The Chargers list Herbert first and Trey Lance second on their depth chart, and Lance is questionable with a groin injury. That is a within-team recommendation, not proof Herbert is a better start than every quarterback on your roster.
Who should I start: Trey Lance or Justin Herbert?
Start Herbert over Lance if you need a Chargers quarterback and Herbert is available. The Chargers’ official depth chart lists Herbert as QB1 and Lance behind him. Lance’s questionable designation and limited participation in practices add uncertainty; he is not the supported alternative for a standard one-quarterback decision.

The Chargers’ injury report lists Lance as questionable with a groin injury after limited participation Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The NFL’s Week 4 injury report also lists him as questionable. These are pregame reports, not confirmation of final availability or inactives.

What to check before kickoff
The Chargers are scheduled to play at the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 4:25 p.m. ET, according to the NFL Week 4 schedule. Check the final team or NFL availability report before locking in a quarterback, particularly if Herbert’s status changes. A depth chart shows listed order; it does not establish that a backup is healthy or will take over in a particular situation.

Does Herbert belong in your lineup over every quarterback?
No. The Chargers’ depth chart settles the comparison between their quarterbacks, not the one between Herbert and every option on your fantasy roster. Compare Herbert with your available alternatives using your league’s scoring rules and current matchup information. The official sources cited here do not provide a comparative fantasy projection, matchup ranking, or numerical forecast that proves he should start over a non-Charger.
How to interpret Lance’s role
The Chargers’ July 7, 2026 training-camp quarterback preview named Herbert, Lance, and DJ Uiagalelei in the quarterback room and described Lance as having held a firm grasp on the backup role the previous season. That is background rather than the best guide to the current order: the team’s current depth chart lists Herbert first and Lance second.
