Traditional Testing vs. AI Testing: Key Differences

AI testing adds data and model evaluation to conventional software checks. Learn how acceptance criteria, repeatability, lifecycle, and risk change.

Traditional testing checks whether software meets defined requirements; testing an AI-based system also evaluates whether its data-driven outputs are acceptable across relevant users, inputs, conditions, and risks. The two approaches are complementary: conventional functional, integration, security, and regression checks still matter, while AI systems need explicit criteria for data quality, variable outputs, and performance changes.

“AI testing” can also mean using generative AI to help test ordinary software. That is a different subject from testing an AI system. ISTQB distinguishes testing AI-based systems through its CT-AI certification from applying generative AI in the testing process through CT-GenAI. ISTQB CT-AI and CT-GenAI address those separate meanings.

How the two kinds of testing differ

Traditional testing often starts with specified rules and requirements, then checks selected inputs against expected behavior. AI testing retains those checks where they apply, but adds evaluation of data and model behavior. For a predictive or generative system, there may be several acceptable outputs rather than one exact answer, making it necessary to define how acceptable performance will be judged.

Testing dimension Traditional software testing Testing AI-based systems
Expected behavior Requirements and rules can often specify a particular result for an input. Several outputs may be acceptable. Teams need measurable acceptance criteria or a defined evaluation procedure; ISO identifies difficulty specifying expected results as the test-oracle problem. ISO/IEC TR 29119-11:2020
Inputs Test cases exercise requirements, code paths, boundaries, and integrations. Input data, its quality, and its relevance to intended use are part of the test surface alongside code and system behavior. ISTQB CT-AI v2.0 includes input-data testing. ISTQB CT-AI
Assessing outputs Expected values or specified behavior can often support exact pass/fail assertions. Use metrics and application-specific judgments suited to the task. A generative system should be evaluated against task and risk criteria, not assumed to have one canonical output. NIST notes that evaluation methods vary by application. NIST TEVV-Athlon
Repeatability With controlled conditions, rerunning a deterministic test is generally expected to reproduce the result. Some systems are non-deterministic, or their behavior changes with model or data versions. Teams must account for that variability and monitor changes. ISO/IEC TR 29119-11:2020
Lifecycle Unit, integration, system, acceptance, performance, security, and regression testing remain useful. Those checks remain relevant, with additional coverage for data, models, and machine-learning development activities. ISTQB CT-AI
Risk Established risk-based testing approaches help select quality and security checks. Evaluation objectives and scenarios should reflect intended use and possible negative impacts. NIST’s draft TEVV-Athlon framework emphasizes tailoring assessments to organizational goals and application context. NIST TEVV-Athlon

This is an added layer, not a replacement methodology. ISO/IEC TS 42119-2:2025 explains how established ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 software-testing concepts apply to AI systems, with AI-specific guidance and risk-based selection of practices. Read the ISO overview.

How to adapt a test strategy for an AI system

1. Define acceptable behavior before choosing a score

Describe the task, intended users, operating conditions, acceptable outcomes, and failures that are unacceptable. The test-oracle problem is often an evaluation-design issue, not simply a tooling gap. A single aggregate score may hide failures that matter to a particular user group or scenario.

2. Test the data as well as the software

Check whether input data and test scenarios are relevant to intended use, and include cases that expose quality or coverage problems. ISTQB’s CT-AI v2.0 lifecycle explicitly covers input-data testing, model testing, and machine-learning development testing.

3. Use evaluation lenses suited to the consequences

Measure task performance and, where relevant to the application’s risk, assess safety, bias, robustness, reliability, or other potential impacts. No universal metric or identical test suite is established for every AI application; methods and requirements depend on the use case. NIST TEVV-Athlon

4. Make changes traceable

Record the model, data, configuration, and test-set versions needed to interpret evaluation results. Reassess after material changes, and consider whether input conditions or performance have shifted. ISO describes concept drift as changes in input-data statistical properties that can reduce model performance. ISO/IEC TS 42119-2:2025

NIST evaluation resources and draft status

NIST TEVV-Athlon is an initial public draft framework for tailoring testing, evaluation, verification, and validation assessments to AI-system goals and contexts. NIST says its scope includes statistical machine learning, large language models, multimodal models, and agentic systems. As of October 4, 2026, the public comment period is scheduled to close October 6, 2026, so the framework should be treated as a draft, not settled final guidance. NIST TEVV-Athlon.

Where website screenshots fit into QA

Visual checks can help test an AI-enabled website’s interface, but a screenshot does not establish that a model’s outputs are correct, safe, or fair. It is one way to inspect rendered pages alongside the data, model, functional, and risk evaluation described above. For repeatable page captures, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: it removes supported consent banners and other overlays before capture, and bills only clean shots.
