Trent and Avenue Supermarts are retailers built for different shopping missions. Trent is primarily a fashion and lifestyle company, with formats such as Westside and Zudio. Avenue Supermarts runs DMart, a value-focused chain for recurring household purchases, including food, non-food FMCG, general merchandise and apparel. Their store counts, supply chains, pricing language and reported financial scale therefore cannot be compared as though they were equivalent retail formats.
The essential difference in one view
Trent Limited and Avenue Supermarts Limited both operate large Indian store networks, but they create value in different ways. Trent assembles and presents fashion and lifestyle propositions. Its stores are intended to express a point of view about clothing, beauty, footwear, home products and related categories. Avenue Supermarts uses the DMart format to bring a broad basket of everyday necessities together at consistently competitive prices.

| Typical shopping mission | Updating a wardrobe, buying fashion or beauty products, and browsing lifestyle merchandise. | Completing a regular household shop across groceries, packaged goods and selected non-food categories. |
| Customer proposition | Westside combines on-trend fashion with an aspirational brand experience; Zudio offers exclusive in-house fashion at value prices. | Everyday value in a modern large-store environment, guided by an everyday-low-cost/everyday-low-price (EDLC/EDLP) approach. |
| Reported footprint at 31 March 2026 | 1,286 stores in 321 cities: 300 Westside, 963 Zudio and 23 stores in other lifestyle concepts. | 500 stores and approximately 20.58 million square feet of retail business area, across the states and territories listed in its annual report. |
The headline contrast is category and business design, not simply “large retailer versus large retailer.” A Zudio visit and a DMart visit can both involve value-conscious customers, yet the products, purchase frequency and reasons for visiting are different.

Trent: fashion and lifestyle propositions
Trent’s best-known formats are Westside and Zudio. They are not interchangeable banners with different price tags; each is designed around a separate customer proposition.
- Westside: a more aspirational, trend-led fashion and lifestyle experience. The assortment includes apparel and adjacent categories such as beauty, footwear and home-related products. Trent’s annual report says the model focuses on “on-trend fashion, aspirational brand experience and convenient access across store and digital channels.”
- Zudio: value-oriented fashion built around exclusive branded offerings curated in-house. Trent describes Zudio as focusing entirely on exclusive branded merchandise aligned with current fashion trends and offered at what it calls “irresistible prices.”
- Other concepts: Trent’s portfolio also includes additional lifestyle formats, so its company-level numbers cover more than Westside and Zudio alone.
Fashion demand is inherently more discretionary and seasonal than grocery demand. A customer may visit Westside or Zudio when replacing clothing, responding to a trend, preparing for an occasion or browsing for a new look. The basket can be small or large, and the same shopper may not return on a fixed weekly schedule.

Avenue Supermarts: the DMart everyday basket
Avenue Supermarts’ core retail business is DMart. Its stated assortment spans three broad areas:
- Foods: groceries and other products used in routine household shopping.
- Non-food FMCG: frequently purchased consumer goods outside food.
- General merchandise and apparel: durable or occasional-use products, including clothing, alongside the core household basket.
DMart is therefore not only a grocery store, but food and household replenishment are central to its reason for being. A shopper can visit for a planned weekly or monthly shop and add non-food items in the same trip. This creates a different traffic pattern from a fashion-led store, where the visit is more often tied to wardrobe or lifestyle discovery.

Trent actively owns the fashion proposition
Trent describes active ownership across design, branding, sourcing, logistics, pricing, display, promotion and selling. That list matters because it indicates control over the complete customer-facing proposition rather than a model based mainly on reselling a changing set of third-party labels.
For Westside, the objective is a coherent brand experience: the merchandise, store presentation, visual communication and digital access are intended to work together. Customers are buying into a curated style environment as well as individual products.
Zudio takes that ownership further through exclusive branded merchandise curated in-house. Its value proposition is not simply “discounted external brands.” The format uses its own product and brand architecture to coordinate trend selection, pricing and presentation. That can give Trent more control over how a collection is developed and displayed, while also making the store’s offer distinct from a conventional multi-brand department store.
DMart emphasizes assortment, availability and value
DMart’s architecture is organized around a broad, practical assortment and the ability to price that assortment competitively. Avenue Supermarts attributes its offer to local-market knowledge, product assortment and supply-chain efficiencies. The goal is a dependable shopping destination where customers can combine many routine purchases in one trip.
This does not mean every item has the lowest price in every market or on every day. EDLC/EDLP is a strategic principle: control costs through the operating system and pass value through relatively consistent pricing, rather than relying on a fashion-style cycle of frequent markdowns or short-lived promotions. The assortment can include apparel and general merchandise, but those categories support the larger everyday-shopping mission.

