The casting comes from Kenneth Shepard’s Kotaku report, published October 8, 2026, which says Tyler Hoechlin stepped down because of scheduling conflicts. Willingham’s stated approach is built on restraint: a Sephiroth who is always in control and never needs to raise his voice to be the most dangerous presence in a scene.
What Kotaku reports about the casting
According to Kotaku, the cast of Final Fantasy VII Revelation discussed the Remake trilogy at a New York City Comic-Con panel. At that panel, Travis Willingham was introduced as joining the trilogy’s final chapter as Sephiroth’s voice actor, replacing Tyler Hoechlin, who stepped down because of scheduling conflicts.

Treat these details as Kotaku’s account of the panel. The report is based on an interview and is not an official Square Enix announcement. Nothing in the reporting establishes the change through a separate Square Enix statement, so the casting, the reason for it, and the timing all rest on Kotaku’s reporting.

Kotaku describes Revelation as the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. The same report says Marisha Ray is joining Matt Mercer in the game as Polydroid Shiva, a non-player character. It gives the launch date as April 8, but the article does not state the year, so no year should be read into that date.

Willingham’s approach to playing Sephiroth
Willingham’s comments at the panel focused less on the look of the character and more on how Sephiroth should carry himself in a scene. He worked from a specific reference point, then described a director’s note, then gave his own read.
Toshiyuki Morikawa as the reference point
Willingham named long-time Japanese voice actor Toshiyuki Morikawa as his guide. He praised Morikawa’s ability to sound “light and alluring” and then “very dangerous and menacing,” and described Sephiroth as an ambiguous character who shifts between those registers. His summary of the approach was direct: “the North Star of the voice of Sephiroth is always gonna be Morikawa-san.”

Kirk Thornton’s direction: always in control
Willingham relayed a note from voice director Kirk Thornton about how the character should feel. In Willingham’s retelling of Thornton’s view, “He always feels like he’s in control of every situation. There’s nothing that’s gonna confuse him or surprise him.” That idea, that Sephiroth is never caught off guard, sets the baseline for the performance.
A restrained, quietly dangerous villain
Willingham’s own preference follows from that direction. Kotaku quotes him saying, “There is always, to me, nothing more dangerous than the villain in the room that doesn’t need to shout to be heard.” In his framing, the menace comes from composure rather than volume, which is also why the ambiguity Morikawa brings matters to him: a Sephiroth who seems calm can be more unsettling than one who is visibly angry.
