TRISHNA is a planned CNES–ISRO Earth-observation satellite that will measure land and coastal surface temperature with thermal-infrared instruments, alongside visible and shortwave-infrared observations. The spacecraft is still under development, so its launch, data products and applications described here are prospective rather than results already delivered from orbit.

What is the TRISHNA satellite mission?

TRISHNA stands for Thermal infraRed Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural resource Assessment. It is a joint mission of France’s CNES and India’s ISRO. The satellite is designed to observe how the land and water surface heat and cool, using thermal-infrared measurements supported by visible and shortwave-infrared imaging.

That combination matters because surface temperature is a practical indicator of how ecosystems exchange energy and water. A warmer-than-expected crop, wetland or urban surface can signal a different moisture condition from a cooler one. Visible and shortwave-infrared observations add information about vegetation and other surface properties needed to interpret the temperature measurements.

TRISHNA is not a consumer satellite or a device that individuals will operate directly. Its purpose is to produce calibrated Earth-observation data for scientists, public agencies, water managers, agricultural researchers and other users studying land, coasts and environmental change.

When will TRISHNA launch?

CNES’s current English TRISHNA project page lists 2027 as the planned launch year and describes the mission as still in development. That is the schedule readers should use today, but it is not a guaranteed launch date.

Earlier CNES material and ISRO documents referred to 2026. Those older dates show that the schedule has changed or that different pages were updated at different times; they do not establish a firm alternative date. A launch year can move as spacecraft integration, testing, launch-vehicle availability and ground-system readiness progress.

What development milestones have been reported?

ISRO’s 2024–25 annual report records two system-interface performance and validation reviews, as well as an international TRISHNA science workshop held in November 2024. ISRO’s 2025–26 annual report says the preliminary design review was completed for bus elements and the VNIR/SWIR payloads. These are meaningful engineering milestones, but they indicate continuing development rather than a confirmed launch.

What orbit and coverage are planned?

CNES specifies a 761-kilometre sun-synchronous orbit. The planned local descending-node crossing time is 12:30 p.m., which sets a consistent daylight observation geometry for the descending pass.

The nominal revisit is three days at the equator. CNES’s detailed description adds an important qualification: the same point viewed at the same angle is revisited every eight days, while the instrument’s wide field of view can provide observations at different viewing angles more frequently. At temperate latitudes, orbital geometry can also create more frequent observation opportunities than the equatorial figure alone suggests.

Readers should therefore distinguish between a three-day equatorial revisit statistic, an eight-day repeat at the same viewing angle, and the practical number of usable observations for a particular location after cloud cover, viewing geometry and processing rules are considered.

How detailed will TRISHNA imagery be?

The camera’s planned spatial resolution changes across the swath: CNES gives 57 metres at nadir and up to 90 metres at the swath edge. Mission products are specified at 60 metres. Nadir is the point directly beneath the spacecraft; pixels toward the edge of the viewing strip are larger because of the oblique look angle.

These are planned instrument and product specifications, not measured on-orbit performance. A 60-metre product does not mean every observation will have identical ground sampling or equal quality across the scene. Users will need the eventual product documentation for geolocation accuracy, cloud screening, uncertainty fields and processing levels.

What instruments and measurements will TRISHNA carry?

The mission has two principal instruments, one supplied by each partner. The payload arrangement described by CNES and ISRO is:

Instrument or capability Lead agency Planned role
Thermal-infrared instrument CNES Measure emitted thermal radiation to derive land and water surface-temperature information.
Visible and shortwave-infrared (VNIR/SWIR) instrument ISRO Provide complementary spectral observations for vegetation, surface characterization and biophysical products.

ISRO’s 2024 TRISHNA workshop flyer specifies four thermal-infrared bands and seven visible/shortwave-infrared bands. The flyer also describes thermal acquisitions around both noon and midnight while covering the globe. Observing at substantially different times of day is intended to capture changing surface-temperature conditions rather than only a single daytime snapshot.

What data will TRISHNA produce?

The instruments will record radiance and reflected energy; the ground segment will process those measurements into physical quantities and higher-level products. The planned data description includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Surface-temperature records for land and water surfaces.
  • Biophysical variables derived with the thermal and VNIR/SWIR observations.
  • Inputs for surface-energy-balance modelling.
  • Derived heat-flux estimates.
  • Evapotranspiration estimates, which describe water transferred from soil and vegetation to the atmosphere.

Surface temperature is not the same as air temperature reported by a weather station. It describes the thermal state of the observed surface, which can respond quickly to soil moisture, vegetation condition, shading, wind and recent weather. Interpreting it correctly requires atmospheric correction, cloud screening, emissivity information and other processing that will be documented with the released products.

Why are noon and midnight observations useful?

Daytime heating reveals how strongly a surface responds to incoming solar energy. Night-time measurements show how quickly it cools and can expose contrasts between wet and dry ground, vegetation and built surfaces. The paired timing can improve studies of surface-energy exchange and help distinguish a temporary heating effect from a persistent moisture or land-cover condition.

What could TRISHNA data be used for?

Water stress and evapotranspiration

CNES links land-surface temperature with plant water stress and evapotranspiration. In principle, a crop or natural ecosystem that is short of water may show a different temperature and evaporation pattern from a well-watered area. Repeated observations could help researchers examine where stress develops and how it changes, while evapotranspiration estimates could support water accounting.

These are planned applications, not a promise that the satellite will automatically tell a farmer when to irrigate. Local decisions still require weather, soil, crop, management and field observations, plus an understanding of the uncertainty in each processed product.

