A high-yield savings account is usually the better home for emergency cash or money whose withdrawal date could change. A Treasury bill can be a better fit when you know when the money will be needed, can hold the bill to maturity, and its after-tax yield beats the account available to you. The decision depends on access, current rates, taxes, and how much reinvestment work you will accept—not on a headline rate alone.
This guide compares the two choices using Treasury, IRS and FDIC definitions and shows how to make a date-specific, after-tax decision.

What you are comparing
Treasury bills
Treasury bills (T-bills) are short-term securities issued by the U.S. government. They mature in one year or less. Treasury sells a bill at face value or at a discount to face value; when it matures, the government pays the full face value. The difference between what you paid and the face value is your interest. TreasuryDirect describes them as “Bills are short-term securities that mature in one year or less.”
Available terms cover a range of dates. Treasury’s daily-rate page lists current 4-, 6-, 8-, 13-, 17-, 26- and 52-week bill tranches. Those daily figures are secondary-market quotations, not promises of what a future auction will pay. If you buy at auction, use the auction’s investment yield and price for your comparison. If you buy an already-issued bill through a brokerage, use the actual purchase price and maturity value shown for that trade.

Savings accounts
A savings account is a bank or credit-union deposit intended for ongoing access. The institution quotes an annual percentage yield (APY), credits interest under its account agreement and lets you request withdrawals subject to its procedures, limits and any applicable fees. The rate can change when the institution changes its pricing.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation reported a 0.39% national savings deposit rate in its March 2026 table. That is a nationwide benchmark calculated under the FDIC’s methodology, not a best-offer APY and not a reliable estimate of what every online or community bank is paying. Compare the actual account terms available to you.
Access: when will you need the cash?
Access timing is the most important difference. A savings account is built for withdrawals under its account terms. You can leave the balance available while the date of a car repair, tuition bill or emergency remains uncertain.

A T-bill pays its face value at maturity. If you need the money before then, you generally must sell the bill through a brokerage or other market channel. The sale price can be higher or lower than your purchase price because market yields and prices move in opposite directions. Intermediary processing and settlement times vary; the available sources do not establish one universal early-sale timetable.

Match the maturity to the date you expect to spend the money, while leaving a margin for delays. A bill maturing shortly before a fixed payment date can work for a planned expense. It is a poor substitute for cash that may be needed tonight.
How the yields are quoted
Treasury quotations can look higher or lower than a bank APY simply because they use different conventions. The Treasury’s bank-discount rate uses a 360-day year and the bill’s face value. Its coupon-equivalent, also called investment, yield uses the purchase price and a 365- or 366-day year, making it more comparable with an annualized deposit yield. Neither quote eliminates the need to consider the exact holding period, purchase price or compounding.
As of the Treasury page data displayed on October 9, 2026, the table’s corresponding bill-yield figures were not available in the material used for this article. Check the Treasury’s current auction results or daily rate table on the day you decide; do not substitute an old yield for a current one.
| Factor | Treasury bill | Savings account | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Return quote | A discount price and an annualized discount or investment yield | APY quoted by the institution | Use the investment yield for a closer apples-to-apples comparison, then calculate the dollars for your actual days. |
| Rate certainty | Purchase economics are fixed for the term if held to maturity | APY can change at the bank’s discretion | Ask whether the displayed rate is variable, introductory or subject to balance tiers. |
| Cash access | Full face value at maturity; early access normally requires a market sale | Withdraw under the account’s procedures and limits | Check transfer timing, withdrawal limits, minimum balance and fees. |
| Reinvestment | You choose whether to roll proceeds into a new bill at then-current rates | Interest generally remains in the account automatically | Decide in advance what happens on the maturity date. |
| Tax treatment | Federal income tax applies; state and local income taxes are exempt | Interest is taxable income under the applicable federal, state and local rules | Use your marginal tax rates, not a generic tax assumption. |
| Protection | Obligation of the U.S. government; market-price risk exists if sold early | Deposit protection depends on the institution and ownership category | Confirm that the institution is FDIC-insured and review current FDIC coverage guidance. |
Taxes can reverse a rate advantage
IRS guidance treats interest credited by a bank account as taxable income. Interest from a Treasury bill is also subject to federal income tax, but Treasury-bill interest is exempt from state and local income taxes. The exemption matters most to a saver who pays substantial state or local income tax; it matters less where those taxes are low or absent.

For a rough comparison, start with the gross return over the same number of days. A savings account’s gross interest is approximately principal multiplied by its APY and the fraction of the year the money remains deposited, with the account’s actual compounding method applied. A bill’s gross interest is its maturity value minus its purchase price. Then subtract federal tax from either result and state or local tax from the savings-account result where applicable. Your tax bracket, filing situation and jurisdiction determine the final numbers, so treat this as a comparison method rather than individualized tax advice.
Safety and protection are different concepts
A Treasury bill is a direct obligation of the U.S. government. That describes the issuer’s credit obligation, not a guarantee that you can sell tomorrow for the same price you paid. Selling before maturity exposes you to market-price movement.
A savings deposit may have FDIC insurance when held at an FDIC-insured bank and within the applicable ownership category and limits. Verify the institution’s insurance status and consult current FDIC guidance for the limits that apply to your ownership structure. The specific coverage limits were not re-verified for this comparison, and a brokerage balance or an uninsured deposit is not automatically covered merely because it is labeled “cash.”

