Triangle Capella 2 vs. Triangle Borea BR03: Which Speakers Should You Buy?

Choose the Triangle Capella 2 if you want a complete active wireless system with amplification, a hub, TV inputs and room-calibration tools. Choose the passive Triangle Borea BR03 if you already have (or deliberately want to choose) an amplifier and prefer a separates-based system. They are not two versions of the same speaker: the Capella 2 is an active stereo pair, while the Borea BR03 named here is a passive bookshelf pair. Comparing only their speaker prices therefore gives a misleading answer.

The recommendation below follows each product’s documented design and connectivity, not a controlled listening test. Current prices, software support and regional availability can change, so verify the exact model and market before ordering.

They are different system architectures

Capella 2: an active stereo system

Each Capella 2 speaker is part of an active system. The pair is sold with Triangle’s Stereo Hub 2, so the buyer is not starting with bare cabinets and a separate power amplifier. Triangle describes the system as combining Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with WiSA wireless speaker communication, automatic calibration and TV compatibility. The documented amplifier figure is 2 x 100 W.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The hub is the connection point for physical sources. A review by T3 dated October 10, 2026 describes HDMI eARC, Ethernet, optical, coaxial, USB, an analogue input and a subwoofer pre-out. It also describes app-based placement tuning and room calibration using an iOS device; Android support was described as forthcoming in that review. Treat app behavior and supported services as date- and software-dependent rather than permanent specifications.

Borea BR03: a passive bookshelf pair

The Borea BR03 product page identified in the title is the passive bookshelf model. A passive speaker does not amplify a line-level source by itself. You connect the pair to the speaker outputs of an external amplifier, and that amplifier connects to your television, streamer, turntable preamp, computer or other source.

This arrangement gives you control over the electronics. You can use an amplifier you already own, select a network amplifier with the features you need, or change the amplifier later without replacing the speakers. It also means the BR03’s purchase price is only one part of the system budget. If you do not already own suitable amplification, add that cost before deciding that the BR03 is the inexpensive option.

Why the product names cause mistakes

Triangle’s 2025 catalogue also lists BR03 Connect, an active product. The catalogue attributes 2 x 60 W RMS, Bluetooth, several wired inputs and a subwoofer output to that active variant. Those specifications do not belong to the passive BR03.

Listings may also use “BR03 BT” or “BR03 Connect.” Do not assume those labels are interchangeable with the passive model in this comparison. Confirm whether the box contains an amplifier, what inputs it has, and whether the seller is describing the exact passive Borea BR03 before comparing prices or features.

Price: compare complete systems, not just cabinets

Product and source Published price snapshot What the figure includes How to interpret it
Capella 2, Triangle US page $2,900 per pair, accessed in 2026 Active speaker pair and Stereo Hub 2 according to the product description US manufacturer price; verify the current listing and regional taxes
Capella 2, Triangle UK page £2,299 Complete active system UK manufacturer price; not a currency-converted promise for another market
Capella 2, T3 review £2,299 UK, $2,899 US and AU$6,000 Australia, reported October 10, 2026 Review-period price snapshot Useful dated context, not a universal current price
Passive Borea BR03, Triangle European page 449 € per pair, accessed in 2026 Passive speakers only European manufacturer price; no current US price was established for this exact passive model

It is valid to say that Triangle listed the Capella 2 at $2,900 per pair on its US page and the passive Borea BR03 at 449 € per pair on its European page when checked. It is not valid to subtract one number from the other and call the result a US or European price gap. The currencies, markets and included electronics differ. Before purchase, check the price in your country for the exact model, then add an amplifier, source components, cables and any stands required by your chosen setup.

T3 reports that dedicated S05 stands for the Capella 2 cost extra. They are an optional accessory rather than an included requirement in the documented package. The passive BR03 likewise needs suitable placement and support, but no particular stand price is established here.

