U.S. Treasury bonds generally offer greater liquidity and much lower credit risk than corporate bonds, but neither advantage guarantees a stable sale price or a cost-free trade. Corporate bonds add the issuing company’s credit risk and can be harder or more expensive to trade; in return, they may offer higher yields that reflect both credit and liquidity risk. The right comparison is between the individual bonds and the trade you intend to make—not between two broad categories as if every bond behaved alike.

What the comparison means

A bond is a debt security: its issuer borrows money and promises payments under specified terms. A U.S. Treasury bond is issued by the U.S. government. A corporate bond is issued by a company. Both can provide scheduled interest and repayment of principal, but the source of those payments, the ease of trading, and the risks behind the promised payments differ.

“Liquidity” means more than whether a bond can technically be sold. It is the ability to buy or sell when you want at a fair price. “Trading cost” also means more than a stated brokerage commission: the difference between the price at which you can buy and the price at which you can sell, and the dealer’s execution price, can affect your result. A bond that is easy to sell may still have a price below what you paid, especially if interest rates or the issuer’s credit outlook have changed.

At a glance: Treasuries and corporate bonds

Factor U.S. Treasury bonds and other marketable Treasuries Corporate bonds
Issuer and payment backing Issued by the U.S. government. TreasuryDirect says interest and principal payments are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. TreasuryDirect Issued by a company. Payment depends on the issuer’s capacity and willingness to pay; the company’s credit quality can change.
Credit risk Very low U.S. government credit risk for direct Treasury securities. This does not protect the market value if you sell before maturity. Includes issuer credit risk, which varies by company and bond.
Liquidity Treasury securities tend to have high liquidity, but liquidity is not identical for every security or trade. Varies more widely by issue. Issue size, credit quality, age, maturity, complexity, trading activity, and available counterparties can matter.
Yield Reflects factors including the coupon, price, maturity, and prevailing market yields. May be higher than a Treasury’s yield, reflecting credit risk and potentially compensation for lower liquidity as well as other bond-specific factors.
Price risk before maturity Market price can rise or fall as yields change; a sale before maturity is at the available market price. Market price can respond to interest-rate changes and changes in perceived issuer credit quality, as well as liquidity.
Costs to trade Depend on the security, quote, trade size, execution route, market conditions, and any applicable brokerage charge. Depend on those factors too, and can be especially sensitive to issue-specific liquidity and trade size.

The SEC’s fixed-income market survey reviews studies in which corporate bond trading costs varied with trade size, issue size, credit quality, bond age, maturity, and complexity. These are tendencies, not guarantees about the next quote for a particular security. SEC Fixed Income Market Structure Advisory Committee survey

Liquidity: why Treasuries tend to be easier to trade

Treasuries tend to trade in a deep market with many participants. FINRA describes U.S. Treasury securities as tending to have high liquidity, while emphasizing that liquidity varies from one bond to another. A heavily traded Treasury may therefore be easier to buy or sell near a fair market price than a less frequently traded corporate issue. That category-level tendency is not a promise about every Treasury, every time, or every order size.

FINRA identifies low trading volume, wide bid-ask spreads, and fewer participants at available prices as signs that a bond may be harder or more costly to trade. A narrow spread is useful information, but it is not the whole picture: the quantity available at each price and the number of potential counterparties also matter. In stressed markets, demand can shift toward the most liquid securities, making less-liquid investments harder to trade. FINRA, “Understanding Disclosure Documents,” published August 27, 2026

Corporate bonds are not one uniform market. The same issuer can have multiple bonds with different maturities, issue sizes, trading histories, and terms. A large, recently issued bond from a stronger-credit issuer may trade more readily than a small, older or more complex issue. The SEC survey describes research associating lower estimated trading costs with larger issues, higher credit quality, more recently issued bonds, bonds closer to maturity, and simpler bonds without embedded options. Dealers’ inventory, the effort of finding a counterparty, and bargaining can also affect a corporate bond trade.