How the price propositions work
Westside: value within an aspirational fashion experience
Westside’s price proposition is inseparable from its positioning. The format seeks to make current fashion and lifestyle products accessible while preserving an aspirational environment. A shopper may evaluate design, fit, fabric, styling and the overall store experience, not only the ticket price.
Fashion pricing also reflects seasonality and collection changes. Newness, visual presentation and coordinated ranges can be as important as absolute low price. The relevant question for a Westside shopper is often whether the product delivers the desired look and experience at an acceptable price.
Zudio: exclusive fashion at value prices
Zudio is Trent’s sharper value-fashion proposition. Because the merchandise is exclusive and curated in-house, the format can align product choices, branding and price points around rapid, accessible fashion. Its promise is closer to “current style at a lower entry price” than to a supermarket’s promise of low operating cost across a household basket.

Zudio’s value should therefore be assessed within apparel: how much trend, variety and perceived freshness a customer receives for the price. It is not a substitute for DMart’s full grocery and household assortment.
DMart: EDLC/EDLP across a broad basket
Avenue Supermarts states that DMart offers good-quality products at great value under the Everyday Low Cost/Everyday Low Price principle. The operating logic starts with controlling the cost base, then using that efficiency to support prices across food, FMCG and general merchandise.
For a DMart customer, the value proposition is cumulative. Saving on a basket of staples, packaged goods and household products can matter more than obtaining a single fashion item at a promotional price. That encourages repeat visits and larger planned shops.
How the operating models differ
Trent’s integrated fashion operating system
Fashion retail requires decisions about trends, range planning, design, production timing, presentation and markdown risk. Trent’s stated involvement across the chain is intended to keep those decisions connected. Its FY2025-26 report says more than 80% of merchandise was near-shored from within India.

Near-shoring can shorten physical and commercial distance between product decisions and supply, although the figure does not by itself reveal lead times, product-level margins or the share of every category sourced in the same way. The important distinction is that Trent treats sourcing, design and brand presentation as parts of one retail proposition.
Store and digital access are also part of the Westside description. That points to a customer journey in which discovery can begin online, continue in a store or work in the opposite direction. Zudio’s value-fashion model similarly depends on getting a high volume of curated styles into stores at prices customers can understand quickly.
DMart’s cost and distribution system
Avenue Supermarts links its value proposition to local-market knowledge, assortment decisions and supply-chain efficiencies. At 31 March 2026, its annual report stated that the company operated 84 distribution centres and 12 packing centres.
Those facilities support the replenishment needs of a large everyday basket. Distribution and packing capacity can help move products into stores in a controlled way, but the published figures do not establish the cost per case, inventory turns or productivity of an individual centre. They show the infrastructure supporting the DMart network, not a direct measure of superiority over Trent’s system.
DMart’s operating model also depends on selecting the right assortment for each local market. A value retailer must balance national scale with differences in regional demand, pack sizes and shopping habits. The result is a store designed for practical navigation and repeat purchasing rather than a single seasonal fashion statement.
Store networks: why the headline counts are not directly comparable
| Metric | Trent, FY2025-26 | Avenue Supermarts, FY2025-26 |
|---|---|---|
| Total reported stores at 31 March 2026 | 1,286 across 321 cities. | 500 DMart stores. |
| Format detail | 300 Westside, 963 Zudio and 23 stores across other lifestyle concepts. | The reported retail business is the DMart network. |
| Retail area | Not stated as a single comparable figure in the cited Trent disclosure. | Approximately 20.58 million square feet of retail business area. |
| Geographic disclosure | 321 cities. | 17 states and territories are listed in the annual report. |
Trent has more locations because the count combines several fashion formats, especially the large Zudio network, with different store sizes and missions. Avenue Supermarts reports fewer stores but a substantial aggregate retail area concentrated in the DMart format. One store is therefore not an equivalent unit across the two companies.
Store count alone cannot establish which company has higher sales per store, better margins, stronger customer loyalty or better real-estate economics. A meaningful unit comparison would require matched information on area, trading days, product mix, sales, rent, inventory and format-level profitability. The cited disclosures do not provide that matched comparison.

