Why the total can vary from one family to another
These figures describe one modeled vehicle and mileage horizon, not every RAV4 trim or household. Your result can shift with the configuration you buy, the price you negotiate, how much you drive, local fuel costs, insurance, service choices, repair history, resale demand in your region and when you sell.
- Purchase price: The reported estimates do not establish what a buyer will pay after dealer pricing, taxes, fees or incentives.
- Annual mileage and fuel: Driving more or less than the estimate’s 60,000 miles over five years changes fuel use and may affect maintenance and resale.

That comparison is attributed to the article; the surfaced Toyota specifications support trim-specific MPG, but do not establish that comparative savings calculation. Toyota’s 2026 brochure says ToyotaCare includes normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, plus two years of roadside assistance. Read the coverage terms for the vehicle and market you are buying, and distinguish included scheduled maintenance from repairs or other ownership costs. ToyotaCare should not be counted as five years of free maintenance.
How to interpret resale ratings
J.D. Power’s currently surfaced page for the 2026 RAV4 shows a resale score of 88/100, described as a forecast of depreciation over the next three years. The How-To Geek article quotes an 82/100 score. The figures differ, likely because ratings are updated or versioned; they should not be silently combined. How to make a useful five-year comparison
If you are comparing the RAV4 with another family SUV, make the assumptions match before comparing totals. A broad claim that one model is cheaper than all competitors is not supported by estimates for the RAV4 alone.

- Match the vehicle: Compare similar trims, drivetrains and equipment, and use actual transaction-price assumptions rather than an unqualified base price.
- Set the ownership pattern: Use the same annual mileage, five-year distance and resale timing for each vehicle.
- Use local inputs: Apply the same fuel-price basis and geography, while accounting for each vehicle’s exact fuel-economy estimate.
- Separate cost types: List fuel, scheduled maintenance, repairs and depreciation separately. Mark any estimate whose categories or assumptions are unavailable instead of filling gaps with guesses.
- Check coverage: Compare warranty and included-maintenance terms over the same period; coverage limits and markets can differ.
