Traditional and infrared saunas are not the same heat experience. A traditional sauna heats the cabin air, which then warms your body. An infrared sauna uses radiant infrared energy to heat the body more directly, so the surrounding air is usually cooler. Neither format has been proven universally healthier for long-term outcomes. The practical choice depends on the heat you tolerate, whether you want humidity, the cabin and electrical setup available in your home, and your individual health risks.
Lower air temperature in an infrared cabin can make it feel easier to enter, but it does not eliminate heat strain. A 45-minute far-infrared exposure at 65°C produced a substantial rise in core temperature and heart rate in a small 2026 study. Treat both formats as significant heat exposure, not as a substitute for exercise or medical treatment.

What is the difference between a traditional sauna and an infrared sauna?
The key difference is how heat is transferred.
- Traditional sauna: A stove or heater warms the air inside the room. Your skin and body are warmed by that hot air, with additional radiant heat from the heater and stones.
- Infrared sauna: Infrared emitters radiate energy toward the body. The cabin air is not heated to the same degree before your body warms.
Mayo Clinic describes the distinction this way: “A regular sauna uses heat to warm the air, which in turn warms your body. An infrared sauna heats your body directly without warming the air around you.” The difference affects temperature, humidity, perceived intensity, installation and the way studies should be interpreted; it does not by itself prove that one type produces better long-term health outcomes.

Traditional sauna heat
In a traditional cabin, the heater raises the temperature of the room. A stone-filled electric or wood-burning heater can also provide a strong radiant component. Where the design permits it, water poured over heated stones adds a burst of humidity and changes how the heat feels on the skin. The air temperature remains the main environmental load, and the hottest air collects near the ceiling, so bench height changes the experience.

Infrared heat
Infrared cabins use panels, lamps or other emitters aimed at the occupant. ICNIRP describes two common far-infrared arrangements: large, lower-temperature wall heaters with surfaces around 50–70°C and relatively uniform, low skin irradiance; and ceramic or metallic rods with surfaces around 300–400°C and reflectors that produce less uniform irradiation. Those are heater-surface temperatures, not the temperature of the air you breathe.
Because the body receives radiant energy directly, an infrared session can produce sweating and a faster pulse without the room reaching a traditional sauna’s air temperature. The result is a different sensation, not an absence of thermal stress.
Temperature, humidity and perceived heat
ICNIRP gives broad typical cabin-air ranges of about 40°C for the two infrared cabin designs it discusses and 85–90°C for traditional saunas. These are general ranges, not specifications for every model, program or session. A unit may operate outside them, and a thermometer reading does not describe radiant intensity, humidity or the temperature at each bench.
| Characteristic | Traditional sauna | Infrared sauna |
|---|---|---|
| Primary heat transfer | Hot air warms the body, with additional radiant heat from the heater and stones | Radiant infrared energy warms the body more directly |
| Typical cabin air cited by ICNIRP | About 85–90°C | About 40°C for the infrared designs described |
| Humidity | Can be increased with water on stones when the heater and manufacturer allow it | Usually a dry experience because radiant panels do not generate steam |
| Perceived heat | Hotter air and a larger room-wide heat load; bench position matters | Cooler air but noticeable radiant warmth on the skin; emitter placement matters |
| What the air temperature tells you | It is a major part of the thermal load, but not the whole experience | It does not capture radiant exposure or the body’s resulting heat strain |
People who dislike the sensation of breathing very hot air often find infrared more tolerable. People who enjoy an enveloping, humid heat or want to splash water on stones generally prefer a traditional cabin. “Cooler” should be read as a description of room air, not a safety guarantee.
Does infrared sauna heat the body more effectively?
There is no single answer because “effective” can mean different things: raising skin temperature, raising core temperature, provoking sweating, increasing heart rate or producing a long-term clinical benefit. The available studies used different cabins, temperatures, durations and measurements, so their results cannot be turned into a universal ranking.
Far-infrared exposure at 65°C
Jenkins and colleagues reported in Experimental Physiology in 2026 on one 45-minute far-infrared exposure at 65°C in 12 healthy adults, six of them women. Rectal temperature increased by an average of 1.4°C (95% confidence interval 0.9–1.8°C). Mean heart rate rose from 74 ± 15 to 153 ± 20 beats per minute, and sweat rate was 1.4 ± 0.5 litres per hour.

This was a small, single-session experiment at an ambient temperature substantially higher than the roughly 40°C infrared-cabin range cited by ICNIRP. It demonstrates that a far-infrared session can impose a large thermal load under those conditions; it does not describe every home cabin or establish a health benefit. The authors concluded that the ability of far-infrared sauna to raise core temperature is governed by the thermal load imposed.

