be quad-path, check the additional pair against NetApp’s layout. Avoid connecting both host paths to one shelf when the chosen supported design calls for balanced paths.
- Check identity, power, and link state. Make sure the shelves have unique shelf IDs, both IOMs show link or activity, and both power supplies are healthy. NetApp’s installation material calls for checking duplicate shelf IDs and running Config Advisor after cabling. Follow the prescribed power-up sequence for the installation rather than repeatedly cycling shelves at random.
- Check the supported component combination. Confirm that the IOM generation, disk type, adapter firmware, and host driver work together. NetApp identifies IOM6 with DS4246 and warns that mixing IOM3 and IOM6 can impose a 3 Gb/s limit. Bring shelf and drive firmware to the appropriate current level before adding components, following the applicable compatibility guidance.
- Rescan and inspect the host view. Rescan the SAS bus, then use the Areca utility to inspect discovered enclosures, expanders, paths, and individual disks. On ONTAP systems, use NetApp’s documented shelf and disk commands and run Config Advisor. Correct a missing path or duplicate shelf ID before rebuilding arrays or making other destructive changes.
Isolate the fault one change at a time
If the second shelf remains absent, reduce the topology and add one variable per test:
- Test one shelf using one known-good path and cable; note the detected enclosure and disk count.
- Add the second domain path and check whether the path count changes.
- Add the second shelf using the prescribed shelf-to-shelf links and check whether its enclosure and disks appear.
- If discovery changes unexpectedly, swap one cable or IOM at a time and record whether the missing shelf, path, or disk count changes.
This sequence helps separate an external cable fault from a shelf-link, IOM, shelf-ID, firmware, or controller-mode problem. Do not change several cables and controller settings at once: if visibility changes, you will not know which change mattered.

When multipath and support status matter
For supported NetApp configurations, multipath is a reliability requirement, not just a way to make more disks visible. NetApp documents a critical condition when a shelf is detected without multipath. Areca’s dual-path guidance describes automatic switching to the other path if one expander or data path fails, provided the JBOD and connection design have dual SAS paths. Neither statement substitutes for confirming that the exact Areca-card, shelf, cable, firmware, and host combination is supported.

If the current topology has only one usable path, do not assume a cable can be replaced without interrupting access; establish the supported path configuration first.