Agriculture and water-resource management

At 60-metre product resolution, TRISHNA is intended to resolve patterns finer than many coarse regional temperature datasets. Potential uses include comparing irrigation zones, studying crop water use, monitoring reservoirs and supporting research into drought response. Water agencies could combine the data with river flows, groundwater records and weather observations rather than relying on temperature alone.

Lakes, rivers, estuaries and coastal waters

CNES identifies hydrology of coastal strips and land surfaces as an application area. Time series of water-surface temperature can help investigate mixing in lakes, rivers, estuaries and ocean-adjacent zones. Thermal gradients may reveal where water masses meet or where circulation changes, although clouds, surface conditions and the satellite’s viewing geometry affect what can be observed.

Urban ecosystems and heat studies

Buildings, roads, vegetation and exposed soil heat and cool at different rates. Repeated thermal observations could support studies of urban heat patterns, vegetation stress and the performance of cooling or greening measures. TRISHNA’s data would complement, not replace, street-level sensors and detailed city planning information.

Cryosphere, solid Earth and atmosphere

CNES also lists the cryosphere, solid Earth and atmosphere among the mission’s domains. Thermal observations can contribute to research on snow and ice conditions, surface processes and exchanges between the ground and atmosphere. The exact products and uncertainties for each domain will depend on the final processing chain and validation results.

How will people access TRISHNA data?

CNES says the two mission centres will distribute data with free access. The announced distribution services are France’s GEODES and India’s BHOONIDHI. CNES also names the French thematic portals THEIA for land-surface data and ODATIS for ocean data.

Because the spacecraft has not launched, readers should treat this as the announced access policy rather than a currently operating catalogue. After launch, users will need to check each portal for registration requirements, product names, file formats, spatial and temporal coverage, processing levels, quality flags and documentation. Free access does not by itself specify whether every product will be available immediately, globally or at the same processing level.

What will the ground segment do?

The ground segment will receive instrument measurements, convert them into physical quantities, generate products and distribute them. CNES and ISRO mission centres are also responsible for product-quality monitoring and long-term preservation. That work is essential for turning raw observations into datasets that can be compared across dates and used in scientific or operational models.

Jean-Louis Raynaud, identified by CNES as “Responsable Segment Sol Mission TRISHNA au CNES” (TRISHNA Mission Ground Segment Manager at CNES), described the challenge this way: « Développer un tel segment sol dans le contexte de coopération franco-indienne est un vrai défi, tant sur le plan de la coopération que de la technologie. » An English rendering is: “Developing such a ground segment in the context of Franco-Indian cooperation is a real challenge, both in terms of cooperation and technology.” The English wording is a translation, not the original French sentence.

What are the main mission specifications?

Specification Planned figure or description Qualification
Orbit 761 km, sun-synchronous CNES mission specification; not an in-flight measurement.
Descending-node crossing 12:30 p.m. local time Planned local observation time.
Revisit 3 days at the equator Same point at the same viewing angle is described as every 8 days; wider viewing geometry can provide other opportunities.
Camera resolution 57 m at nadir to 90 m at swath edge Planned variation across the camera field of view.
Standard product resolution 60 m Planned product specification, distinct from camera sampling.
Payload bands 4 thermal-infrared and 7 VNIR/SWIR bands ISRO workshop flyer, 2024.
Nominal mission lifetime 5 years Planned operating lifetime.
Spacecraft mass Approximately 1 tonne CNES engineering specification.
Onboard data memory 1.4 Tbits CNES platform specification.
X-band downlink 920 Mbps CNES communications specification, not an end-user download speed.

How should prospective users prepare?

  1. Wait for an official data-release notice. The mission is not yet delivering orbital observations, so any current TRISHNA-labelled dataset should be checked carefully for whether it is simulated, airborne, campaign or unrelated data.
  2. Choose the right portal. Start with GEODES or BHOONIDHI when operational access is announced; use THEIA for land-focused French products and ODATIS for ocean-related products where applicable.
  3. Read the product guide before analysing pixels. Confirm whether a file contains brightness temperature, land-surface temperature, an evapotranspiration estimate or another derived variable. Check units, scale factors, quality flags and uncertainty layers.
  4. Filter observations by quality. Cloud, haze, viewing angle, missing data and retrieval confidence can affect a time series. Do not treat every pixel as equally reliable.
  5. Combine satellite data with local evidence. Weather stations, field measurements, hydrological records and land-cover maps are needed to interpret temperature changes and validate applications.

Is TRISHNA being compared with other satellites?

TRISHNA is still a planned mission, so there is no sound basis for ranking its realised performance against operating satellites. Comparisons should use clearly defined axes such as spatial resolution, revisit interval, thermal versus optical coverage, geographic extent and data licensing.

ISRO’s 2024 workshop flyer names NASA/ASI’s Surface Biology and Geology mission and ESA/EC’s Land Surface Temperature Monitoring mission as complementary missions in preparation. “Complementary” does not mean interchangeable, and the flyer does not establish a current product-performance ranking among them.

What is not known yet?

  • There are no TRISHNA on-orbit observations or post-launch performance statistics because the satellite has not launched.
  • The 2027 launch year remains a plan and can change.
  • Final product names, formats, processing levels, uncertainty information and operational release dates have not been established in the announced material.
  • No measured societal or environmental impact can be attributed to TRISHNA yet; current claims concern intended applications.

For now, TRISHNA should be understood as an advanced, jointly developed thermal-imaging mission whose value will depend on successful launch, calibration, validation and sustained free data distribution. The scientific and operational benefits will become assessable only after those stages produce real observations.
