Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Those checks help separate an ISP or modem issue from a router, cable, wireless, or client-device limitation. The exact router model and hardware revision matter, so available ports, settings, and menu paths can differ.
Start with a wired speed test
Use a computer connected to the router by Ethernet and run a speed test. Where practical, connect the same computer directly to the modem and repeat the test under similar conditions. Wired testing removes Wi-Fi signal conditions from the first comparison.

- Direct-to-modem and through-router results are similarly slow: TP-Link says the problem is with the modem or ISP, not the router. Contact your ISP or investigate the modem and service.
- Direct-to-modem is faster, but through-router is slow: focus on the router and the Ethernet path between the modem, router, and test computer.
- Wired speed through the router is normal, but Wi-Fi is slow: continue with a controlled wireless test and check the client and wireless environment.
TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guide recommends comparing the router test with a direct-to-modem test to distinguish an upstream problem from a router-side one.

Restart the modem and router in order
- Unplug both the modem and router.
- Wait two to three minutes.
- Power on the modem first and wait for it to reconnect.
- Restart the router, then repeat the wired test.
This is TP-Link’s recommended restart sequence; it is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee of higher speed.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Check the Ethernet cable and links
Try a known-working Ethernet cable between the modem and router. TP-Link recommends Cat6 or higher for best performance, but replacing a cable helps only if the existing one is faulty or limits the connection. Test a cable you already know works before buying another. Also check that the cable is firmly connected and that the connected devices have negotiated the expected link rate, if that information is available.
If your broadband plan exceeds 1 Gbps, the client’s Ethernet adapter and negotiated link rate can cap a wired test even when the service and router are capable of more. TP-Link’s guidance on a PC testing below 1 Gbps on a faster broadband plan calls out the client adapter, direct-to-modem result, negotiated link speed, and cabling as factors to check. Do not infer a router’s maximum from the Wi-Fi 6 label alone; port capability varies by model.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
If Ethernet is fine but Wi-Fi is slow
Run a close-range comparison
Place the wireless device six to nine feet from the router, with no walls, furniture, or other barriers between them, and keep both at roughly the same horizontal level. Run the test in this position and compare it with the wired result. This controlled check helps identify whether distance or obstacles contribute; it does not predict speeds in every room of the home.

Check the device and Wi-Fi conditions
Wi-Fi performance depends on the client’s wireless adapter, the band it is using, distance, obstacles, and nearby wireless activity. If one device is slow while another performs normally in the same position, investigate the slower device’s adapter and connection before changing router-wide settings. If performance changes by location, test closer to the router before treating it as a service or router-capacity problem.

- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
Neighboring networks can interfere with Wi-Fi. TP-Link suggests checking channel and channel-width settings; its examples are 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz and 80 or 160 MHz on 5 GHz. These are diagnostic options, not universal recommendations. The available bands and widths depend on the router model, and the best choice depends on local interference and client support. Change one setting at a time and retest so you can tell whether it helped.
Temporarily test traffic-management settings
If the router supports QoS or Parental Controls, temporarily disable the relevant feature and repeat the same test. If performance changes, review the configuration rather than assuming the feature is inherently slow. QoS prioritizes selected devices or applications when the network is busy; it does not add bandwidth to your ISP connection. Controls and setup paths vary by model. TP-Link explains its router QoS setup in its QoS guide.

When the results point to a router issue
If a direct-to-modem test is faster, Ethernet through the router is slow, and the cable and client link are not limiting the result, check the router’s exact-model support information. For persistent instability, TP-Link recommends checking for model-specific firmware information. Confirm the model, hardware revision, and region before downloading or applying firmware; do not assume instructions for another TP-Link router apply. The Archer AX6000 support page illustrates why hardware revisions and regional support information matter. For ongoing connection instability, see TP-Link’s router troubleshooting guide.

| What you observe | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| Direct-to-modem and through-router wired results are similarly slow | Modem or ISP service |
| Direct-to-modem is normal, but wired through the router is slow | Router, modem-to-router cable, Ethernet ports, or client link rate |
| Wired through the router is normal, but close-range Wi-Fi is slow | Client wireless adapter, Wi-Fi band, interference, or router wireless settings |
| Close-range Wi-Fi is acceptable, but a distant room is slow | Distance, walls, obstacles, and local wireless conditions |
Run comparisons with the same device and as similar test conditions as possible. Internet speed tests can vary with the test server and network activity, so a single result is less informative than a repeatable difference between these checks.