On-the-run and off-the-run Treasuries

Liquidity can vary within the Treasury market as well. An on-the-run Treasury—the most recently issued security at a given maturity—is not interchangeable in trading activity with an older, off-the-run security of similar maturity. The SEC survey reports an estimated interdealer bid-ask spread of about 1 basis point on BrokerTec for the Treasury secondary market during 2017. That figure describes a particular institutional market segment and year; it is not a current quote, a retail customer’s expected spread, or a figure that applies to every Treasury.

Risk: payment reliability is not price stability

Credit risk

Credit risk is the possibility that an issuer will not make promised interest or principal payments as scheduled. TreasuryDirect says U.S. Treasury interest and principal payments are guaranteed on time by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. That backing distinguishes direct Treasury securities from corporate bonds, whose payments depend on the issuing company’s ability and willingness to pay. It does not mean a Treasury’s market price is guaranteed to stay at par or to match the price you paid if you sell before it matures. TreasuryDirect, “FAQs about Treasury Marketable Securities”

Interest-rate risk

Both kinds of bonds can lose market value when market yields rise. An existing fixed-rate bond with a lower coupon may become less attractive than a newly issued bond paying a higher rate, so its price may fall. If yields fall, the existing bond’s price may rise. TreasuryDirect explains that Treasury bond and note prices depend on the yield to maturity and coupon interest rate: a price below par corresponds to a yield above the coupon rate, while a price above par corresponds to a yield below the coupon rate. The effect of a yield change depends in part on a bond’s remaining term and coupon. Longer duration generally means greater price sensitivity to yield changes. Do not assume that two bonds with similar maturity dates have identical interest-rate sensitivity: their coupons and other characteristics matter too.

Issuer and liquidity risk in corporate bonds

A corporate bond’s market price can change when investors reassess the issuer’s credit quality, even if broad interest rates are unchanged. A deterioration in the company’s outlook can raise the yield investors demand and lower the bond’s price. An issue that is difficult to trade may also require a larger concession to attract a buyer.

A corporate bond’s yield above a comparable Treasury yield is often called a yield spread. It should not be read as a pure estimate of default risk. The SEC survey summarizes research finding that illiquidity helps explain variation in corporate bond yield spreads. Credit risk and liquidity compensation can both contribute, along with other differences between the bonds being compared. A higher yield is not free extra return: it may reflect risks and trading frictions an investor is accepting.

Trading costs: what the published estimates do—and do not—show

The available published estimates below have different methods, time periods, and market scopes. They illustrate why corporate bond costs can vary; they are not current retail price quotes or a like-for-like comparison of what a household investor would pay today.

Estimate What it measured How to interpret it
About 1 basis point Estimated interdealer bid-ask spread on BrokerTec for the Treasury secondary market during 2017, as reported by the SEC survey. A historical institutional-market estimate for a highly liquid segment—not a current retail spread or a guaranteed execution price.
0.84% Estimated average corporate bond round-trip trading cost for 2014–2016, based on TRACE data and reported in the SEC survey’s discussion of Bessembinder et al. (2018). A historical study estimate, not an investor-specific commission or current quote.
1.25% Estimated average corporate bond round-trip trading cost for trades below $100,000 during 2014–2016, in the same study summary. Historical estimate; trade-size category and period matter.
0.58% Estimated average corporate bond round-trip trading cost for trades from $100,000 to $1 million during 2014–2016, in the same study summary. Historical estimate; it should not be applied automatically to a different bond or order.
0.40% Estimated average corporate bond round-trip trading cost for trades from $1 million to $10 million during 2014–2016, in the same study summary. Historical estimate; not a household investor’s expected cost.
0.32% Estimated average corporate bond round-trip trading cost for block trades above $10 million during 2014–2016, in the same study summary. Historical estimate for a very large trade category, not a retail benchmark.

These numbers should not be compared as if they measured the same thing. The Treasury figure is an interdealer bid-ask spread for one platform and year; the corporate figures are estimated customer round-trip execution costs over a multiyear period. The SEC survey presents historical research, not current market observations. No current retail-level, head-to-head transaction-cost statistic is established by these figures. How to think about the cost of your own trade

For an actual order, check the current quote for the exact bond and order size. Compare the dealer’s buy and sell prices where available, ask whether a commission or other charge applies, and consider the difference between the quoted price and the price at which the order is filled. The spread is a real economic cost even if no separate commission appears on a statement. A quote for a small order may not be available for a much larger one, and a quote can change as market conditions change.

