TP-Link Roam 7 Review: What Travelers Need to Know

The TP-Link Roam 7 (TL-WR3602BE) can turn hotel Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a tethered phone connection into one private Wi-Fi network for your travel devices. It is a router, not a self-contained cellular hotspot: you supply the internet connection and external power. That makes it useful when you want to connect several devices through one login, but less appealing if you want a battery-powered device that provides mobile data on its own.

What the Roam 7 does—and what it does not

The Roam 7 takes an existing internet connection and shares it with your devices. Its upstream connection can come from Ethernet, a public Wi-Fi network, USB tethering from a phone, or a supported USB modem. In hotel or café hotspot mode, it joins the venue’s Wi-Fi and broadcasts a separate network for your laptop, phone, tablet, and other devices. TP-Link’s hotel Wi-Fi guide describes using its Tether app to select Hotspot Mode and complete the hotel’s captive portal; the devices you connect afterward use the router’s network.

That arrangement can make it easier to keep your devices on one network rather than signing each one into the venue separately. It does not improve a slow hotel connection just by being added, and a captive portal or network policy may not work with every setup. A travel router also does not guarantee anonymity or complete security: encryption, VPN configuration, upstream network conditions, and your own device behavior all matter.

Most importantly, the Roam 7 has no built-in battery or SIM-based cellular connection. It cannot provide internet by itself. You need an outside source of internet and a source of power wherever you use it.

How fast is the Roam 7?

TP-Link classifies it as a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 BE3600 router and lists maximum wireless link rates of up to 2,882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. These are advertised Wi-Fi band rates, not a promise of actual internet speed. Your usable speed depends on the venue’s connection, the distance and obstacles between devices and router, and the capabilities of the devices connected to it.

For wired connections, TP-Link lists one 2.5 Gbps WAN port and one Gigabit LAN port. The WAN port can accept a wired internet feed; the LAN port gives you a wired connection for a compatible device. There is also a USB 3.0 port for supported tethering or modem connections. The router’s USB-C port is for power, not an internal battery or cellular connection.

What independent testing says about performance

RTINGS found that the Roam 7 can deliver fast streaming and downloads when devices are nearby, but reported poor range in its testing. RTINGS says it is a poor fit for multi-level homes and does not support mesh expansion. For a hotel room or a small travel setup, range may matter less; for a large rental or a home with multiple floors, the test findings are a reason to consider a different kind of router.

RTINGS also compared the Roam 7 with the TP-Link Roam 6 (TL-WR3002X) and found the Roam 6 smaller, lighter, faster, and longer-reaching in its tests. Those results describe RTINGS’ comparison, not a universal outcome for every location or device. The Roam 7’s Wi-Fi 7 label alone does not establish that it will outperform the Roam 6 for your use.

RTINGS describes the GL.iNet Beryl AX as a stronger option for range and software flexibility through its OpenWrt-based firmware, the GL.iNet Slate 7 as offering better range and a faster LAN port, and the ASUS RT-BE58 Go as supporting AiMesh. Those alternatives may suit buyers prioritizing those specific features; compare their current specifications and independent testing against your needs.

Modes, VPN support, and practical flexibility

TP-Link lists several operating modes: router, USB tethering, 3G/4G/5G USB modem, hotspot/WISP, access point, range extender, and client. The range of modes lets the Roam 7 work with different kinds of upstream connections, but compatibility is not automatic for every phone, USB modem, network, or regional configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TP-Link lists OpenVPN and WireGuard client and server functions. A VPN subscription is not included, and TP-Link notes that compatibility can vary by VPN provider and configuration. VPN support is therefore a feature to check against the service and setup you intend to use, not a guarantee that any provider will work without adjustments.

RTINGS also notes WAN failover and load balancing among the router’s features. Those capabilities can be relevant when configuring more than one internet source, but they do not create a second connection or make an unreliable source dependable on their own.

Power, portability, and travel use

TP-Link specifies USB-C power at 5V/3A and says there is no built-in battery. A compatible USB-C power bank can supply power, but check that it can provide the required output and that your cable is suitable. Otherwise, plan to use a compatible power adapter and an outlet.

TechRadar’s hands-on review, published August 9, 2026, describes the Roam 7 as useful for travelers with several devices and notes its public Wi-Fi, phone, and mobile-router connection options. The reviewer’s assessment supports the central use case: keeping multiple devices connected through one travel router. It does not establish that every hotel, café, cruise ship, or other network will permit or support it. If you are considering it for a cruise, check the cruise line’s network terms and device rules before relying on it; the fact that it can share some public Wi-Fi connections is not evidence that it works on every ship network.

Who should consider the Roam 7?

It may suit you if

  • You regularly travel with several devices and want them to use one router connection.
  • You can supply the upstream internet through hotel Wi-Fi, Ethernet, phone tethering, or a supported USB modem.
  • You value multiple operating modes, a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, and listed OpenVPN and WireGuard support.
  • You can power it from a compatible USB-C adapter or power bank.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a device that includes its own cellular data connection and battery.
  • You need broad coverage across several floors or mesh expansion; RTINGS’ testing flags range as a weakness and reports no mesh support.
  • You expect the router itself to make a slow hotel or public internet connection faster.
  • Your use depends on a particular captive portal, USB modem, VPN provider, or cruise network that you have not confirmed is compatible.

Verdict

The TP-Link Roam 7 is best understood as a flexible, externally powered travel router for sharing an internet connection you already have. Its Wi-Fi 7 specifications, connection modes, and VPN functions give it useful versatility, especially for travelers with several devices. The trade-offs are decisive: no built-in battery or cellular data, a need to provide both power and internet, and range limitations reported by RTINGS. For a single room and a known upstream connection, it may simplify device management; for larger coverage or standalone mobile internet, its core design is the wrong fit.
