Use Samsung Smart Switch when you need a computer backup that can be restored to a Galaxy device. Use OpenMTP when you need to browse storage and copy individual music files or folders between a Samsung phone or tablet and a Mac. The two workflows solve different problems, so choosing the right one first prevents most failed transfers.
Choose the transfer method that matches your goal
There is no single Samsung-to-Mac music workflow for every situation. Smart Switch is Samsung’s documented backup-and-restore utility: it saves supported Galaxy data on the Mac and restores that backup to a Galaxy device later. OpenMTP is a direct Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) file-copy tool: it presents the Mac and the connected Samsung device in separate panes so you can select tracks and folders yourself.

| What you need to do | Smart Switch | OpenMTP direct copy |
|---|---|---|
| Make a whole-device backup and restore it to a Galaxy phone | Samsung documents backup to a Mac and restore to a phone. Music is one of the Android data categories listed by Samsung. | Not the documented purpose; it exposes device storage for file copying. |
| Copy selected tracks or folders | The documented process selects backup categories or items; it is not described as a Mac-side music-file browser. | Copies chosen files or folders between the Mac pane and the MTP-device pane. |
| Software authority | Official Samsung support workflow. | Third-party software instructions with Samsung-specific setup guidance. |
| Typical obstacle | Unsupported operating-system or Android versions, unsupported formats, or expectations that the backup can be browsed like a normal folder. | A charge-only cable, locked phone, missing file-transfer USB mode, or another application holding the MTP connection. |
If you are replacing or resetting a Galaxy and want its supported data preserved, start with Smart Switch. If your goal is simply to move a few MP3, FLAC, or other audio files in either direction, use OpenMTP.

Check the documented compatibility requirements
Samsung’s US Smart Switch support page lists macOS 10.9 or later and Android 4.3 or later for general transfers. Samsung lists Android 7.0 or later when encrypted data is involved. These are Smart Switch requirements; they are not a promise that every combination of macOS, Android, and third-party MTP software behaves identically.
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C to C Cable for up to 25W Charging Speeds
- Get it in black or white to suit your style and device
Menu names can differ with the Galaxy model, Android release, macOS release, and installed software version. If a label in these instructions is slightly different on your phone, look for the equivalent USB or file-transfer setting rather than assuming the device is incompatible.
Use a cable that carries data
The wired methods require a USB cable capable of data transfer. OpenMTP’s connection instructions specifically warn that some cables only charge. A cable that fits the ports physically can still lack data wiring, so test the cable you already own before buying another. Match the connector on the Galaxy and the port or adapter on the Mac.
Unlock the phone and watch for permission prompts
Keep the Galaxy unlocked while establishing the connection. Android may ask whether the connected computer is allowed to access phone data; tap Allow. If the phone remains in charging mode, open the USB notification and choose Transferring files (the wording can vary slightly by model).

Confirm what kind of audio files you have
Samsung lists MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, and FLAC among supported music formats. A listed format means Smart Switch recognizes that file category; it does not guarantee that every music player app on the destination device will play every file or codec variant.
Samsung also states on its Smart Switch support page: Only music and video files purchased from iTunes after 2009 can be transferred. Samsung describes older iTunes purchases as not DRM-free and therefore not transferable through that Smart Switch path. This restriction belongs to the Smart Switch support guidance for those purchased files; it should not be treated as a rule governing every personal file copied with MTP.
Method 1: Back up music with Samsung Smart Switch
Smart Switch is the better choice when the music is part of a broader Galaxy backup or when you intend to restore supported data to another Galaxy. It creates a backup set on the Mac rather than presenting the phone as an ordinary Finder folder.

1. Install Smart Switch on both devices
- Install Smart Switch on the Mac and on the Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Connect the Galaxy to the Mac with a USB data cable.
- Unlock the Galaxy. When Android asks for permission to access phone data, tap Allow.
2. Create the Mac backup
- Open Smart Switch on the Mac.
- Select Backup.
- Review the categories or items selected for backup and select or clear categories as needed. Keep the music category selected if you want Samsung’s listed Android music data included.
- Start the backup and leave the phone connected until Smart Switch reports completion.
Samsung says the default Mac location for a Smart Switch backup is /Users/[username]/Documents/Samsung/SmartSwitch/backup. The bracketed username represents the macOS account name; it is part of the path pattern, not text to enter literally.
3. Restore the backup to a Galaxy
- Connect the Galaxy that should receive the backup to the Mac and open Smart Switch.
- Choose Restore.
- If Smart Switch offers a choice of backup sets or categories, select the backup data you want.
- Choose Restore now and keep both devices connected until the process finishes.
The documented restore destination is a Galaxy phone. Smart Switch therefore fits a phone-replacement or reset workflow, not a plan to open the backup as a normal, manually browsable music library on macOS.
When Smart Switch is the wrong tool
If you need to drag three albums into a particular folder, pull one recording off the phone, or organize files directly in Finder, Smart Switch’s backup model is less direct. Use the OpenMTP workflow instead. Smart Switch can also interfere with another application’s MTP access; the troubleshooting section below explains the conflict.

