TradingView SuperTrend Backtest: What “6 Years of Ticks” Can—and Can’t—Tell You

A TradingView SuperTrend strategy report can show how a script would have performed under simulated conditions, but the title “6 Years of Ticks” is not enough to verify what was tested or how well it did. The symbol, dates, timeframe, code, execution settings, and report are not provided, so no result—or claim that the test used six years of raw tick records—can be confirmed.

What the TradingView backtest actually represents

TradingView Pine Script strategies simulate orders using a broker emulator and display hypothetical performance in a Strategy Report. That report is not a record of trades executed in a live account. TradingView explains the strategy workflow in its Pine Script strategies documentation.

Consequently, the wording “6 Years of Ticks” should be treated as a description to check against the test configuration, not as a result or proof of data quality. Without the report and script, it is not possible to say whether the strategy was profitable, what trades it made, or whether its assumptions resemble real execution.

Does “six years of ticks” mean six years of raw tick data?

Not necessarily. TradingView documents historical intrabar execution and mechanisms that can use lower-timeframe data or broker-emulator assumptions. Those features do not, on their own, establish that a particular backtest processed six years of raw tick records. The distinction is described in TradingView’s broker emulator documentation.

To substantiate a claim about tick data, the test would need to identify the symbol and data feed, date range, chart timeframe, and the specific execution settings used. The word “ticks” alone does not provide that information.

How to check the historical period

The amount of usable history depends on the selected symbol and the data available for it. TradingView’s Deep Backtesting feature can run over all available historical data for a selected symbol; that does not guarantee that every symbol has six years of history. Deep Backtesting results can also differ from results in regular chart mode. See TradingView’s documentation on historical data limitations and Deep Backtesting. The documentation identifies Deep Backtesting as available on Premium and higher plans; check TradingView’s current plan details for availability.

To verify a six-year claim, compare the report’s actual start and end dates with the selected symbol’s available history. A chart’s displayed range, a strategy’s tested range, and a claim about tick-level input are separate facts and should not be conflated.

How to judge a SuperTrend report

Return alone is a poor basis for judging a strategy. TradingView’s Strategy Report includes several measures that help put performance in context, including total P&L, maximum drawdown, percentage of profitable trades, profit factor, and a buy-and-hold comparison. The available report fields are described in TradingView’s Strategy Tester documentation.

  • Total P&L: the simulated gain or loss shown for the test; interpret it alongside the costs and assumptions applied.
  • Maximum drawdown: the largest reported decline from a peak, useful for understanding the path and risk behind a return.
  • Profitable-trade percentage: the share of trades that closed profitably; it does not show the size of wins versus losses.
  • Profit factor: a comparison of gross profits with gross losses; consider it together with trade count and drawdown.
  • Buy-and-hold comparison: a baseline for assessing whether the strategy outperformed simply holding the same asset over the test period.

Settings needed to reproduce the test

A meaningful reproduction needs enough detail to rerun the same strategy under the same conditions. Record these items for the original run and for any alternative SuperTrend settings:

  • Symbol, exchange or data feed, and exact start and end dates.
  • Chart timeframe and chart type.
  • SuperTrend implementation, input values, and Pine Script version or code.
  • Whether the strategy trades long, short, or both.
  • Commission and slippage assumptions.
  • Whether Bar Magnifier, historical tick execution, or Deep Backtesting is enabled.
  • Strategy Report values for total P&L, maximum drawdown, profitable-trade percentage, profit factor, and buy-and-hold performance.

When comparing variants, keep the symbol, dates, timeframe, chart type, costs, and execution assumptions the same. Otherwise, a change in the report may reflect a changed test setup rather than a better SuperTrend configuration.

Why tick and realtime settings can change the picture

Execution settings affect how a strategy behaves. TradingView notes that recalculating on realtime ticks can make behavior differ from historical-bar calculations and can introduce repainting risks. Historical intrabar calculations also have documented constraints. The relevant caveats are in TradingView’s repainting documentation.

A backtest that appears precise is still conditional on its data and simulation rules. TradingView states: “No trading strategy can guarantee future performance, regardless of the data used for optimization and testing, because the future is inherently unknown.”
