Why bonds and defensive stocks attract money during a technology selloff
Government bonds offer a different risk exposure
High-growth technology shares are valued heavily on expectations about future revenue, profits and financing conditions. When those expectations are challenged, their valuations can fall quickly. Government bonds respond to a different set of forces, especially expected interest rates, inflation and demand for relatively liquid sovereign debt. What the bond rally says about Treasury yields
The reported fall in yields is the market’s immediate signal that demand for Treasury securities rose, or that investors revised down their expectations for future interest rates, or both. Existing bonds with fixed coupons become more valuable when comparable new bonds are expected to offer lower yields, which pushes their market prices higher.
That relationship works in both directions. A later rise in inflation expectations, interest-rate expectations or required compensation for holding longer maturities could reverse the price gains. The one-day rally therefore describes a market move on October 15, not a guarantee that yields will continue falling.

How persistent inflation complicates the “safe haven” trade