Method 2: Copy selected music with OpenMTP
OpenMTP is the direct-file route for moving music in either direction. Its Samsung-specific instructions describe a Mac pane and an MTP-device pane, allowing you to copy files or folders rather than creating a complete Smart Switch backup.
1. Install OpenMTP
- Download OpenMTP from its developer and move the application to the Mac’s Applications folder.
- Quit other utilities that might be trying to manage the Galaxy over MTP, especially Smart Switch, before opening OpenMTP.
2. Establish the USB connection
- Connect the Galaxy with a cable that supports data.
- Unlock the phone.
- If Android asks whether to allow phone-data access, tap Allow.
- If a USB notification appears, select Transferring files.
3. Open the two-pane file view
Launch OpenMTP. One pane represents files on the Mac and the other represents storage exposed by the Galaxy through MTP. Wait for the device pane to populate before beginning a large copy.
4. Copy music from the Mac to the Galaxy
- In the Mac pane, locate the album, playlist folder, or individual tracks you want to send.
- In the device pane, open the destination folder in the Galaxy’s exposed storage.
- Select the files or folders in the Mac pane and use OpenMTP’s copy control to send them to the device pane.
- Keep the phone connected and unlocked while the transfer runs. Wait for the copy operation to finish before disconnecting.
5. Copy music from the Galaxy to the Mac
- In the device pane, browse to the folder containing the recordings or tracks.
- In the Mac pane, choose or create the destination folder for the copied files.
- Select the desired items on the Galaxy and copy them to the Mac pane.
- After the operation completes, open the destination folder on the Mac and check that the expected filenames are present before unplugging the phone.
OpenMTP’s role is file transfer. It does not turn a streaming-service catalog or a protected purchase into an unrestricted file collection; it can copy files that the device exposes and that the operating system permits you to read.

Troubleshoot a Galaxy that the Mac does not recognize
Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a different failure point in the documented MTP connection.
The phone only charges
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable firmly at both ends.
- Try a known data-capable cable; OpenMTP notes that some cables only provide charging.
- Unlock the Galaxy and look for the USB notification.
- Change the USB mode to Transferring files, then reopen OpenMTP.
Android never shows the access prompt
- Unlock the device before reconnecting.
- Unplug the cable, wait briefly, and reconnect with the screen on.
- Watch for the phone-data permission prompt and tap Allow when it appears.
OpenMTP shows a blank or missing device
- Quit Smart Switch and any other application using the phone’s MTP connection. OpenMTP’s Samsung instructions warn that Smart Switch can block other apps from accessing the device.
- Disconnect and reconnect the phone after those applications have closed.
- Confirm the cable carries data and that the phone is set to file transfer rather than charging.
- Reopen OpenMTP after the connection is re-established.
The copy starts but does not complete
- Keep the Galaxy unlocked and connected until OpenMTP reports completion.
- Retry with a smaller folder or a single track to determine whether the problem is tied to one item.
- Check the Mac destination after each attempt so you do not create duplicate copies during repeated retries.
Smart Switch backup does not contain the music you expected
- Reopen Smart Switch and verify that the relevant backup category or item was selected.
- Confirm that the audio files are among the formats Samsung lists, such as MP3, WAV, AAC, M4A, OGG, WMA, or FLAC.
- Consider whether the files are older iTunes purchases with restrictions described by Samsung. That Smart Switch limitation is separate from copying ordinary, user-accessible files over MTP.
Decide where each workflow fits
You are replacing a Galaxy
Create a Smart Switch backup on the Mac, confirm that the backup operation completes, then connect the replacement Galaxy and use Restore. This preserves the backup-and-restore workflow Samsung documents and avoids treating the backup package as a manually managed folder.
You need a handful of albums on the phone
Use OpenMTP. Select the album folders in the Mac pane, choose a destination in the device pane, and copy them directly. This is faster to manage than creating a broader backup when only selected files matter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You are archiving recordings from the phone
Use OpenMTP in the phone-to-Mac direction. Choose a clearly named Mac folder, copy the files, and verify that the expected items appear there before disconnecting.
You want both a safety copy and selective access
Run Smart Switch for the restorable device backup, then use OpenMTP for individual files that you also need to handle directly. Close Smart Switch before launching OpenMTP so the two applications do not compete for MTP access.
Keep the transfer reliable
- Separate backup from file management. Smart Switch produces a backup intended for restoration; OpenMTP provides direct access for selected files. Choosing based on that distinction prevents misplaced expectations.
- Keep the phone awake and unlocked during a copy. The documented direct workflow requires an unlocked device and an approved data-access prompt.
- Use a consistent folder scheme. Organizing by artist, album, or project on the Mac makes it easier to select complete folders in OpenMTP and to identify what was copied.
- Check the destination after completion. Confirm that filenames and the expected number of tracks are present before disconnecting or deleting the originals.
- Do not infer playback support from the extension alone. Samsung’s format list identifies supported music categories, while the actual player on the Galaxy may have its own codec and DRM limitations.
Requirements and limitations at a glance
| Item | What the documented guidance says |
|---|---|
| Mac requirement for Smart Switch | macOS 10.9 or later (Samsung US support guidance). |
| Android requirement for general Smart Switch transfers | Android 4.3 or later. |
| Android requirement for encrypted data | Android 7.0 or later. |
| Default Smart Switch backup path | /Users/[username]/Documents/Samsung/SmartSwitch/backup |
| Music formats Samsung lists | MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, and FLAC. |
| Direct-copy essentials | A data-capable USB cable, an unlocked Galaxy, phone-data permission, and the Transferring files USB mode when prompted. |
| Smart Switch iTunes limitation | Samsung says only music and video files purchased from iTunes after 2009 can be transferred through Smart Switch; older purchases are described as not DRM-free. |
Quick checklist
- Choose Smart Switch for a restorable Galaxy backup; choose OpenMTP for selected files and folders.
- Check the Smart Switch macOS and Android requirements if you are using Samsung’s utility.
- Use a USB cable that carries data, not one that only charges.
- Unlock the Galaxy, tap Allow for phone-data access, and select Transferring files if Android presents that choice.
- Close Smart Switch before using OpenMTP.
- Leave the connection intact until the backup or copy completes, then verify the destination files.
These steps give you two clearly defined paths: Samsung’s supported backup-and-restore process for whole-device moves, and OpenMTP’s direct MTP copy process for hands-on music-file transfers.
