Tripo has added OpenAI’s GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst to Tripo Studio, combining text and image generation, precision editing, multi-view reference creation and image-to-3D conversion in one browser workspace. The integration is aimed at creators who need a controllable reference image before reconstructing it as a 3D asset.
What the integration adds
Sunburst is available inside Tripo Studio’s Generate Image workflow. A creator can begin with a text prompt, upload an image, or use both together, then refine the result before sending it to Tripo’s Image to 3D Model tool. That removes the usual hand-off between a separate image generator and a 3D reconstruction service.

Tripo’s task-oriented templates are designed around common reconstruction preparations rather than an empty prompt box:
- Character Extraction isolates a character from a source image.
- Head Extraction focuses on a head or portrait reference.
- T Pose prepares a character for modeling and rigging.
- Character Completion fills in missing visual information.
- Variants creates alternative designs while retaining the original concept.
- 3D Enhance improves a reference intended for reconstruction.
- 3D Print-Ready targets preparation for physical output.
- Photo to Figure converts a photographic subject into a figure-style reference.
- Asset Extraction isolates a usable object or prop.
How Tripo’s image-to-3D workflow works
1. Create or import a reference
Open Generate Image in Tripo Studio and enter a description, upload an existing image, or combine the two. Starting without an image is also possible through Tripo’s Text to 3D Model workflow: Tripo first creates a reference image, which can then be edited with the same Sunburst-powered controls.

- 500mm/s and 20000 mm/s² Acceleration True High Speed: Don't wait around for your masterpieces. Lightning-fast printing speed lets you focus on creating, not waiting.
- Enclosed Design: Fully enclosed body improves print performance for advanced filaments. Automatic Bed Leveling: Say hello to high-quality, successful prints. Auto bed leveling makes 3D printing such an easy thing.
- Set Up in 15 Minutes: Spend more time printing and less time setting up. User-friendly design ensures a hassle-free assembly experience for all skill levels.
- Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.
2. Prepare the image for reconstruction
Choose the template that matches the downstream task. For example, T Pose can make a character easier to reconstruct and rig, while Asset Extraction can remove unrelated objects from a product or prop image. Iterate on anatomy, silhouette, materials, lighting or background before conversion. Sunburst is intended for edits where untouched portions of the image should remain stable.
3. Generate additional views
Use Tripo’s multi-view generation to create complementary angles. Multiple consistent views give an image-to-3D system more information about the sides and rear of a subject than a single front-facing picture.

Tripo’s September 2026 developer changelog lists the models as chat_image_2.5_sunburst and chat_image_2.5_flare for text-to-image and image-to-image endpoints. The practical distinction is straightforward: Flare is the speed-oriented choice, while Sunburst prioritizes fidelity during edits.

| Consideration | Sunburst | Flare |
|---|---|---|
| Primary emphasis | Preserving untouched image areas and precise edits | Noticeably faster generation |
| Documented cost | Same documented base cost as Flare; higher quality tiers use more credits | Same documented base cost as Sunburst |
| Best fit | References where identity, silhouette, materials or details must stay consistent | Rapid ideation and iterations where turnaround matters most |
| Image-to-3D implication | Better suited to a final reconstruction reference when edits must not disturb existing details | Useful for exploring alternatives before selecting a final reference |
The choice is not a universal quality ranking. If a creator is testing many concepts, Flare’s lower latency can be more productive. If a nearly finished reference needs localized changes, Sunburst’s preservation behavior is the more relevant advantage.
What GPT-Image-2.5 contributes
In its 2026 Images 2.5 announcement, OpenAI describes sharper detail, more natural lighting, richer textures, stronger preservation of reference subjects, more reliable instruction following across multiple edits and more precise editing than the preceding generation. OpenAI reports up to 50% lower image-generation latency versus Images 2.0. Those performance figures are vendor-reported, not independent benchmarks.

Tripo API quality and transparency settings
Developers calling Tripo’s image endpoints should account for several implementation details in the September 2026 changelog:
- The 2.5 models accept quality values through
max. - Background settings can be
auto,opaqueortransparent. - When
transparentis requested,output_format=pngis required. - If quality is omitted, Tripo treats it as
low. - That default differs from OpenAI’s handling, where
autois not an unsupported default in the same way. - Higher quality tiers consume additional Tripo credits.
A transparent-background request therefore needs both settings together: selecting transparency alone without PNG output will not satisfy Tripo’s documented constraint. Applications should also make the quality choice explicit instead of relying on the low-quality omission default.
When Sunburst is the better choice for 3D references
- Use Sunburst when the subject’s identity, proportions, markings or materials must survive several edits.
- Use Sunburst for a final reference that will be reconstructed, especially after cleanup or background removal.
- Use Flare when speed is more valuable than maximum edit preservation during early concept exploration.
- Generate multiple views before conversion when the subject has important side, rear or underside details.
- Inspect the converted mesh and plan for segmentation, retopology, texturing, rigging or animation rather than assuming the first reconstruction is production-ready.
What this means for creators
The significant change is workflow continuity: Tripo now lets a creator move from an idea, to a controlled image, to multiple views and then to a 3D asset without exporting between separate applications. Sunburst supplies the fidelity-focused image stage; Tripo supplies the reconstruction and downstream asset operations. The result is most useful when image preparation is treated as part of modeling, not as a disposable preliminary step.