Traditional versus far-infrared in a common-use comparison
A separate acute study compared hot-water immersion, traditional sauna and far-infrared sauna as they are commonly used in young, healthy adults. Hot-water immersion produced the strongest thermoregulatory, cardiovascular and immune responses in that protocol. Far-infrared sauna had the least effect on core temperature and related responses. Heart rate increased by 34 beats per minute with traditional sauna and 26 beats per minute with far-infrared sauna; the direct difference between the two sauna conditions was not statistically significant (P = 0.09).
These findings describe one protocol, not a permanent ranking of equipment. Differences in air temperature, radiant output, duration, posture, hydration and acclimation can change the result.
Infrared sauna compared with rest and cycling
Hussain and colleagues conducted a randomized crossover trial in 2022 with 10 healthy women whose mean age was 36 ± 9 years. Each participant completed 45 minutes of rest, infrared sauna and indoor cycling. Tympanic temperature during infrared sauna was 1.05°C higher than during control, but the investigators found no significant differences in measured non-invasive blood pressure, arterial stiffness or heart-rate variability.
The authors characterized the short-term response as thermoregulatory rather than an exercise-mimetic cardiorespiratory or cardiovascular response. A sauna therefore should not be presented as a replacement for aerobic or resistance training.
What is known about long-term health benefits?
The evidence does not establish that traditional or infrared sauna is universally healthier, extends life more, or treats a disease. Mayo Clinic’s September 13, 2024 review notes studies of infrared sauna in areas including high blood pressure, heart failure, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, headache, type 2 diabetes and arthritis. It also says larger and more precise studies are needed, and some of the studies used regular saunas rather than infrared cabins.

That distinction matters. An acute increase in sweating, pulse or temperature is a physiological response, not proof of improved disease outcomes. The reviewed evidence does not show that sauna sessions detoxify the body, replace exercise, prevent illness or provide a guaranteed treatment. ICNIRP likewise states that supportive scientific evidence for alleged health benefits is limited.
When evaluating a health claim, ask four questions:
- Was the study performed in the same type of sauna you plan to use?
- Was the outcome a short-term measurement or a meaningful clinical endpoint?
- How many participants were studied, and were they healthy volunteers or people with the condition?
- Did the study compare a sauna with ordinary care, exercise, another sauna type or no heat at all?
Are infrared saunas safer because they run cooler?
Not automatically. Cooler cabin air may improve comfort and reduce the sensation of breathing hot air, but radiant energy can still raise skin and core temperature, accelerate heart rate and cause dehydration. The 65°C far-infrared experiment illustrates why air temperature alone is an incomplete safety measure.

People who should get medical advice first
ICNIRP advises people at risk of hyperthermia, including people with cardiovascular disease, to seek medical advice before using an infrared warming cabin. Anyone with a condition or medication that affects sweating, circulation, blood pressure, temperature regulation or alertness should ask a clinician for individualized guidance rather than relying on a generic sauna rule.
Medication, alcohol and reduced pain sensation
ICNIRP warns that medication, recreational drugs or alcohol may diminish pain sensation. That can delay recognition of overheating or a developing skin injury. Do not use intoxication as a way to tolerate a hotter or longer session, and follow a clinician’s advice about medicines that alter fluid balance or cardiovascular response.
Skin effects and when to stop
Prolonged infrared-C heating can cause persistent redness. Repeated exposure may lead to pigment changes or skin damage known as erythema ab igne. Stop exposure and seek medical advice if redness lasts more than a day or if persistent color changes develop. Pain, burning, blistering or an unusual rash also warrants prompt medical attention.

Recent ultraviolet exposure
As a precaution, ICNIRP recommends avoiding warming cabins and infrared lamps within 24 hours of intensive sun exposure or high-intensity ultraviolet exposure. This is separate from ordinary day-to-day sunlight and is intended to reduce cumulative skin stress.

