Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha urged Tripura University to build stronger industry ties, expand interdisciplinary research and foster innovation, entrepreneurship and academic partnerships. He made the appeal at the university’s 40th foundation-day programme on 2 October 2026. The proposal is an ambition, not evidence that the university has already achieved regional research-hub status.
What Manik Saha said about Tripura University
At the foundation-day programme, Saha called for closer collaboration between industry and academia, interdisciplinary research, entrepreneurship, innovation, and national and international academic partnerships, according to Hindustan Times. The report framed his remarks as a call for the university to emerge as a leading higher-education and research centre in the Northeast.

Saha also said: “A university must not create only knowledge; it must also connect the knowledge with the needs of society.” The statement places practical relevance and social needs alongside the creation of knowledge.

He linked growth in the state’s higher-education sector to degree colleges established since 2018; the report did not give a count or an independent measure of that growth.

What a research-hub ambition would involve
The university’s official research and development page describes work across sciences, social sciences, humanities, management, education and allied fields. It lists research and development, specialised centres and facilities, collaborations, funded projects, publications, patents, consultancy, start-ups and capacity building as parts of its research ecosystem.
Those are the university’s own descriptions of its scope and activities, not independently evaluated measures of regional leadership. The sources available for this announcement do not provide comparable figures for research funding or output, nor benchmarks against other Northeast institutions. Saha’s call should therefore be read as a goal rather than a ranking or verified status.

Which institutions reportedly signed MoUs?
Hindustan Times reported that Tripura University signed memorandums of understanding with five academic institutions at the event. Its accessible report names four:
- Assam University
- Devi Ahilya Viswavidyalaya
- Pahle India Foundation
- Bandhan Trust
The story does not identify the fifth signatory. The university pages reviewed confirm the foundation-day date but do not independently verify the agreements or list their signatories, so the reported MoUs and the four names remain attributable to the news report.

Tripura University’s background
Tripura University describes itself as a Central University in Northeast India. Its official site says it began in 1976 as the postgraduate wing of Calcutta University, became a state university in 1987 and attained Central University status in 2007. Hindustan Times gives 2 October 1987 as the establishment date and also reports the 2007 change in status.
The university’s official site lists its 40th foundation-day celebration on 2 October 2026. Saha’s call for a stronger research role comes against this institutional background, but the event and the university’s stated research remit do not by themselves establish that it is already a regional hub.
