Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Review: Is the 2026 Remake Worth Playing?

Yes, if you have already finished Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter or are happy to play it first. The 2026 remake of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC is a direct sequel. Its story, character payoffs, and many of its best moments depend on the first game, and reviewers who covered it agree that it works best as the next step in the Liberl story rather than as a standalone entry. Critics praised its narrative, combat depth, and quality-of-life updates. The main caution is tone: its melodramatic anime style may not suit everyone.

Do you need to play Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter first?

Yes. This is the one point where the sources are unanimous. TechRadar’s review calls the remake a direct sequel and recommends playing the first chapter beforehand. It notes that the game includes a recap option, but says many story elements will not make sense without the earlier game. PC Gamer similarly describes the remake as building on the first chapter’s setting, characters, and quests, and notes save carryover and continued character banter between the party members.

If you are coming to the series fresh, plan on finishing the first chapter before starting this one. Skipping it will cost you the emotional weight of several character arcs, and the recap will not fully replace the experience.

Story: where Estelle’s journey picks up

The publisher’s official synopsis places Estelle Bright as a newly certified senior bracer. The story begins after Joshua vanishes, and Estelle sets out to learn what happened to him and what Ouroboros is planning. The official site describes it as Estelle embarking on “a new chapter of her story” to answer those questions. Beyond this premise, the reviews we looked at avoid major plot details, and this article does the same.

The narrative is the most consistently praised element across coverage. TechRadar’s reviewer highlighted the writing as a major strength, and PC Gamer emphasised how the remake extends the setting and cast the first chapter established. Neither review frames the story as a self-contained adventure, so expect it to ask for your investment in the characters from the start.

Combat, pacing, and side content

The combat system is the second area reviewers singled out after the story. Its design includes tactical turn-based battles, quick action encounters, and several features that reward planning. Nintendo’s official product copy also highlights fishing and poker minigames, cooking with companions, and familiar characters returning as playable party members.

Turn-based tactical combat

TechRadar’s reviewer describes tactical considerations including Arts, Orbments, turn order, and turn bonuses. Treat these as the core of the fights: the decisions you make in each turn matter more than raw stats. Expect a deliberate pace rather than fast reactions.

Quick action encounters

Alongside the turn-based system, the reviewer notes quick action encounters. They break up the standard flow of battles and add a different kind of challenge. The review presents these as part of the design, not as a separate mode.

Side activities

Fishing, poker, and cooking with companions give you time away from the main story. The publisher presents them as features of the game. The reviews we consulted do not evaluate how deep these minigames go, so consider them a bonus rather than a central reason to buy.

Presentation and PS5 performance

The publisher describes the remake as updating its visuals, reorchestrating its music, and adding quality-of-life improvements, with English and Japanese voice acting. TechRadar’s reviewer played the PS5 version and reports that it runs at 60fps by default, with a performance mode that targets 120fps on compatible displays. The reviewer also reports a choice among standard, arranged, and original background music.

These performance and audio details come from one reviewer’s PS5 playthrough. They are not independent benchmarks, and the review does not state whether the other platforms match them. Check the current build and platform notes before assuming the same results on Switch, Switch 2, or Steam.

Alpine Trails | Strategic Tile Placement Board Game for Families
  • Easy to Learn: Alpine Trails is simple to learn and play, but surprisingly puzzling and strategic. You'll need to master several different strategies as you try to accomplish your unique personal objective each time you play this tile placement game.
  • Puzzling and Strategic: Alpine Trails features several well-balanced layers of scoring. Which strategy you choose will depend on the tiles you draw and the personal objective you have each game. Every tile you draw will have multiple ways to add to your score and will require planning and pivoting with every turn.
  • Includes 132 Tiles: Alpine Trails is a path building game for up to 5 players in which each player will build their own trail map. There are no size or shape constraints to each player's map, resulting in beautiful and unique creations each time you play.
  • Quality Wood Components: Alpine Trails includes 57 fully painted wood tokens, including 25 tents, 12 sign posts, 5 moose, 5 wolves, 5 bears and 5 mountain goats.

The same reviewer found the melodramatic anime style potentially divisive, while still praising the overall presentation and quality-of-life work. This is a matter of taste, and the sources treat it that way.

Accessibility and language options

TechRadar’s PS5 review reports the following settings:

  • Subtitles in English, German, French, or Spanish.
  • English or Japanese voice acting.
  • Adjustable camera behaviour, speed, and distance.
  • Multiple difficulty options, including Very Easy.
  • No colorblind mode, according to the same review.

Because these observations come from a PS5 review, verify them against the version you plan to buy if a specific setting matters to you.

Verdict: who should play it

The remake is a strong continuation for players who already know the Liberl story and want its next chapter. Its narrative, character payoffs, tactical combat, and quality-of-life updates are the reasons critics recommend it. It is a poor first step into the series, because the story leans heavily on what came before. Players who find anime melodrama off-putting should be prepared for it to play a large role.

  • Good fit: returning fans of the first chapter, players who enjoy turn-based tactics, and anyone wanting a long, character-driven RPG.
  • Less suited: newcomers who have not played the first chapter, players who dislike melodramatic anime writing, and anyone looking for a fast-paced action game.
