But its evidence does not show that mythology is a major standalone travel trend. For your own holiday, the practical question is whether an event or heritage site gives you enough reason to travel on its dates—and whether the rest of the trip is worth the cost and crowds.
What are the travel trends for 2027?
Skyscanner’s 2027 report identifies seven themes: Signal Severance (off-grid travel), Together Trips (group getaways), Grand Odysseys (history), Currency Chasers (spending), Sound Bound (music), Gym-cation (active travel) and Merch Tourism (souvenirs). Its music theme, “Sound Bound,” is framed as “Swapping headline acts for hidden stages”; “Grand Odysseys” is described as “Journeying through legendary landscapes.” The report presents these as trends in travel choices, not a ranked list of destinations or a guarantee of what every traveler will do. The report’s snapshot says 20% of respondents plan to attend music festivals or carnivals, while 29% plan to visit historical attractions and 28% to explore a museum or gallery. Those figures need a qualification: the page introduces the snapshot as 2,000 US travelers, but a footnote says the OnePoll survey covered 2,000 UK travelers between June 11 and 18, 2026. Skyscanner’s page does not resolve the discrepancy, so the numbers should not be treated as reliable estimates for either country. They do indicate the kinds of activities the report associates with its trends.
Will concerts, festivals and carnivals shape your next holiday?
They may, if you choose a trip around a performance or celebration rather than treating it as an add-on. Skyscanner’s “Sound Bound” theme points to interest in smaller or less prominent stages as well as music travel, and its snapshot groups music festivals and carnivals together. That is evidence of an event-led travel idea, not proof that concerts are displacing other holiday motivations or that a particular event will be affordable or easy to book.

There is also a concrete, country-specific example. Thailand’s Tourism Authority has named 2027 “The Year of Transformation” and says its Festival Economy strategy aims to make Thailand a year-round events destination. It highlights international events, Pride, music, arts and design, sport, and cultural celebrations such as the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession and Nakhon Phanom Illuminated Boat Procession. The authority targets tourism revenue growth of at least 5% over 2026; that is a target, not a reported result or a global forecast. Tourism Authority of Thailand’s 2027 strategy
Before committing to an event-led holiday, check whether the event date and ticket access are firm, then compare the full trip—not just the ticket. Event dates can concentrate demand, but the cited sources do not quantify price changes for any specific concert or carnival. The World Economic Forum’s 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index discusses affordability, investment and sustainability pressures across the sector; it does not measure the price effect of an individual event. - Confirm the event date, location, ticket terms and entry requirements before buying non-refundable travel.
- Compare transport and accommodation for the event dates with nearby dates, and budget for local travel and time in crowds.
- Look for worthwhile activities beyond the main event in case plans change or tickets are unavailable.
- Consider how the visit affects local residents, public spaces and cultural sites, and follow local guidance.
Can mythology or history inspire a trip?
History has a clearer place in Skyscanner’s report than mythology: “Grand Odysseys” covers journeys through historical and “legendary” landscapes, and the snapshot says 29% plan to visit historical attractions. Mythology is not separately measured or identified as a global 2027 trend in the report. It can still be a personal reason to travel—through places, stories or traditions that interest you—but the available evidence does not establish it as a major independent holiday driver.
If you are weighing an event city break against a history- or mythology-themed itinerary, compare the event or site’s date and access, total travel and accommodation costs, what else the destination offers, transport and crowd-management demands, and whether your plans engage respectfully with local culture. A historical or mythological theme may be easier to pursue at your own pace; an event can impose fixed dates and concentrated crowds. Neither approach is inherently the better holiday.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2027 the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism in resolution 78/260, adopted on February 26, 2024. That designation makes destination resilience a timely consideration, but it is not evidence that event tourism is growing globally or that any one trip is sustainable. UN resolution 78/260
For travelers, responsible planning is practical: consider public transport where available, respect local event and heritage-site rules, and avoid treating living cultural traditions as props. A destination’s year-round event ambitions may benefit local businesses, but the sources cited here do not establish the impacts of particular festivals on residents or the environment. Those effects depend on the place and event.
