Professional teams generally do not choose between scouting and analytics. In the documented Buffalo, Seattle, Brentford and Minnesota examples, models help measure impact and prioritize questions, while scouts supply observation, context and judgment—especially when a player is new or the sample is small. The important work happens when the two sources are compared, disagreements are investigated and the evaluation is updated.
Two evidence systems, two kinds of uncertainty
Traditional scouting and sports analytics answer different questions. A scout watches what a player does, how the action develops and whether it is likely to transfer to a new role, league or level. An analyst works with structured observations—events, tracking data, video tags, physical measures or model outputs—to estimate impact, find patterns and compare large groups more consistently.

| Approach | Especially useful for | Typical blind spots | Best question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scouting | Technique, habits, decision-making, role fit, development, personality and situational context | Memory and observer bias, limited viewing time, difficulty comparing large populations consistently | What is the player doing, why is it happening and how might it translate? |
| Analytics | Measuring impact, ranking or filtering player pools, identifying trends and testing whether an impression appears repeatedly | Small or uneven samples, metrics that omit context, model assumptions and difficulty explaining an unfamiliar result | What happened, how often, in what situations and relative to which baseline? |
Neither source is automatically the more objective one. A model can be precise about the wrong question, while a detailed observation can be insightful but hard to generalize. Combining them is a way to reduce those different forms of uncertainty, not a guarantee that every decision will be correct.

Analytics can direct attention. A club evaluating hundreds of prospects cannot watch every player with equal depth, so measured impact or a projection can identify which cases deserve more time. Data can also expose a pattern that is easy to miss in occasional viewing—for example, a change in off-puck activity, shot quality or how often a player creates an advantage.

Scouting supplies the explanation. A metric may move because a player changed roles, faced stronger opponents, received unusual minutes, played through an injury or benefited from teammates. Film and conversations can test those possibilities. Scouts can also evaluate players for whom the data is immature: a teenager, a recent arrival from another league or an athlete whose role produces few recorded events.
The combination is most useful when each side is expected to challenge the other. Buffalo Sabres director of analytics Jason Nightingale described the interaction as asking how a player is producing a result and whether that method will translate to the next level. Director of scouting Jeremiah Crowe summarized the relationship this way: “We rely on our scouts to make sense of data and vice-versa.”
A documented collaboration loop
The Buffalo Sabres’ account of their 2020 NHL draft process provides a concrete example. It was published on October 2, 2020, during a disrupted pandemic-era draft cycle, so it should be read as one organization’s documented method rather than a universal current protocol.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use information to set assignments. Scouting assignments were informed by analytics and other collected information. The purpose was not to outsource evaluation to a model, but to decide where focused observation could add value.
- Complete a minimum viewing workload. Scouts were expected to review a required number of games or videos before drawing a conclusion. A repeatable viewing requirement helps prevent one memorable shift or match from dominating the report.
- Hold a joint review. Scouting and analytics leaders discussed observations, projections and measures of game control or offensive impact. Each side had to make its evidence understandable to the other.
- Investigate the disagreement. Scouts conducted another review to determine why the initial findings did or did not match. The follow-up was intended to explain the “why” behind a result and provide checks and balances.
- Update the evaluation. The final view incorporated the explanation, not merely a vote between a human opinion and a number. A disagreement that remains unexplained should be recorded as uncertainty rather than hidden.
This loop works because it turns analytics into a set of questions and scouting into a test of those questions. It also recognizes that a second look can correct errors on either side.
What scouting contributes beyond a stat line
Modern scouting is not simply an unaided eye test. Seattle’s account of its hockey scouting process, published in 2022, describes repeated evaluations throughout a season and conversations with coaches, trainers and agents. At the NHL Scouting Combine, specialists such as a psychologist may add information about personality, habits and development.
Those inputs can clarify how a player works, responds to coaching and fits a proposed role. They are not automatic predictors. The Seattle account specifically cautions against assuming that a trait such as leadership necessarily predicts a particular playing style. A scout’s report is strongest when it identifies observable behavior and the conditions under which it appears, rather than attaching a broad label.

Small samples and new environments
Seattle R&D director Namita Nandakumar gives a practical reason to retain scouting: a player may have recently entered the NHL or AHL before enough performance data exists to support a stable conclusion. A scout who has watched that transition can describe how the player is fitting in, what has improved and where the new level is exposing weaknesses.