Connectivity and everyday use

Use case Capella 2 Passive Borea BR03
Streaming over a home network Wi-Fi is listed; the hub and associated software provide the network side Requires a network-capable amplifier or separate streamer
Phone or tablet playback Bluetooth is listed, alongside network playback options Requires Bluetooth in the amplifier or an external Bluetooth source
Television Triangle lists TV compatibility; T3 describes HDMI eARC on the hub Requires an amplifier with an appropriate TV input, such as HDMI ARC/eARC or optical
Physical digital sources Hub inputs described by T3 include optical, coaxial and USB Depends entirely on the amplifier or source components
Analogue source T3 describes an analogue input on the hub Requires an amplifier with the needed analogue input or a separate preamp
Subwoofer T3 describes a subwoofer pre-out Depends on the amplifier’s output and bass-management features
Wireless speaker link WiSA is listed by Triangle Not applicable to a passive speaker pair by itself

Capella 2 is the simpler path when one system must handle a television, network music and occasional Bluetooth playback without a separate rack of components. The BR03 can provide the same sources only when the amplifier and other components you select provide them. That modularity is an advantage for an owner who values choice, but it adds decisions and possible points of failure.

Streaming-service compatibility can change with firmware, app versions and country. Check Triangle’s current compatibility information for the Capella 2 and the specifications of any amplifier you consider for the BR03 rather than treating a dated list of services as permanent.

Do you need an amplifier for the Borea BR03?

Yes. The passive Borea BR03 requires an external power amplifier. A phone, television headphone output or basic line-level streamer cannot drive it directly. You need an amplifier with left and right speaker outputs and a power range that is appropriate for the speaker’s published specifications.

The exact amplifier model is a system choice, not a single mandated match. Consider these requirements before buying:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Source inputs: HDMI eARC or optical for a television, network streaming for music, Bluetooth for casual playback, or phono input if you use a turntable with a compatible cartridge and do not already have a phono preamp.
  • Speaker connection: two-channel speaker outputs and the correct cable termination for your installation.
  • Placement and load: follow the amplifier and speaker manufacturers’ impedance and ventilation guidance; do not assume a small desktop amplifier is suitable simply because it is inexpensive.
  • Bass expansion: if you plan to add a subwoofer, check whether the amplifier provides a subwoofer output or usable bass management.
  • Control: decide whether you want a physical remote, an app, or both.

No particular amplifier has been tested as a definitive partner for the BR03 in the available evidence, so a recommendation of one brand or wattage would overstate what is known. If you already have an amplifier, check its output specifications and inputs first; that existing equipment can change the value calculation substantially.

Room setup and calibration

Setting up Capella 2

  1. Place the two speakers on stable surfaces or compatible stands, with the left and right channels separated and aimed toward the listening position.
  2. Connect the Stereo Hub 2 to power and to the television or source equipment you intend to use. For a compatible television, use the hub’s HDMI eARC connection as described by the current manual.
  3. Join the hub to your home network if you want Wi-Fi streaming or app features. Ethernet is an alternative where a wired network connection is preferable.
  4. Pair Bluetooth devices only when you need direct short-range playback; use the network route for the services and features supported by the current software.
  5. Run the automatic calibration or placement adjustment in the companion app from the listening position. T3’s October 2026 review described iOS-device room calibration and said Android support was forthcoming at that time, so check the current app requirements.
  6. Recheck the selected input and speaker channel assignment after calibration. If you add a subwoofer, configure its level and crossover using the hub’s current controls rather than assuming the factory setting is ideal.

Calibration is a convenience and a way to adapt placement; it is not proof that the Capella 2 will sound better than every passive system. Room dimensions, listening distance and furniture still matter.

Setting up the passive BR03

  1. Choose the amplifier and source components before unpacking the speakers, so you know which inputs and outputs the finished system will have.
  2. Place the speakers symmetrically around the listening position, leaving the clearance recommended in the current BR03 instructions for the rear and side walls.
  3. Connect the amplifier’s left output to the left speaker and right output to the right speaker. Turn the amplifier off while making connections.
  4. Connect the television, streamer, computer or other source to the amplifier, selecting digital or analogue connections according to the equipment.
  5. Start at a moderate volume, verify left/right orientation and listen for distortion or protection shutdown before increasing the level.
  6. If you use a subwoofer, configure it through the amplifier’s documented output or bass-management controls. A passive speaker pair does not create a subwoofer crossover by itself.

The BR03 setup takes longer because you assemble the signal chain yourself, but each component can be replaced independently. That is the central trade-off rather than a defect.

What the documented listening evidence does—and does not—show

T3’s review characterizes the Capella 2 as spacious, organized and broadly neutral, while noting limits in scale and low-frequency substance. Those are the reviewer’s listening impressions under that review’s conditions, not universal measurements and not the result of a controlled comparison with the passive BR03.

