The TP-Link Roam 6 TL-WR3002X is a compact Wi-Fi 6 travel router with a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, USB tethering options, VPN client and server support, and a microSD/TF slot. Its AX3000 label and advertised wireless rates describe link-rate specifications, not measured internet speeds. TP-Link’s product pages establish a broad feature set, but do not establish real-world throughput, VPN speed, or how reliably it handles every hotel login page.
What the TL-WR3002X is
TP-Link identifies the TL-WR3002X as the Roam 6, an AX3000 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 travel router. It can create a local wireless network using an existing wired connection, a compatible USB cellular device, a phone tether, or another Wi-Fi network, depending on the selected mode and source device.

TP-Link lists maximum link rates of 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. These are manufacturer-rated Wi-Fi link rates, not a promise of that internet throughput: actual results depend on the source connection, client devices, distance, interference, and other conditions. The product pages do not provide independent throughput or range tests. TP-Link’s US product specifications

- 2.5 Gbps WAN: The port used to connect an upstream wired internet source. Its higher link rating can be useful when the available source and network equipment support it; it does not make a slower hotel or broadband connection faster.
- 1 Gbps LAN: A wired connection for a local device, such as a laptop or other network equipment.
- USB 3.0: Used for supported USB tethering or modem workflows and for sharing external storage. Compatibility depends on the connected phone, modem, or storage device.
- USB-C power: The router has no built-in battery. TP-Link Australia says it can be powered by a 5V/3A power bank, so portable use requires a separate power source. TP-Link Australia’s product page
- MicroSD/TF slot: TP-Link’s comparison material lists support up to 512 GB, and describes file sharing from a card or USB storage. This is optional; a card is not needed for routing. TP-Link UK’s product page
Before packing a power bank, verify that it can supply the specified 5V/3A output. Do not assume that every USB-C bank or cable will meet that requirement.

Seven operating modes: which connection each uses
TP-Link lists seven modes. The right one depends on what internet source is available where you are; some require a compatible modem, phone, or upstream router.
| Mode | Typical role |
|---|---|
| Router | Shares a wired internet connection with devices on the router’s local network. |
| USB tethering | Uses a compatible tethered phone as the internet source. |
| 3G/4G USB modem | Uses a compatible cellular USB modem as the source connection. |
| Hotspot/WISP | Connects to an existing Wi-Fi network and shares that connection with your devices. |
| Access point | Adds Wi-Fi to an existing wired network. |
| Range extender | Relays an existing Wi-Fi network to extend its coverage. |
| Client | Connects a wired device to an existing Wi-Fi network through the router. |
TP-Link also advertises one-step captive portal authentication for the Roam 6. That may simplify joining some public or hotel hotspots, but the product information does not establish success with every portal or network policy. Check the venue’s rules and be ready to authenticate through its required process. TP-Link US product page

VPN support and file sharing
VPN client and server protocols
TP-Link lists OpenVPN, WireGuard, PPTP, and L2TP support in client and server roles. This gives the router options for VPN configurations, but protocol support alone does not establish encrypted throughput, ease of setup for a particular provider, or a security audit. VPN use does not guarantee anonymity or protect against every online threat. No VPN speed testing is established by the product specifications.

The USB 3.0 port and microSD/TF slot can make files available to connected devices, according to TP-Link. This is a separate convenience from internet routing; storage capacity, compatibility, and transfer speed should not be inferred beyond the manufacturer’s stated support. How it compares with TP-Link’s smaller travel routers
TP-Link’s comparison material places the TL-WR3002X above the TL-WR1502X on listed Wi-Fi class, WAN speed, USB generation, and storage options. The older TL-WR902AC and TL-WR802N have lower listed Wi-Fi classes and 10/100 Mbps Ethernet. These are manufacturer comparisons, not independent performance rankings; verify the regional model and feature list before buying.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Who should consider the TL-WR3002X?
- It is a plausible fit if you want multiple ways to share wired, Wi-Fi, or compatible cellular internet; need a faster-than-gigabit WAN link for a suitable upstream network; or value USB storage and a TF slot.
- It may be more router than you need if your travel setup only needs basic Wi-Fi from a modest connection and you will not use its higher-rated WAN, tethering, VPN, or storage features.
- Plan around power if you expect to use it away from outlets: the router has no battery, and TP-Link specifies a 5V/3A power bank as an option.
- Do not buy based only on AX3000 if your deciding factor is actual speed, range, client capacity, latency, or VPN performance. The cited product specifications do not provide measured results for those questions.
Verdict
On specifications, the TL-WR3002X is a feature-rich travel router: its standout practical combination is AX3000 Wi-Fi 6, a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, multiple connection modes, USB 3.0, VPN protocol support, and optional card-based file sharing. Its trade-offs are that portability still requires separate power and its feature list does not substitute for independent testing. Whether it is worth buying depends on needing those connection and port options—not on treating advertised link rates as guaranteed real-world speed.