Leave immediately if you feel faint, confused, unusually weak, nauseated, short of breath or unwell. Cool down, replace fluids as appropriate and obtain urgent medical help for collapse, chest pain, severe breathing difficulty or symptoms that do not resolve promptly. Never use a sauna as a test of endurance.
Which sauna is better for your preferences?
| If your priority is… | More likely to fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hot air and the option of steam-like bursts | Traditional sauna | The room itself is heated, and compatible stone heaters can accept water |
| A lower room temperature | Infrared sauna | Typical infrared cabin air is much cooler than the traditional range cited by ICNIRP |
| Strong, room-wide heat | Traditional sauna | Air temperature and radiant heater output combine throughout the cabin |
| Radiant warmth directed at the body | Infrared sauna | Panels or emitters deliver infrared energy without first heating all the air |
| Flexible heat intensity by bench height | Traditional sauna | Higher benches generally sit in hotter air |
| Dry air and no steam routine | Infrared sauna | Radiant panels normally do not create steam |
| Established long-term certainty | Neither has a proven universal advantage | Long-term comparative clinical evidence remains limited |
Use tolerance as a selection criterion, not as evidence of medical superiority. Someone who leaves a traditional sauna after a few minutes may use an infrared cabin more consistently, while someone who finds radiant panels uncomfortable may prefer the even room heat of a traditional design. Consistency and safe use matter more than a label.
Home installation, space and cost factors
No current product prices were established for this comparison, and sauna costs vary widely by cabin size, materials, heater type, electrical work, ventilation, delivery and installation. A realistic budget must include more than the advertised cabin.
Traditional sauna requirements
- Room for the cabin, heater, stones, guard and safe clearances specified by the manufacturer.
- An appropriate power supply for an electric heater, or a compliant flue, hearth and ventilation arrangement for a wood-burning heater.
- Moisture-resistant construction and a floor that can tolerate heat, humidity and occasional water.
- Ventilation designed for the specific heater and room, rather than improvised gaps that compromise safety.
Infrared sauna requirements
- Enough floor area and ceiling clearance for the cabin and its electrical connection.
- A circuit that matches the unit’s voltage, amperage and plug requirements; have uncertain wiring assessed by a qualified electrician.
- Clearances around heaters and controls, even when the cabin air feels relatively cool.
- A dry, level location protected from leaks and excessive ambient humidity unless the manufacturer explicitly permits otherwise.
Questions to verify before purchase
- What are the external dimensions, internal seating dimensions and assembled weight?
- What electrical circuit, plug, breaker and cable length are required?
- Does the unit require professional installation or special ventilation?
- Which heater surfaces can be touched, and how are emitters guarded?
- What cleaning products and maintenance schedule are allowed?
- What warranty, delivery, return and service terms apply in your country?
Do not infer those details from a generic category name. “Infrared sauna” can describe cabins with very different emitter temperatures and irradiation patterns, while “traditional sauna” can mean an electric or wood-heated room with different building requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA cautious way to use either type
- Read the manual first. Confirm the permitted session length, temperature controls, ventilation, cleaning method and electrical requirements.
- Start below the maximum setting. Let your body’s response guide progression rather than chasing a target temperature or sweat volume.
- Arrive normally hydrated. Avoid alcohol and any situation in which medication or illness makes heat effects difficult to recognize.
- Use a reliable timer. Do not extend a session because the cabin feels comfortable at first.
- Monitor how you feel. Dizziness, nausea, confusion, unusual weakness, breathing difficulty or feeling faint are reasons to leave.
- Cool down gradually. Replace fluids and allow your heart rate and temperature to settle before driving or doing strenuous activity.
- Record problems. Persistent skin redness, color changes or recurring symptoms should be discussed with a clinician before another session.
These steps do not create a universally safe protocol. Your clinician and the manufacturer’s instructions take priority, particularly if you have cardiovascular disease, impaired temperature regulation or a condition treated with medication that affects hydration or circulation.

Common misconceptions
“More sweating means more detoxification.”
Sweating shows that your body is trying to dissipate heat. It does not demonstrate removal of unspecified toxins, and sweat volume is not a validated measure of health benefit.
“Infrared is gentle because the air is cooler.”
Radiant exposure can still impose substantial thermal stress. Heater output, distance, session duration and the body’s ability to lose heat all matter.
“A sauna gives the same cardiovascular training as exercise.”
The 2022 crossover trial found infrared sauna raised tympanic temperature but did not show significant changes in several cardiovascular measures, and its authors did not describe the session as exercise replacement. Heat and exercise are different stresses.
“Traditional sauna is automatically stronger and therefore better.”
Traditional cabins usually create a hotter air environment, but the head-to-head study found the traditional-versus-far-infrared heart-rate difference was not statistically significant in its protocol. Stronger sensation is not proof of superior long-term health effects.
“Any infrared cabin has the same exposure.”
Wall heaters operating around 50–70°C and rod systems with surfaces around 300–400°C can produce different irradiation patterns. Cabin air temperature alone cannot identify the thermal load.
Bottom line for choosing between them
Choose a traditional sauna if you want hot air, adjustable humidity and the classic stone-heater experience and can meet the room, ventilation and electrical or flue requirements. Choose an infrared sauna if you prefer a cooler cabin with direct radiant warmth and a dry environment, provided you understand that cooler air does not remove heat-related risks.
For health decisions, neither format has a demonstrated universal advantage. The strongest evidence supports the mechanism difference, broad temperature ranges, measurable short-term heat responses and the need for precautions. It does not prove disease treatment, detoxification, exercise replacement or a superior long-term outcome for one sauna type.