The available material does not establish a reliable sound-quality winner between the two systems. The Capella 2’s active electronics, calibration and room interaction can produce a different result from a BR03 driven by an amplifier chosen by the owner, but the outcome depends on the room, source chain, placement and listening preferences. Do not use the 2 x 100 W Capella figure as a direct prediction of louder or better sound than the BR03; active-system power ratings and passive-amplifier ratings are specified in different contexts.

Which buyer should choose which system?

Choose Capella 2 when integration is the priority

  • You want a pair that includes amplification and a connection hub.
  • Wi-Fi streaming, Bluetooth and TV connectivity need to work without assembling separate source boxes.
  • HDMI eARC, multiple hub inputs and a subwoofer pre-out match your planned sources.
  • You value app-based placement adjustment and automatic calibration.
  • The complete-system price is acceptable in your region, including any stands or other accessories you want.

This is a recommendation from the documented feature set. It does not claim that every room will produce the same sonic result.

Choose the passive Borea BR03 when flexibility is the priority

  • You already own a suitable amplifier and source equipment.
  • You want to choose network streaming, TV connectivity, phono capability or Bluetooth separately.
  • You expect to upgrade the amplifier or add components over time.
  • You prefer the lower listed European speaker price and have budgeted separately for electronics where needed.
  • You want a conventional passive-speaker system rather than a software-dependent hub.

The BR03 is not the cheaper complete system by definition. It is the lower-priced speaker entry in the documented European listing, and the final total depends on the amplifier and sources you add.

Pause when a listing says BR03 BT or BR03 Connect

Ask the seller to identify the exact model number and included electronics. If it is BR03 Connect, its active 2 x 60 W RMS design and inputs belong to that variant, not the passive Borea BR03. A BT label may also indicate a different configuration. Compare only after confirming whether amplification, Bluetooth, wired inputs and subwoofer output are included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Confirm the model: verify “Capella 2” or “Borea BR03 passive,” not a similarly named Connect or BT product.
  2. Set the market: record the price in your own country and currency. Do not convert the $2,900 US and 449 € European snapshots into a claimed universal difference.
  3. Count the complete system: for Capella 2, include any stands and accessories; for BR03, include the amplifier, streamer, TV interface, cables and any subwoofer integration hardware.
  4. List your sources: television, network services, Bluetooth devices, USB, optical, coaxial, analogue or turntable. Match each requirement to a documented input.
  5. Check software: confirm current app, operating-system and streaming-service support, especially if you use Android or a service not listed in the current documentation.
  6. Plan the room: measure speaker spacing, listening distance, power access and network access before choosing between a hub-based active system and separate components.
  7. Verify return and service terms: electronics and software features can vary by region, so retain the exact product description and firmware information for your market.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Comparing a complete Capella system with bare BR03 speakers

Symptom: the BR03 appears dramatically cheaper, but the finished system requires several more boxes. Fix: write down the amplifier and source equipment you already own, then price only the missing components before deciding.

Buying the wrong BR03 variant

Symptom: a listing advertises Bluetooth, 2 x 60 W RMS or a built-in subwoofer output. Fix: those are catalogue details associated with BR03 Connect; confirm that the listing is not substituting an active model for the passive Borea BR03.

Assuming app features are permanent

Symptom: a review mentions a feature that is absent from your app or region. Fix: check the current manufacturer documentation, firmware version and operating-system support. T3’s dated review specifically described Android calibration support as forthcoming at that time.

Expecting wattage to settle the choice

Symptom: the Capella’s 2 x 100 W number is treated as proof of superior sound or the BR03 is rejected because its passive specification was not found. Fix: use wattage only alongside room size, listening level, amplifier compatibility and placement. It is not a controlled sound-quality comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the wrong television connection

Symptom: the television produces no audio or volume control is unreliable. Fix: select the hub’s HDMI eARC input where supported, enable the television’s HDMI-CEC/eARC settings as required, or use the amplifier’s documented optical/HDMI path for a BR03 system. Confirm the television’s output format if the connected equipment cannot decode it.

Verdict

For a buyer who wants one coordinated product with amplification, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, TV connectivity and room-adjustment tools, the Triangle Capella 2 is the more appropriate system. For a buyer who already has an amplifier or wants to build and upgrade a separates system, the passive Triangle Borea BR03 is the more flexible starting point. Neither conclusion is a universal sound-quality ranking: the products solve different ownership problems, and the right choice is the one whose complete system matches your electronics, room and budget.
