TP-Link Archer BE550 vs. Archer BE800: Which Wi-Fi 7 Router Should You Buy?

Buy the TP-Link Archer BE550 if its 2.5 Gbps WAN and LAN ports cover your internet plan and wired devices. Choose the Archer BE800 if you have a practical need for 10 Gbps connectivity, its SFP+/RJ45 combo port, or its higher advertised Wi-Fi band rates. Both are tri-band Wi-Fi 7 routers; the BE800’s larger headline numbers are not a promise of faster service for every home or device.

Current prices and stock have not been verified, so check the live price gap before deciding whether the BE800’s added hardware is worth the premium.

What is the difference between the Archer BE550 and BE800?

The biggest functional distinction is wired capacity: the BE550 tops out at 2.5 Gbps on its WAN and LAN ports, while the BE800 adds two 10 Gbps-capable ports. The BE800 also has higher advertised wireless band rates and more antennas and streams in TP-Link’s comparison. Those specifications can matter for compatible equipment, but they do not establish a particular speed or coverage advantage in a given home.

These are sums of theoretical band-level rates, not the speed one device should expect from an internet speed test.

Do you need a 10GbE router?

For most buyers, the question is whether their internet service or wired network can use more than 2.5 Gbps—not whether the router has the larger number printed on its box. The BE550’s single 2.5 Gbps WAN port can accommodate an internet connection up to that port’s link capacity, while its four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports support compatible multi-gig wired devices. Your actual throughput can be lower because of your plan, equipment, cabling, device, configuration, and network conditions.

When the BE550 is enough

  • Your internet plan is 2.5 Gbps or slower, and you do not need a faster wired link between the router and another device.
  • Your wired devices connect at 2.5 Gbps or less.
  • You want multi-gig LAN ports for several devices without paying for 10 Gbps ports you will not use.

When the BE800’s 10 Gbps ports matter

  • You have, or expect to get, internet service above 2.5 Gbps and compatible provider equipment.
  • You need a 10 Gbps connection from the router to a compatible computer, NAS, switch, or other wired network device.
  • You have a specific use for the SFP+/RJ45 combo port. Confirm that your connected equipment and chosen port configuration match your network.

TP-Link says 10 Gbps internet requires a compatible service plan and equipment. The BE800’s two 10 Gbps ports cannot both be configured as WAN ports at the same time; a 10 Gbps port can instead serve as a LAN connection depending on setup. A 10 Gbps-capable router alone does not upgrade an ISP plan or make a slower client link faster.

How much does the BE800’s Wi-Fi 7 advantage matter?

TP-Link lists higher rates for every BE800 band: 11,520 Mbps on 6 GHz, 5,760 Mbps on 5 GHz, and 1,376 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, compared with 5,760, 2,880, and 574 Mbps respectively for the BE550. These are advertised physical rates across bands, not a forecast for a single client. The client must support the relevant Wi-Fi capabilities, and real performance depends on factors such as signal conditions, distance, interference, channel availability, and the router’s internet or wired connection.

Both models list Wi-Fi 7 and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). A feature name alone does not guarantee the same benefit with every client: devices must support the relevant feature, and firmware, configuration, and regional conditions can affect what is available. TP-Link notes that 320 MHz channel width is available only on 6 GHz for the BE800 and that regional rules can limit simultaneous wide channels. The manufacturer also says the product may not support every mandatory feature in the ratified IEEE 802.11be specification.

The BE800’s eight antennas and twelve listed streams, versus six antennas and six streams on the BE550, are hardware differences—not proof of a particular range or speed in your home. TP-Link places both products in a four-bedroom coverage category, but that is not a universal coverage guarantee. Building materials, layout, placement, interference, client radios, and local rules all affect coverage.

Will either router fix a dead zone?

Do not choose the BE800 solely on the assumption that its larger specifications will eliminate a weak-signal area. Start with router placement and the layout of the home. If a dead zone remains, a wired access point or wired backhaul can provide a more direct way to extend network coverage than relying on a distant wireless link.

Both models are listed as EasyMesh-compatible, but compatibility labels do not establish that every router, extender, feature, or firmware combination will interoperate identically. Before buying expansion hardware, check the exact model and firmware support with TP-Link. Its support resources provide product help; the BE800 support page also lists setup materials, FAQs, and a setup guide/video using the BE800 as an example: Archer BE800 support and downloads.

Is the BE800 worth the extra cost?

There is no reliable value verdict without the live prices. The extra hardware is easiest to justify when you will use 10 Gbps connectivity or have compatible clients and a reason to benefit from the BE800’s higher listed wireless rates. If your service and wired devices fit within 2.5 Gbps, the BE550 covers the clearest practical needs at a lower hardware tier; compare current retailer prices before paying more for features you may not use.

The BE800’s LED screen may be a convenience preference, but it is not a reason to expect faster networking. Similarly, the two products’ listed antenna and stream counts should not be treated as a substitute for a controlled, home-specific performance comparison; no independent side-by-side test result is established here.

Which router should you buy?

Choose the Archer BE550 if

  • Your internet service and wired connections fit within 2.5 Gbps.
  • You want four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports and do not have a concrete 10 Gbps requirement.
  • You would rather avoid paying for higher advertised rates and ports that your equipment cannot use.

Choose the Archer BE800 if

  • You can use its 10 Gbps WAN/LAN connectivity with compatible service or wired devices.
  • You specifically need the SFP+/RJ45 combo port or want more headroom for a 10 Gbps-capable network.
  • You have compatible Wi-Fi clients and a plausible use for its higher listed band rates, while accepting that the rates are not guaranteed client speeds.

Both routers can be set up through TP-Link’s Tether app or web interface. Use the exact product and hardware version shown for your region when checking specifications, support, and retailer listings.