For example, if a bond is quoted at one price to buy and a lower price to sell, the gap is part of the cost of moving between those sides of the market. That example describes the mechanics only; it does not imply a particular spread or execution cost for Treasuries or corporate bonds. A round-trip estimate includes costs associated with buying and later selling, so it should not be treated as the cost of one transaction.

How to compare two specific bonds

Before choosing between a Treasury and a corporate bond, compare the securities on the same terms and decide whether you expect to hold to maturity or may need to sell sooner. Use the actual quote and trade size rather than a market-wide average.

  1. Identify the payment source. For a direct Treasury, confirm the type of security and its payment terms. For a corporate bond, identify the issuer and assess its credit quality and ability to make payments; do not treat a higher yield as proof that the added risk is worthwhile.
  2. Match maturity and rate exposure. Compare remaining term, coupon, and duration rather than relying only on the maturity date. A longer duration generally brings greater sensitivity to yield changes.
  3. Check liquidity evidence. Look at trading activity, the bid-ask spread, available quote sizes and participants, issue size, and—among Treasuries—whether the security is on-the-run or off-the-run. For corporates, note the issue’s age, credit quality, proximity to maturity, and whether it has embedded options or other complexity.
  4. Use the intended order size. Request or inspect a quote for the quantity you expect to buy or sell. A market average or a quote for another size may not describe the price available for your trade.
  5. Calculate the full execution cost. Include the bid-ask difference, any brokerage charge, and other applicable transaction costs. For bonds with accrued interest, account for it in the purchase amount and understand when it is paid back.
  6. Decide how much execution certainty matters. A market order prioritizes execution but does not set a minimum acceptable sale price. FINRA notes that a limit order can help avoid accepting an unwanted price in a less-liquid market; it may not fill if no counterparty accepts that price. A limit order does not create liquidity.

Buying and selling Treasuries through TreasuryDirect

TreasuryDirect offers marketable Treasury securities through auctions and the secondary market. It accepts noncompetitive bids only; banks, brokers, and dealers can handle both competitive and noncompetitive bids. TreasuryDirect lists a $100 minimum purchase for marketable securities. If you buy a new marketable security there, it generally must be held for 45 calendar days before it can be transferred or sold. The exception is a purchase funded by reinvestment proceeds. If you use a broker instead, check that firm’s current access, order handling, and charges. TreasuryDirect, “Buying a Treasury Marketable Security”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For notes, bonds, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), and floating-rate notes, accrued interest can be part of the purchase price when applicable; TreasuryDirect says that accrued interest is returned with the first regular interest payment. Treasury bills do not pay periodic interest. These payment details matter when comparing cash required at purchase and scheduled income.

Treasury auction activity gives context for the scale of issuance, not a direct measure of how cheaply an investor can trade an individual bond. The Treasury Department reported 444 public auctions and about $29.7 trillion in Treasury marketable securities issued in 2025. Those figures describe issuance during that year, not secondary-market liquidity or a transaction-cost estimate. TreasuryDirect, “About Auctions”

Which bond type may fit your priorities?

  • Prioritizing lower credit risk and generally high liquidity: Direct U.S. Treasuries are the more natural starting point. Their market price can still fall before maturity, and liquidity differs across securities and trading conditions.
  • Considering a higher yield: A corporate bond may offer a higher yield than a Treasury, but that spread can include compensation for issuer credit risk and illiquidity. Compare the specific issuer, terms, market price, and likely execution cost rather than treating the yield difference as extra return without trade-offs.
  • Expecting to sell before maturity: Focus especially on current quotes, available trading interest, spread, and order size. A bond’s payment promise does not determine what another investor will pay for it today.
  • Planning to hold to maturity: Credit risk and the issuer’s ability to pay remain relevant; liquidity may matter less if you do not expect to sell, but circumstances can change. Interest-rate movements can still affect the value you could receive if you need to exit early.

The practical decision is not “Treasury or corporate?” in the abstract. It is whether the expected payments, credit exposure, sensitivity to rates, liquidity, and execution price of a particular bond suit your time horizon and the possibility that you may need to sell.
