Transperth tap’n’go: how contactless payment works, what it costs and whether SmartRider is still cheaper

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transperth’s tap’n’go contactless payment is now live across metropolitan buses, trains and ferries. Since the 8 December 2025 launch, passengers have been able to tag on and off with a contactless Visa or Mastercard, or the same card in a supported digital wallet. The trade-off is important: contactless is charged at the standard cash fare, does not provide concession pricing and can cost more than SmartRider.

The short answer

  • Use a contactless Visa or Mastercard card, phone, smartwatch or other supported wallet device.
  • Tag on and tag off for every journey, using the same physical card or same device both times.
  • Contactless payments use the cash fare. SmartRider discounts can be cheaper.
  • Concession passengers must continue using the appropriate SmartRider.
  • Present only one card or device to avoid a card clash.

What changed on 8 December 2025?

The launch activated open-loop bank-card payment on Transperth validators; it did not create a new type of SmartRider. Passengers can use physical contactless Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards, or those cards held in supported implementations of Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and other digital wallets. Smartphones, smartwatches and compatible devices work as the payment method represented by the card in the device.

Contactless became available on metropolitan Transperth buses, trains and ferries on 8 December 2025, according to the SmartRider Upgrade Project. The project page says the regional-town rollout was expected to finish by the end of 2025, but it does not publish a current location-by-location completion table.

Why did the rollout take years?

Contactless payment was first floated in 2018, with an initial rollout target of 2019. In 2023, the Western Australian Government said the upgrades would be operating by mid-2024, but the timetable slipped again before the December 2025 launch.

PerthNow reported that the project cost had risen from about $58 million to approximately $68 million. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti attributed delays to the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; those are the government’s explanations, not an independent finding of causation.

The spending covered more than a bank-card switch. The upgrade included more than 4,000 new readers, replacement validators, SmartRider hubs, payment and encryption infrastructure, pay-by-plate parking machines and new revenue-inspection equipment.

How to use tap’n’go

Before you board

  1. Choose a contactless Visa or Mastercard, or its supported digital-wallet version.
  2. Make sure contactless payments are enabled and your card or device is usable.
  3. Take the intended card out of a wallet or card stack. Presenting several cards together can cause a card clash.

Bus

Tag on immediately at the front validator when boarding. Tag off before leaving; Transperth’s conditions allow a bus tag-off at the front or rear. Follow the required boarding procedure and do not assume that touching a reader later will correct an incomplete trip.

Train

Tag on at the station validator or gate before entering the paid area. At your destination, tag off at the station gate or validator.

Ferry

Tag on immediately when boarding and tag off before leaving the ferry.

The same-card rule

Transperth treats a physical card and the same card in Apple Pay or another wallet as different payment methods. If you tag on with the plastic card, tag off with that plastic card. If you start with a phone, finish with that phone; a smartwatch is a separate method. The complete tagging rules are set out in the Ticket Conditions of Use.

What happens when you miss a tag-off?

A missing or mismatched tag-off prevents the system from calculating the actual journey and can trigger a default fare. The conditions specify these examples:

  • Bus: the cash fare for the longest journey possible from the boarding location.
  • Train: the cash “Go Anywhere” fare.
  • Ferry: the cash fare between Barrack Street and Mends Street.

In other words, “tap on and forget” can cost more than the trip you actually made. Transfers and separate journey legs also have specific tagging requirements, with limited exceptions described in the official conditions.

What does contactless cost?

Contactless is charged at the standard cash rate rather than the discounted SmartRider rate. The following Transperth fare table is effective 1 January 2026; it is not necessarily the price on launch day.

Fare type Cash/contactless SmartRider, 10% discount SmartRider, 20% discount
Two sections $2.40 $2.16 $1.92
Go Anywhere $3.50 $3.15 $2.80
DayRider cash ticket $7.00 — —

SmartRider’s optional Autoload arrangement can provide up to a 20% discount, as described on Transperth’s SmartRider fares page. Contactless users do not automatically receive a SmartRider-style discount or fare cap.

Contactless or SmartRider?

Issue Contactless card or wallet SmartRider
Setup Use an existing Visa or Mastercard; no transport card purchase Buy and load a SmartRider
Fare level Standard cash fare Discounted fares may apply
Concessions Not available Available through the relevant concession card
Balance and billing Charged through the payment network Stored-value card with optional Autoload
Best suited to Visitors and occasional riders Regular commuters and concession passengers

A standard SmartRider costs $10, with a minimum $10 value load for a standard card, according to the project information. Transperth describes SmartRider as the cheapest and most convenient option, while contactless is the simpler alternative when you do not want to obtain a transport card.

Who should avoid tap’n’go?

  • Passengers entitled to student, senior, disability or other concession fares.
  • Regular commuters who want the lowest standard fare.
  • Families or groups who need a FamilyRider or another SmartRider-specific product.
  • Anyone likely to switch between a physical card and its phone or watch version mid-journey.
  • Travellers who need an unlimited long-term contactless travel history rather than the available portal record.

Regional availability

The launch announcement listed Bunbury, Busselton, Kalgoorlie, Esperance and Albany for early-December access, with Geraldton, Karratha and Port Hedland scheduled for later in December. That was a staged planned timetable, not a statement that every site went live on the same day. The current official project page confirms the metropolitan launch and says regional rollout was expected to be completed by the end of 2025, without supplying a dated, location-by-location status list. Check Transperth’s current service information before relying on contactless in a particular regional town.

Common mistakes and edge cases

Card clashes

A bank card inside a wallet, a phone over a wallet containing cards, or a phone and smartwatch presented together can expose multiple contactless credentials. The reader may reject the tap or charge a different card. Present one card or device only, as advised on Transperth’s contactless guidance.

Dead phone battery

A digital wallet may be unavailable if the device cannot power on. Carry the matching physical card or use another transport payment method; do not switch to a different credential for the tag-off.

Lost or replaced card

Contact your bank about a lost or replaced card and check the contactless journey record. A replacement card is a new payment credential; do not assume the system treats it as the card used earlier.

Concessions

Contactless payment cannot identify concession eligibility. Use the correct concession SmartRider to receive that fare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payment records, privacy and inspections

Contactless users can view up to 35 days of trips and payments through Transperth’s customer portal. A temporary $0 pre-authorisation may appear on a bank statement while the card is verified; the time it remains depends on the bank. SmartRider transactions are viewed through My Account instead. Details are on the contactless payments page.

Transperth’s new revenue-inspection devices can read the contactless card or wallet used for travel. The project page says the devices do not store passenger information, and officers will not photograph a SmartRider or other payment method. If an authorised officer asks, the conditions require you to present the same SmartRider, card or device used to travel—not merely a different card linked to the same bank account.

Bottom line

For visitors and occasional riders, tap’n’go removes the need to buy a SmartRider: present one compatible card or device, tag on and off, and check the journey record if something looks wrong. For regular commuters and anyone with concession eligibility, SmartRider remains the better choice because contactless is billed at the cash fare and does not carry concession benefits.
