Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: Use a high-yield savings account (HYSA) when you may need the money on demand and accept that the bank can change the rate. Use a Treasury bill (T-bill) when the cash has a known date, you can hold it to maturity, and federal-only taxation plus U.S. government backing fit your plan. A T-bill is not an instant-access deposit: selling early exposes you to the market price, while an HYSA follows the bank’s transfer, withdrawal, and account rules.
Neither option is a universal winner. Compare the actual rate convention, holding period, taxes, protection, and access requirements at the same point in time.

| What determines the return? | An auction establishes the discount rate or investment yield for that specific bill. You buy below par or at par and receive face value at maturity. | The bank sets an APY that can change. Read the current rate disclosure and account agreement. |
| When is cash available? | On the stated maturity date, or earlier only by selling through a bank, broker, or dealer at the market price then available. | According to the institution’s transfer and withdrawal procedures, limits, cutoffs, and any conditions. |
| What protects the money? | Not FDIC-insured. It is a U.S. government security backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. | Qualifying deposits at an FDIC-insured bank are generally covered up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. |
| How is interest taxed? | Federal income tax applies; bill interest is exempt from state and local income taxes. | Bank-account interest is generally taxable income under federal rules and may also be subject to state and local tax. |
| Best fit | Money assigned to a date-specific use when you can hold to maturity or accept sale-price uncertainty. | Emergency reserves and other cash that must remain convenient to transfer or withdraw. |
The protection labels describe different legal structures. FDIC insurance covers qualifying bank deposits, not securities. Treasury backing is a credit guarantee of the U.S. government, not a deposit-insurance policy.

What a Treasury bill is
A T-bill is a short-term, marketable U.S. Treasury security. TreasuryDirect lists regular bill terms of 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26, and 52 weeks. The Treasury sells a bill at a discount to face value or, depending on the auction price, at par. At maturity, the holder receives the bill’s face value; the difference between what was paid and the face value is the interest. There are no periodic coupon checks during the term. Details are set out in the Treasury’s Treasury Bills guidance.

For example, a bill with a $10,000 face value may cost less than $10,000 at auction. If you keep it until maturity, the Treasury pays $10,000. Your dollar return is the difference, subject to taxes. The exact purchase price depends on the auction and the rate convention used for that issue.
Bill terms and the maturity question
The practical answer to “What are the maturity terms for Treasury bills?” is the seven regular terms above. A term is measured from the issue date to the maturity date. Match the term to the date you expect to spend the money, allowing a safety margin for weekends, holidays, and settlement. A 13-week bill, for instance, is useful only if the cash can remain invested for that period without forcing an early sale.
Where you can buy and hold a bill
You can purchase bills through TreasuryDirect or through a bank or broker. TreasuryDirect’s Treasury Bills In Depth material explains the purchase and bidding context. In a TreasuryDirect account, you can direct the proceeds of a maturing bill to the designated bank account or schedule reinvestment. If no instruction sends the proceeds elsewhere, TreasuryDirect says the principal is deposited to the designated bank account on the maturity date; see Reinvest or Redeem Treasury Bills.
How a high-yield savings account works
An HYSA is a bank deposit account marketed with a rate that is often higher than a traditional savings account. The bank sets the APY and can change it. Your access is governed by that institution’s account agreement: transfer methods, processing times, daily or monthly limits, minimum balances, fees, eligibility, and cutoff times all vary. No single standard for those features is established, so check the specific disclosures before moving money.
Confirm that the product is actually a deposit at an FDIC-insured bank. A financial-technology company or brokerage interface may arrange a deposit at a partner bank, a sweep, or a different investment product; the name of the app alone does not establish FDIC coverage. The FDIC’s Understanding Deposit Insurance and Your Insured Deposits explain which deposits qualify and how ownership categories work.

Returns: compare the numbers correctly
A T-bill has an auction-set return
The rate for an individual bill is fixed once its auction determines the price. Future auctions can produce different rates. TreasuryDirect explains that bill pricing commonly uses a discount-rate convention based on a 360-day year, while auction result pages report the applicable rates for each issue. See Understanding Pricing and Interest Rates.
A discount rate is not automatically the same number as an APY. The discount calculation uses face value and a 360-day basis; an investment yield annualizes the return on the amount actually invested and may use a different day-count convention. Compare an HYSA APY with a properly annualized bill yield on consistent dates and assumptions, rather than placing a raw discount rate beside an APY and declaring the larger number better.

