For a U.S. TSA checkpoint, keep larger electronics near the top of your carry-on, follow the instructions for your screening lane, and pack fragile or expensive devices in your cabin bag. Spare lithium batteries and power banks must stay in carry-on baggage. Charge your devices before you leave in case an officer asks you to turn one on.
Do you need to take your laptop out at airport security?
At standard TSA screening, travelers are instructed to remove personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone from carry-on bags and place them in a bin with nothing above or below them. Keep large devices within reach
Pack laptops and other large electronics on the top layer of your carry-on so you can remove them without unpacking the whole bag. Keep cables and small accessories from covering or tangling around them.

Keep the bag orderly
TSA advises travelers to organize carry-ons and keep them uncluttered to facilitate screening. A small electronics pouch can help group cables, chargers, and adapters, but it is optional: it is not a TSA requirement and cannot guarantee faster screening or prevent loss or damage.
Should expensive electronics go in checked luggage or your carry-on?
TSA permits many electronics in either carry-on or checked baggage, but recommends carrying fragile or expensive devices in your carry-on. Keeping a device with you makes it easier to access during screening; it does not guarantee protection against theft, loss, or damage.

If you use a lock on checked baggage, TSA’s checklist advises choosing a TSA-recognized lock. That is a separate checked-bag consideration, not a guarantee that your gadgets will be protected at the checkpoint. See the TSA checklist.
Can you pack a power bank in checked luggage?
No. TSA says spare lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries, including power banks, must be carried in the cabin, not placed in checked baggage. Its published guidance gives a 100 Wh limit for ordinary spare lithium-ion batteries and requires airline approval for specified larger spare batteries. Will TSA ask you to turn on your phone or another device?
An officer may ask you to power on an electronic device. TSA says a device that cannot be powered on will not be permitted onboard, so charge devices before traveling and keep them accessible. TSA also says in its cited checkpoint guidance that it does not read or copy information from devices; that statement applies to TSA’s guidance and should not be assumed to describe procedures in other countries.
