It is a discontinued dual-band Wi-Fi 5 system: its two Gigabit Ethernet ports per unit and optional Ethernet backhaul are useful, while its older wireless standard and independently reported mediocre range make it a poor fit for buyers who need newer capabilities or broad, dependable coverage.
What the Deco M4 offers
The Deco M4 is an AC1200-class, dual-band mesh system. It uses 802.11ac on 5 GHz and 802.11n on 2.4 GHz. TP-Link lists maximum physical rates of 867 Mbps and 300 Mbps on those bands, respectively. AC1200 adds the two figures together; it does not mean a single device will receive 1,167 Mbps of usable throughput. Actual speeds depend on the client, signal, interference, network traffic, and whether the mesh units communicate wirelessly or over Ethernet. TP-Link’s product page presents the rates as manufacturer specifications, not measured real-world results.

TP-Link advertises up to 5,500 square feet of coverage for a three-pack and support for up to 100 devices. Those are qualified manufacturer claims, not guarantees for a particular home. Walls, layout, interference, client devices, traffic, and unit placement can all change the result. A mesh system can extend coverage, but adding nodes does not eliminate weak placement or wireless interference.

How fast is it in real use?
RTINGS tested a purchased two-pack in dual-mesh mode, with supplementary standalone testing. Its review, updated September 25, 2026, describes the M4 as having decent top speeds but mediocre range. RTINGS says a nearby unit can suit an internet connection up to about 500 Mbps; this is the review’s assessment of its test results, not a speed guarantee for every household. The review characterizes the system as adequate for apartments, condos, and single-story homes, but its range result should not be treated as a prediction for every building. #1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
For a 500 Mbps broadband plan, the M4 may be sufficient when devices are relatively close to a node and the local wireless conditions are favorable. That does not mean a device will consistently see 500 Mbps over Wi-Fi, especially through walls or at a distant node. If you pay for faster broadband, use demanding workloads across several rooms, or want better performance with newer Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 devices, the M4’s Wi-Fi 5 ceiling is a reason to look elsewhere.
RTINGS also reports that the M4 lacks DFS support. In a congested apartment environment, the absence of DFS channels can reduce the available channel choices, although the effect depends on local congestion and network conditions. It is one consideration, not proof that the system will perform poorly in every apartment.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Wired ports and Ethernet backhaul
Each Deco M4 unit has two Gigabit Ethernet ports that auto-sense WAN or LAN use. TP-Link supports Ethernet backhaul, allowing compatible units to communicate over wired Ethernet rather than relying solely on a wireless link. This can be useful where you already have Ethernet cabling between rooms or can run it to node locations.
The two-port limit is modest if a unit must connect both to the upstream network and to several wired devices. If you need more connections at a node, an Ethernet switch can add ports; no particular switch is necessary to understand the trade-off. Check your planned wiring before buying, since the port count is per unit and the role of each port depends on how the system is configured.

Features, setup, and compatibility
TP-Link lists router and access point modes, guest networks, parental controls, QoS by device, IPv4/IPv6, port forwarding, and app management. Feature availability and app behavior can vary by hardware revision and firmware, so verify the support information for the unit’s region and version rather than assuming every listing has identical capabilities. The detailed TP-Link datasheet cited here is for hardware version 3.0. TP-Link’s Deco M4 V3 datasheet provides version-specific specifications.
Deco systems support mixed Deco mesh according to TP-Link, but the exact behavior and supported features depend on the models and firmware involved. For roaming, TP-Link notes that client devices need to support 802.11 k/v/r for the relevant roaming behavior; clients and configuration can affect the experience. Do not assume that every phone, laptop, or smart-home device will move between nodes seamlessly just because the network uses mesh.

Who should consider the Deco M4?
It may suit
- Someone furnishing a small apartment, condo, or single-story home who finds a clean, complete kit at a notably low price.
- A household with a broadband plan around or below 500 Mbps that does not need the latest Wi-Fi generation, subject to the limits of placement and wireless conditions.
- A buyer who can use Ethernet backhaul and needs only a couple of wired ports at each unit.
Look for a newer system if
- You want Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 features, or expect to keep the system through several broadband or device upgrades.
- Your home has difficult coverage challenges: RTINGS’ testing found mediocre range, so a large, multi-story, or obstruction-heavy layout is a particular concern.
- You need more than two wired ports at a node, or want a current model with clearly verifiable local support and warranty coverage.
Is the Deco M4 still worth buying?
RTINGS identifies the Deco M4 as discontinued and names the Deco S4 as a similar-spec current alternative in its review. Discontinued does not automatically mean unusable, but it makes the remaining listing’s condition, local warranty, hardware revision, firmware status, and seller support more important. Availability and support can differ by region. There is no basis here for claiming the M4 is cheaper than current alternatives across today’s market, so compare the total cost of the number of units you need before deciding.