An HYSA rate can change during your holding period
The APY shown when you open an account is not a promise that the same rate will apply for a year. Banks can change savings rates as market conditions and their pricing decisions change. Ask whether a quoted rate is ongoing or promotional, what balance tier applies, and when the bank can revise it. A bill held to maturity has a known auction return for that bill; an HYSA has flexible access but an uncertain future rate.
A consistent comparison method
- Set the principal and dates. State how much cash is being considered and the exact start and end dates.
- Identify the rate convention. Record the bill’s term, auction date, discount rate or investment yield, and the HYSA’s APY and rate-change terms.
- Model cash flows. For a bill, use the purchase price and maturity value. For an HYSA, account for the rate applying to each sub-period if the bank changes it.
- State reinvestment assumptions. A bill ladder’s later rates are unknown, and an HYSA may reprice. Do not project today’s rate across future periods without labeling that assumption.
- Apply taxes appropriate to your residence and filing situation. The state-tax exemption for Treasury interest can affect the net result, but it does not automatically outweigh a higher or lower gross rate.
There is no live rate ranking in this article because auction results and bank APYs change. Check the current auction announcement and the current account disclosure immediately before acting.
Liquidity: maturity is not the same as withdrawal
Holding a bill to maturity
If your bill reaches maturity, the Treasury pays face value according to the holding arrangement. TreasuryDirect lets you redeem a maturing bill or reinvest the proceeds into another bill. This provides a known date for the principal, assuming you do not need the money sooner.

Selling a bill early
TreasuryDirect states, “You can hold a bill until it matures or sell it before it matures.” The sale normally goes through a bank, broker, or dealer in the secondary market; TreasuryDirect’s FAQs About Treasury Marketable Securities describe that marketability. The market price may be above or below the amount you expected at maturity. If market interest rates rise after you buy, an older bill can be less attractive and may sell for less; if rates fall, it may sell for more. You also need to ask the intermediary about its sale process, settlement timing, and fees.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Marketable” therefore does not mean instant cash at face value. An early sale is a market transaction, not an account withdrawal, and it can create a gain or loss relative to your original purchase price.
Accessing an HYSA
An HYSA generally allows transfers to a linked bank account, but the timing and conditions are institution-specific. Verify:
- Whether transfers are ACH, wire, debit-card, or another method.
- Business-day cutoffs, holds, and expected settlement time.
- Daily, monthly, or per-transfer limits.
- Minimum balances, fees, and any penalties or conditions.
- How weekends, holidays, and newly deposited funds are handled.
An HYSA may be the better liquidity tool for an emergency reserve because the account is designed for ongoing withdrawals. It is not a guarantee of instant access; the bank’s agreement controls.
Risk and protection differences
T-bill market-price and timing risk
The principal amount expected at maturity is not the amount guaranteed if you sell beforehand. You may also face a timing problem if a sale or settlement does not complete when a bill payment is due. A bill ladder reduces the chance that all cash is locked at once, but each rung still has a maturity date and future rungs must be reinvested at then-current rates.

