You can detect when a model name first appears on an Arena leaderboard by taking regular snapshots of one category and comparing each snapshot with the last. The timestamp tells you when your monitor first observed that name—not when the model launched. A compact Python script can handle the comparison, but confirm the current data-access method and its terms before wiring it to a live source.
What this scraper can—and cannot—tell you
Arena rankings are based on people comparing model responses. The 2024 paper Chatbot Arena: An Open Platform for Evaluating LLMs by Human Preference describes crowdsourced pairwise comparisons and statistical methods for deriving scores and ranks. Its authors wrote: “To assess the performance of LLMs, the research community has introduced a variety of benchmarks.” The paper reported more than 240,000 votes during the platform’s initial period of operation; that is a historical figure, not a current vote count. Read the 2024 paper.

A newly detected name means the name was absent from the previous saved snapshot and present in the latest one. It does not establish a release date, prove that the entry represents a distinct model, or mean that the model has been independently verified. The Arena page covers multiple categories, including text, coding, web development, image generation, video generation, and agents, so a tracker should record which category it checked. View Arena’s live leaderboard.
Choose a permitted way to retrieve leaderboard data
There are three broad approaches, but none should be assumed to work indefinitely. Arena’s page is the primary source for its public rankings; parsing page content can break if the site changes. A structured endpoint can be easier to process, but use one only if it is documented and permitted for your purpose. A third-party project publishes an OpenAPI schema for a scraper/API with full-chat, top-model, and modality-specific routes, and fields such as rank, public model name, organization, provider, and capabilities. It is not an official Arena API, and its availability does not establish Arena’s permission or support. See the third-party schema.

Before scheduling requests, check the current official documentation and terms for permitted access, rate limits, and any published refresh cadence. Those details can change; the sources cited here do not establish a currently supported official scraping endpoint or a polling interval. Keep the retrieval layer separate from the comparison logic so you can change the data source without changing how snapshots are compared.
Build the snapshot comparison
The core of the monitor is independent of any particular endpoint: normalize the names for comparison, preserve the original strings for display, and calculate which normalized names are newly present. The example below assumes you have already obtained a list of model-name strings through an allowed access method. It does not fetch Arena data and is not a verified 70-line, ready-to-run scraper.

# observed_at, new_names = record_snapshot(names, "text", "your-source")
# for name in new_names:
# print(f"First observed {observed_at}: {name}")
The example writes a single snapshot file and refuses to compare against a different category. For multiple boards, keep a separate snapshot per category or store category-specific histories. A successful first fetch creates a baseline and deliberately reports no additions: without an earlier snapshot, the script cannot know which entries are newly observed.
Make the monitor reliable
Keep category and source consistent
Compare snapshots from the same board and access method. Arena has multiple categories, and the third-party schema also describes modality labels such as chat, webdev, image, video, and search. Changing category can make many names appear “new” simply because the underlying list changed. Store the category, source, and UTC observation time with every snapshot.

Separate name changes from model changes
Normalization in the example ignores capitalization and collapses whitespace, but otherwise preserves differences in the name. A rename may therefore look like a new model, while duplicate spellings may collapse into one entry. Preserve the original strings, inspect apparent additions, and avoid automatically treating a changed label as a confirmed new model. If a source provides stable identifiers, retain them alongside display names rather than inventing identity rules from names alone.
Handle failed or malformed fetches safely
Only compare and save after a fetch has completed successfully and the returned data passes validation. A timeout, access-denied response, changed page structure, or empty/malformed payload should produce an error—not replace a good snapshot with an empty set. Keep the last successful snapshot so a later run can compare against it. If an alert matters, log failures and the last successful observation time; an outage can delay detection.

Keep rank movement as a separate signal
To detect rank changes, store each model’s rank in addition to its name and compare ranks for models present in both snapshots. Report additions and rank movements separately: neither a rank shift nor a first-seen name proves a model’s launch timing or overall capability.

Interpret leaderboard changes with care
Arena is a preference-based evaluation, not a universal capability score. A 2025 paper, The Leaderboard Illusion, argues that private pre-release tests, selective disclosure of scores, and unequal access to battle data can distort rankings and encourage optimization for Arena-specific dynamics. Those are the authors’ findings and interpretation, not proof that every Arena rank is invalid. Treat leaderboard position as one signal and consider the evaluation context when using it to compare models. Read The Leaderboard Illusion.

Operational checklist
- Pick one category and keep it consistent across snapshots.
- Confirm that your chosen access method is currently allowed and documented; check applicable limits and terms.
- Record the UTC time, category, source, and model names for each successful snapshot.
- Treat the first successful snapshot as a baseline, not a list of new releases.
- Keep failed fetches from overwriting the last valid snapshot.
- Review apparent additions for renames, duplicate variants, or category changes.
- Describe alerts as first observed by your monitor, never as verified launch announcements.