The same issue appears when a player changes sport, league, position or tactical role. Historical data may describe the old environment accurately while offering little evidence about the new one. Direct observation supplies an early signal, although it should remain provisional until more comparable performances accumulate.
What analytics contributes to evaluation
Analytics gives a front office a common measurement language. Depending on the sport and available systems, teams can quantify on-field or on-ice impact, organize a large candidate pool, compare players with similar roles and examine whether a pattern persists across games. Tracking data can add positional and movement context that ordinary box scores cannot provide.
Seattle uses tracking information to investigate differences between a metric and a scout’s impression. That is different from treating tracking output as a final verdict. Nandakumar argues that a number should be translated into a clear action. If it offers no immediate decision, monitoring the trend over time may be more useful than passing along an isolated figure without context.
Analytics as a prioritization tool
A model can help decide which players need a deeper review, which assumptions deserve testing and which apparent successes may be driven by unusual circumstances. It can also create a record of why a player was considered, making later evaluation less dependent on memory. These benefits depend on data quality, comparable samples and a clear definition of the outcome being modeled.
When the evidence conflicts
A mismatch is a diagnostic signal, not a contest with an automatic winner. The first task is to identify what each source actually measured and whether the observations cover the same period, role and competition level.

| Pattern | Questions for the joint review | Reasonable next action |
|---|---|---|
| Strong model result, lukewarm scouting report | Is the metric rewarding a narrow role? Were the viewed games representative? Is the player benefiting from teammates or tactics that will not exist on the target team? | Review more comparable games, inspect the underlying events and test the expected role rather than discarding either source. |
| Weak model result, strong film impression | Is the sample too short? Does the player create value that the metric does not capture? Has the player recently changed leagues, positions or responsibilities? | Label the estimate as uncertain, collect more observations and look for a better-matched measure. |
| Positive performance, concern about habits or fit | Are the concerns repeated and observable? Do coaches, trainers or agents describe the same behavior? Would the proposed environment change it? | Document the specific behavior, seek corroborating conversations and assess whether coaching can address it. |
| Conflicting views among scouts | Are evaluators watching different games or emphasizing different roles? Is one judgment based on a rare event? | Compare the evidence directly, invite multiple angles and separate agreement about facts from disagreement about projection. |
The Sabres’ second-review step and Seattle’s use of tracking to add context point to the same discipline: explain the discrepancy before changing the grade. A team can ultimately choose the scout’s projection or the model’s estimate, but it should be able to state why.
The balance changes with the decision
There is no fixed percentage for scouting versus analytics. The appropriate mix depends on the sport, organization, player, data quality and time horizon.
| Decision context | Why analytics may carry more weight | Why scouting may carry more weight |
|---|---|---|
| Established professional with a large comparable sample | Repeated observations support stable comparisons and role-specific estimates. | Scouting still tests tactical fit, health information and how the player will be used. |
| Young prospect or recent league entrant | Early indicators can organize a wide pool and identify trends to monitor. | Limited history makes direct observation, development context and projection especially important. |
| Trade or signing for an immediate role | Models can estimate expected contribution and value relative to alternatives. | Scouts assess translation to the team’s system, staff and competition level. |
| Long-term development decision | Tracking over time can show whether targeted skills are improving. | Coaches and scouts can evaluate learning, habits, resilience and response to instruction. |
| Metric and film disagree | Underlying event data can reveal whether the impression is repeatable. | Observation can expose missing context or a role the metric does not represent. |
Brentford owner Matthew Benham told BBC Sport in March 2026 that the club uses an open exchange between data models and traditional scouting. He said some signings are more scouting-based and others more model-based, and that young players can be difficult to assess with models when little data is available. That is a description of Brentford’s balance, not proof that the same weighting works for every club.

How the approach appears in different sports
Hockey: scouting around the model
The Seattle Kraken examples show two complementary layers. The 2022 scouting account emphasizes repeated viewings and conversations with people around the player. The June 27, 2026 front-office interview explains how the analytics group uses tracking data to understand stylistic trends and investigate a difference between a metric and a scout’s view. Together, the accounts show why a recent arrival or small sample may need more observation before a model can be trusted as a stable guide.
Football: different professional routes to one decision
A March 3, 2023 Minnesota Vikings profile describes player-personnel executive Ryan Grigson and football-operations executive Demitrius Washington bringing different backgrounds into the same process. Washington said colleagues might reach the same or different decisions by different routes and help one another identify blind spots. The profile illustrates how organizational design can combine expertise without claiming that one route consistently produces better selections.
Baseball: analytics across the operation
A July 19, 2018 MLB.com report on the Miami Marlins described analytics input in amateur, international and professional scouting, trades, player development, advanced scouting, shifts and game planning. It also mentioned TrackMan and high-definition video in the club’s evaluation work. These details show how broad an analytics function can become, but they describe the Marlins’ 2018 operation and do not establish its current systems or a guaranteed competitive advantage.