What the FY2025-26 financial figures do—and do not—show
| Standalone measure for the year ended 31 March 2026 | Trent Limited | Avenue Supermarts Limited |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | ₹19,701.41 crore | ₹66,968.03 crore |
| Profit after tax | ₹1,967.82 crore | ₹3,223.93 crore |
These are standalone company-level figures for FY2025-26, not like-for-like results for Westside, Zudio and DMart. Trent’s totals combine a portfolio of fashion and lifestyle businesses. Avenue Supermarts’ totals primarily reflect the DMart retail business and its associated operating structure. The figures show that Avenue Supermarts reported the larger standalone revenue base, while Trent reported the larger store count; they do not show that one format earns more per store or has a superior margin.

The Avenue Supermarts audited standalone results filing was approved on 2 May 2026. Both sets of figures are tied to the fiscal year ending 31 March 2026. Store openings, closures, seasonal sales and later quarterly updates can change the picture after that date, so the period label should remain attached whenever these numbers are quoted.
How a shopper experiences the difference
If the mission is a wardrobe or lifestyle update
Trent’s formats are the more natural fit. Westside is designed for browsing coordinated fashion and lifestyle ranges in an aspirational setting. Zudio is aimed at shoppers who want current-looking apparel at a value price, with the selection built around exclusive in-house brands.
The shopping decision is likely to revolve around style, fit, colour, newness, quality perception and the total look. The visit may be occasional, seasonal or triggered by a specific event.
If the mission is a household stock-up
DMart is designed for that use case. Its food, non-food FMCG and general-merchandise assortment allows a shopper to consolidate recurring purchases. Apparel is available, but it sits inside a broader value basket rather than defining the store’s identity.
The decision is more likely to involve pack size, brand choice, availability, total basket cost and convenience. Repeat frequency can be higher because the products are consumed or replenished regularly.
If price is the primary concern
The answer depends on what is being bought. Zudio addresses value in fashion. DMart addresses value across everyday household categories. Westside adds an aspirational experience to its fashion proposition, so its value cannot be judged solely by comparing a single garment with a lower-priced alternative elsewhere.
Best Value
Why Trent has more stores while Avenue Supermarts reports more revenue
The apparent mismatch follows from format economics and category mix. Trent’s 1,286-store figure includes 963 Zudio locations, 300 Westside stores and 23 other lifestyle stores. Many fashion stores can be smaller and can be rolled out across more cities than a large supermarket designed to carry a broad household assortment.
DMart’s 500 stores serve a high-volume basket and together represent about 20.58 million square feet of retail business area. Grocery and FMCG purchases generate repeat demand, while a fashion store can have a different sales rhythm and seasonal profile. As a result, a company with fewer, larger stores can report greater total revenue than a company with more locations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat explanation is descriptive, not a productivity calculation. Without comparable format-level sales, area, costs and margins, it would be misleading to turn the two headline numbers into a per-store ranking.
What the comparison cannot establish
- It does not establish which company has higher format-level margins.
- It does not establish sales per store, sales per square foot or inventory productivity for Westside, Zudio or DMart.
- It does not establish market share, customer demographics or customer loyalty.
- It does not establish that either company is the better investment.
- It does not make a Zudio store and a DMart store equivalent operating units.
The company disclosures provide a reliable description of the propositions, reported footprints and standalone results for the specified fiscal year. They are not a substitute for a matched format-level operating dataset.
Bottom line: two different definitions of retail value
Trent sells curated fashion and lifestyle experiences through a portfolio led by Westside and Zudio. Its distinctive capabilities are design and brand ownership, trend selection, integrated sourcing and presentation, and the ability to offer separate aspirational and value-fashion propositions.
Avenue Supermarts sells a broad everyday basket through DMart. Its distinctive capabilities are assortment selection, local-market execution, distribution infrastructure and an EDLC/EDLP system intended to keep routine shopping competitively priced.
Choose the comparison lens carefully: fashion versus household replenishment, aspirational and exclusive brands versus broad value assortment, and multi-format store count versus a concentrated large-store network. Once those differences are recognized, the reported FY2025-26 scale figures become useful context rather than a misleading league table.
