Choose a Treasury bill when you know when you will need the money and can hold it until its maturity; choose a high-yield savings account when access timing is uncertain and convenient withdrawals matter. Neither is universally better. Compare a current bill auction rate with a savings account’s current APY, then account for access terms, fees, minimums, insurance, and your tax situation.
How the two options differ
| Factor | Treasury bills | High-yield savings account |
|---|---|---|
| What you own | A marketable short-term U.S. government security. | A bank deposit account. |
| How returns work | The rate is set at auction. A bill is generally sold at a discount or at par; the difference between its purchase price and face value is its return at maturity. See TreasuryDirect’s bill details and pricing explanation. | Compare the account’s current APY. A specific provider’s rate, fees, minimums, eligibility, and access terms depend on its offer and were not established by the national benchmark. |
| Access to cash | Pays face value at maturity. Treasury permits early sale, but the sale price and timing are not guaranteed to equal a maturity payment. | Withdrawal and transfer timing depend on the account’s terms; check them with the provider. |
| Protection | Not an FDIC-insured deposit; it is a U.S. government obligation. | Qualifying deposits at FDIC-insured banks are covered within applicable limits and ownership rules. |
| Taxes | Interest is federally taxable and exempt from state and local income taxes. | Do not assume the same state or local tax treatment as a Treasury bill; check applicable tax guidance. |
The IRS explains Treasury bill income and its tax treatment in Publication 550 (2025). Tax outcomes depend on individual circumstances, so a pre-tax rate comparison may not reflect what you keep.

When a Treasury bill may fit
A bill can fit a planned expense—such as a payment due on a known date—if you can align a maturity with that date and do not need the money sooner. TreasuryDirect lists regular maturities of 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26, and 52 weeks. Its listed minimum purchase is $100, in $100 increments. TreasuryDirect’s Treasury Bills page says bills may be held to maturity or sold earlier.

At maturity, Treasury pays the bill’s face value. If you sell before then, do not treat the sale as equivalent to withdrawing money from a savings account: the amount you receive may differ from face value, and the process depends on where you bought the bill. Treasury bills can be purchased through TreasuryDirect or a bank or broker; confirm the intermediary’s fees, minimums, market access, and settlement process before relying on an early sale. See TreasuryDirect’s in-depth bill guide.

When a high-yield savings account may fit
A savings account may be more suitable for cash you might need at an uncertain time. It avoids choosing a security maturity, but the account’s actual withdrawal and transfer arrangements are provider-specific. Before opening one, check its current APY, minimum balance or opening deposit, fees, eligibility, and how quickly withdrawals or transfers reach the account you use for spending.
The FDIC’s standard deposit-insurance limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category; ownership rules determine how accounts are aggregated. Treasury bills are investments, not insured deposits. Review the FDIC’s explanation at Your Insured Deposits and confirm the bank’s status and how your deposits are titled.

How to compare returns fairly
- Use dated rates. Check a recent Treasury bill auction result and the savings provider’s current APY on the same comparison date. Bill rates are set at auction; savings APYs are provider offers and should not be treated as fixed for a bill’s term.
- Match the time horizon. Compare the bill maturity closest to when you expect to use the cash with the account’s APY over that same period. If you may need the money early, include the possibility that a bill must be sold before maturity.
- Use the same balance and net out costs. Apply each rate to the amount you actually plan to hold, then account for any applicable account or transaction fees and minimum-balance conditions.
- Consider taxes after the headline rate. Treasury bill interest is subject to federal income tax and exempt from state and local income taxes. Do not assume bank interest receives equivalent state or local treatment; consult applicable tax guidance for your circumstances.
The FDIC’s National Rates and Rate Caps table is a national benchmark, not a quote for a particular high-yield account. Its March 16, 2026 table should not be mistaken for a current provider offer. No named account’s current APY or terms are established here, so a live winner cannot be declared without checking current offers.
A practical choice by cash need
- Known date, able to wait: Consider a bill whose maturity matches the planned use date, after checking the current auction rate and purchase route.
- Uncertain date or frequent access: Consider a savings account whose transfer and withdrawal terms suit the way you need to use the money.
- Cash has more than one job: You can divide it, keeping the portion that must remain accessible in savings and matching only the planned portion to bill maturities.
For short-term cash, access and timing can outweigh a small difference in headline yield. Choose only after checking the current rates and the terms that govern your specific purchase or account.