Holding a bill to maturity
When you buy a bill and keep it until maturity, the purchase price and face-value payment establish the gross return for that term. That predictability is useful when a known bill must be paid on a known date. It does not lock in the rate for future savings: after maturity, a replacement bill will pay whatever the market then offers.

Keeping money in savings
A savings account keeps the balance liquid, but its APY can fall or rise. A high APY today is not a promise for the entire period you expect to save. Check whether the rate is ongoing or promotional, whether a minimum balance is required, whether only part of the balance earns the advertised rate, and whether monthly fees reduce the effective return.
Inflation and purchasing power
Both choices can lose purchasing power if inflation exceeds the after-tax return. The practical question for short-term money is usually preserving the principal and meeting the spending date, not maximizing a theoretical long-run return. That is why access and certainty should be evaluated before a small difference in quoted yield.

Opening or maintaining a savings account is generally simpler: deposit the cash, monitor the APY and withdraw when needed. You still need to read the account agreement for transfer holds, withdrawal procedures, balance tiers, caps, fees and any introductory period.
Recommended Free Tools
A bill requires more decisions. You select a term, choose an auction or secondary-market purchase, arrange payment through TreasuryDirect or a brokerage, record the maturity date and decide whether proceeds will be sent to your bank or reinvested. A brokerage may charge a spread or commission, depending on its schedule, and the trade screen—not a generic yield table—shows the price you will actually receive. None of those costs should be assumed to be zero without checking the provider.
Best Value
A repeatable decision process
- Write down the earliest realistic use date. Include an emergency scenario, not just your preferred date. If you might need the money immediately, keep that portion in an accessible account.
- Separate uncertain and known expenses. Use a savings account for the uncertain portion. For a fixed expense, identify a bill whose maturity is before the payment date and leave a cash buffer.
- Collect current figures on the same day. Record the savings account’s ongoing APY, balance requirements, caps, fees and variable-rate terms. Record the bill’s auction investment yield or the secondary-market purchase price, face value and maturity date.
- Convert both choices to dollars for the same holding period. Do not compare a 13-week bill’s discount rate with a savings APY without adjusting for the different day-count conventions and dates.
- Apply your tax situation. Subtract federal tax from both returns and applicable state or local tax from the savings return. The Treasury exemption is not a blanket exemption from federal tax.
- Check protection and access. Confirm FDIC insurance for a deposit institution, review the ownership category, and confirm how quickly you can move money. For a bill, understand the sale process if your plan changes.
- Choose what happens next. On a bill’s maturity date, either take the cash or reinvest at the then-current rate. In savings, review the APY periodically because the bank can change it.
Which choice fits common situations?
Emergency reserve or uncertain timing: savings account
If the amount might be needed for a medical bill, job interruption or urgent repair, dependable withdrawal access is worth more than a slightly higher projected yield. Keep the reserve in an account whose transfer process and balance rules you understand. You can still compare several account APYs, but do not sacrifice access for a maturity date you may miss.
Known expense in a few months: compare a matching bill
For a tax payment, tuition installment or planned purchase with a reliable date, compare a bill maturing shortly before the expense with the best suitable savings account. Holding to maturity removes the need to predict a sale price. Keep enough extra cash for a changed invoice or an earlier due date.
Several future dates: consider a bill ladder
A ladder divides the cash among bills with staggered maturities, such as several shorter terms rather than one bill maturing on a single day. It can create recurring access dates, but it adds purchases, record-keeping and reinvestment decisions. A ladder does not guarantee that each rung will earn the same yield; every reinvestment uses the rate available then.

Money needed within days: do not use a maturity product
A short bill can still mature too late for an urgent obligation. The possibility of selling early introduces a price and processing variable that a readily accessible deposit avoids. Keep near-term operating cash in the account you can actually use.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- “T-bills always pay more.” A bill’s current investment yield may be below a competitive account APY, and taxes can change the ranking. Compare current, like-for-like figures.
- Comparing discount rate with APY. The 360-day bank-discount convention and face-value base can make a bill look different from its coupon-equivalent yield. Use the investment yield and calculate the actual dollars.
- Using a stale bill yield. Rates move. The Treasury daily page’s available terms and quotations change, and a secondary-market quote is not a future auction guarantee. Obtain a current quote before buying.
- Ignoring promotional savings terms. An introductory APY, balance cap or monthly fee can make the long-run return different from the headline number.
- Forgetting the maturity date. A bill that matures after the money is needed forces an early sale or a scramble for other cash. Put the date on your calendar and decide in advance how proceeds will move.
- Assuming all “cash” has the same protection. Verify FDIC insurance for deposits and understand that a Treasury security’s government backing does not eliminate market risk before maturity.
- Overlooking local taxes. The Treasury-bill state and local exemption can be valuable, but only your jurisdiction and tax bracket show how much it changes the net result.
A concise rule for choosing
Choose the savings account when access is uncertain, the money is part of your emergency reserve, or the account’s after-tax return is competitive once fees and rate changes are considered. Choose a Treasury bill when the spending date is known, you can hold through maturity, and the current after-tax investment yield is better for that exact period. If the two net returns are close, the account’s simpler access may be worth more than a small theoretical gain.
