TROPIC® is a brand, not the name of a material or a generic strap design. “Tropic-style” usually describes other straps that copy its perforated basket-weave appearance. The genuine strap is described by its maker as an Italian-made, vulcanized natural-rubber strap. Before buying, check the watch’s lug width, the buckle taper and the strap’s length; a similar-looking weave alone does not make a strap authentic.
What does “Tropic” mean on a watch strap?
TROPIC® is the brand name. The name is also commonly used informally to describe straps with a similar perforated, basket-weave surface, but those look-alikes are not necessarily made by TROPIC®.

The brand dates the original strap to 1955 and describes it as a waterproof rubber strap intended for dive watches. Its account says the perforations were designed to let air move and water escape around the wrist. That explains the design intent; it is not independent evidence that the strap performs better than another rubber or silicone strap.

Synchron says it acquired the TROPIC® brand, assets, blueprints, tooling and remaining old stock in 2003. The brand homepage separately says Synchron has owned the registered trademark since 2010. Those are the brand’s stated acquisition and trademark-ownership dates, respectively.

What is the genuine TROPIC® strap made of?
The maker describes its current strap as made in Italy from a proprietary vulcanized natural-rubber compound. It says the compound is silicone-free and PFAS-free. These are manufacturer statements, not independent material testing.
The distinctive surface is a perforated basket weave, paired with a tapered shape and an embossed name on the inside. The brand also makes claims about qualities such as hypoallergenic properties, tensile strength, UV resistance and temperature resilience; those claims should be treated as the maker’s, not as independently verified test results. The brand does not provide a named performance statistic that establishes a comparative advantage over silicone, FKM or other rubber compounds.

How to tell a genuine TROPIC® strap from a look-alike
- Check the inside: the brand says each genuine strap has the TROPIC® name embossed on its inner side.
- Do not rely on the weave alone: other straps can imitate the perforated basket-weave look.
- Read the listing carefully: confirm that it identifies the product as an Original TROPIC® strap, rather than only using “Tropic-style” to describe its design.
- Verify the material and dimensions: a similar appearance does not establish that another strap uses the same compound or has the same fit.
How to choose the right size
Measure the distance between the watch’s lugs where the strap attaches. The genuine strap is listed in 20mm and 22mm lug-width versions; the correct width is the one that matches the watch’s lug spacing.

Choose the genuine strap if the TROPIC® identity and the maker’s stated material are important to you.