Hockey drafting: a historical process example
The Sabres’ 2020 draft account is useful because it specifies assignments, minimum viewings, joint meetings and a second investigation. Its value is procedural: it shows how a club attempted to make human and quantitative evidence interact during one draft cycle. It does not measure the quality of the resulting selections.

The following framework turns the documented practices into a repeatable decision process. It is a planning model, not a claim that every team follows these exact steps.
- Define the decision. State whether the objective is immediate contribution, trade value, development, roster fit or a specific tactical role. A model cannot be judged until the target is explicit.
- Check data suitability. Record league, season, minutes, role, competition level and sample size. Mark missing tracking, inconsistent event definitions and any major context change.
- Create a first-pass shortlist. Use relevant impact measures and projections to reduce the pool, while preserving a route for scouts to nominate players whose value may be under-measured.
- Assign targeted observation. Tell scouts which questions need answers: defensive positioning, decision speed, response to pressure, off-ball work, role flexibility or another concrete behavior. Set a minimum number of viewings when a decision warrants it.
- Hold a structured meeting. Put the metric, video examples, role description and uncertainty on the same agenda. Ask each specialist to distinguish observed facts from projections.
- Investigate mismatches. Rewatch representative games, inspect the events behind the metric and consult coaches, trainers or other specialists when the issue concerns health, habits or development.
- Record confidence and conditions. State what would make the evaluation change: more games, a different role, better tracking or evidence from a higher level of competition.
- Review the decision later. Compare the original assumptions with what actually happened, without treating one outcome as proof that the original process was right or wrong. The goal is to improve the questions and calibration used next time.
Common failure modes
Treating a model as an answer
A ranking is not a role description. If decision-makers cannot explain what action a metric supports, they should ask for context or monitor the trend rather than presenting the number as self-explanatory.
Treating scouting as a verdict
Confidence, reputation or a memorable performance can overshadow contradictory evidence. Requiring specific examples, repeated viewings and peer discussion makes a report more testable.
Mixing unlike samples
Comparing a full-season professional to a short run in a different league can create false precision. Every table, report and meeting should identify the population and conditions behind a figure.

Confusing character labels with behavior
Terms such as leadership or competitiveness are too broad to project on their own. The Seattle scouting account’s caution is useful: describe the behavior, the setting in which it appeared and its relevance to the intended role.

Ignoring translation risk
Production in one tactical system may not survive a change in teammates, coaching, competition or responsibility. The evaluation should specify what is expected to transfer and what still needs evidence.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
Team accounts and interviews are valuable for describing real workflows, but they do not establish causal effectiveness. No named statistic in the cited material measures how widely teams combine scouting and analytics or proves that a blended method produces better player-selection results. The 2018 Marlins figures are season-specific and do not answer that comparison.
The dates also matter. The Marlins report is historical, from 2018; the Sabres draft account is from 2020; the Vikings profile is from 2023; Seattle’s scouting article is from 2022; and the newer Seattle and Brentford descriptions were published in 2026. These sources document particular organizations at particular times. Systems, staffing and weighting can change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A careful reader should therefore treat blended evaluation as a documented operating philosophy with plausible advantages, not as a universally validated formula. The strongest claim supported by these examples is narrower: teams can make better-informed conversations by pairing measured patterns with direct observation, especially when they investigate why the evidence differs.
A checklist for evaluating a team’s process
- Is the decision and time horizon explicit?
- Does the data match the player’s league, role and sample size?
- Can scouts explain what they observed with specific examples?
- Can analysts explain what the metric measures and what it leaves out?
- Are young or recently transferred players flagged as high-uncertainty cases?
- Is there a scheduled review when film and model output disagree?
- Do coaches, trainers or other specialists contribute relevant context?
- Does the final report state assumptions, confidence and conditions that would change the view?

The Vikings profile notes that Demitrius Washington read Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game and became interested in predictive analysis for player evaluation. The book is useful historical context for the rise of quantitative thinking, but it is not a direct manual for current team workflows. The practical lesson from the more recent team accounts is less about choosing a side than about building a disciplined exchange between measurement and observation.