FDIC deposit coverage
For a qualifying deposit at an FDIC-insured bank, the standard coverage limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The limit includes principal plus accrued interest through the bank’s failure date. Balances above the applicable limit are not covered by that standard amount, and deposits at different banks or ownership categories must be analyzed under the FDIC rules rather than assumed to combine or separate automatically.
Government backing is not FDIC insurance
FDIC materials identify Treasury securities as investments backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government and distinguish them from insured bank deposits. A T-bill is therefore not FDIC-insured. That distinction does not eliminate every risk: an owner can still sell at an unfavorable market price, misjudge the cash date, or face reinvestment and inflation risk.
Rate, reinvestment, and inflation risk
- Rate risk for future cash: A bill’s auction rate is fixed for that issue, but proceeds reinvested later receive whatever rate the next auction offers.
- HYSA repricing: The bank can raise or lower the APY during your holding period.
- Inflation: Neither product guarantees a positive inflation-adjusted return. A nominal gain can still lose purchasing power if prices rise faster.
- Opportunity cost: Locking money into a bill can force an early sale, while leaving too much in a low or falling savings rate can reduce earnings.
Tax treatment
The IRS says most interest received or credited to an account that can be withdrawn without penalty is taxable in the year it becomes available. Bank-account interest is generally taxable interest. Treasury bill, note, and bond interest is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local income taxes. See IRS Topic no. 403, Interest received.
Your residence, filing status, other income, and use of the cash can change the after-tax comparison. Do not treat the state-and-local exemption as a guaranteed reason to choose a bill; compare net outcomes using your own tax situation, and seek professional advice when the amounts are material.
Choosing by cash timeline
Money needed on an uncertain date
Keep this bucket in an account whose transfer rules meet the likely emergency. Confirm the bank’s current terms and leave enough in immediately available cash to cover processing delays. A bill that may need to be sold at an unknown price is a poor substitute for this reserve.
Best Value
Money needed on a known date
If you have a defined payment date and can match a 4-, 6-, 8-, 13-, 17-, 26-, or 52-week term, a bill can provide a known maturity value. Choose a maturity before the spending date rather than on the same day, and avoid relying on an early sale.
Money with several possible dates
Divide the cash into buckets. Keep the uncertain-date portion in an HYSA and use bills for amounts tied to dates you can forecast. A ladder of different maturities can spread access dates, but its future reinvestment returns are not known in advance.
How to implement a Treasury-bill plan
- Write the spending date and minimum cash buffer. Include a cushion for schedule changes.
- Pick a term that ends before the spending date. Use one of the regular Treasury bill terms and account for settlement and holidays.
- Choose a holding channel. TreasuryDirect, a bank, and a broker have different interfaces, records, sale procedures, and possible fees.
- Review the auction information. Record the term, issue date, maturity date, bid method available to you, and the rate convention shown.
- Decide on maturity instructions. In TreasuryDirect, schedule redemption to the designated bank account or reinvestment if the cash is not needed.
- Plan for an early-sale contingency. If the date could move forward, identify how the bill would be sold and accept that the market price may differ from face value.
How to evaluate an HYSA before depositing
- Verify the legal bank holding the deposit and its FDIC-insured status.
- Read the APY disclosure, including whether the rate is variable, promotional, tiered, or conditional.
- Check transfer methods, cutoff times, holds, withdrawal limits, minimum balances, and fees.
- Understand how balances are assigned to ownership categories and aggregate deposits at the same insured bank when checking the $250,000 limit.
- Confirm how statements, tax forms, account closure, and customer-service escalation work.
- Keep a separate access plan for emergencies if transfers are not immediate.
Using both can be rational
A two-bucket plan is often simpler than forcing one product to do every job. Put emergency and uncertain-date cash in an HYSA that meets your access requirements. Put date-specific funds in bills whose maturities precede the planned expenses. Reinvest only the portion that remains assigned to a future date. This structure does not promise a higher return; it aligns each dollar with the liquidity and certainty it needs.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing a T-bill discount rate directly with an HYSA APY without annualizing on consistent assumptions.
- Calling a T-bill “FDIC-insured” or assuming an app’s branding proves that a balance is an insured deposit.
- Assuming a bill can be redeemed from TreasuryDirect before maturity like a savings withdrawal.
- Projecting today’s bill auction rate or savings APY for a full year without stating a reinvestment or repricing assumption.
- Ignoring state and local tax treatment when comparing after-tax returns.
- Putting all emergency cash into bills and then discovering that an early sale may produce less than the expected maturity amount.
- Ignoring the FDIC ownership-category and per-bank limits when balances approach $250,000.
Bottom line for a U.S. saver
Choose the HYSA when access flexibility is the priority and you are comfortable with a variable bank rate. Choose a T-bill when the cash has a date-specific job, the term fits, and you can hold through maturity; its federal-only interest taxation may improve the net result for some residents. If either timing or access is uncertain, split the cash rather than treating an early bill sale as equivalent to withdrawing from a bank account.
