“Toy War” is ambiguous. This guide uses it to mean Toy Box Wars, Iron Tuzi Gaming’s miniature-agnostic wargame. A separate product called Toy Battle is a two-player tile-placement board game, not a comparable miniature battlefield system. If you meant the board game or the historical magazine title, your buying decision is different.
The practical choice is between a rules framework for figures you already own, a defined miniatures game with a particular hobby workflow, and a boxed product that supplies most of the table components. No publisher description proves that one system is universally better balanced or more fun, so compare model freedom, preparation, collection size, player count, session length, and how much assembly or rules construction you actually want.

1. Decide how much model freedom you need
Toy Box Wars: maximum object freedom, with responsibility shifted to the rules
Toy Box Wars says it can be played with any toy, model, miniature or other object at any scale. That makes it the clearest fit for a shelf of action figures, toys, board-game pieces or mixed miniature ranges. You do not have to replace those objects with a designated faction collection.
Freedom does not automatically mean plug-and-play balance. The publisher’s sample build starts with a 3.75-inch action figure and assigns costs to abilities, advantages and disadvantages before applying armor and game-size adjustments. Treat that worked example as an explanation of the construction method, not as a tested balance rating for every toy. Before buying, read how the rules represent an object’s dimensions, abilities, equipment and points, then agree with your opponent on what counts as a fair profile.
Small Wars: broad model compatibility without building every profile yourself
Small Wars is described as a historical and fantasy tabletop skirmish game that does not require proprietary models. It is therefore suitable when you already own figures from several ranges but would rather use a conventional rules set than price every ability on your own. Confirm how your chosen figures are based and organized before a first game, because “any models” does not tell you whether a particular base footprint or measurement convention will be convenient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMaelstrom’s Edge: a defined 28mm ecosystem
Maelstrom’s Edge lists a 28mm model scale. That gives you a clear visual and physical target when expanding a force, but it is less accommodating than an any-scale framework if your collection mixes very large and very small figures. Its model range is part of a broader hobby system involving assembly, painting, terrain and mission play, so choose it when a coherent collection matters as much as reusing toys.
WARSURGE and War On Terra: customize the rules rather than forcing a model range
WARSURGE says players can customize profiles for their models or figures. This sits between a fully open toy framework and a fixed faction game: the miniatures can be personal, but the profile-building work remains part of setup.
War On Terra advertises one model-by-model ruleset that extends from skirmish games to full-army battles. That continuity is useful if you want to grow the same collection without learning a separate rules engine at each size. The site’s wording establishes the range of play, not a guarantee that every third-party model is proportioned or balanced identically.

2. Compare rules preparation and customization
Use a construction system when the figures are the point
Toy Box Wars makes unit design an explicit activity. A sensible pre-game checklist is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- List what the object visibly represents: weapons, armor, movement features, special abilities and liabilities.
- Apply the published costs for abilities, advantages and disadvantages.
- Apply armor and game-size adjustments described by the rules.
- Write the resulting profile and points value before placing the model on the table.
- Let both players review unusual abilities and agree on interpretations before deployment.
This process is valuable for imaginative collections, but it adds a design session that a boxed faction game may avoid. Do not infer that the 3.75-inch sample figure is a benchmark for balance; it demonstrates the method only.
Use customizable profiles when you want a repeatable roster
WARSURGE’s profile approach is aimed at players who want their own models to have defined statistics while retaining a reusable rules framework. Decide in advance whether you will maintain profiles on paper, in the publisher’s resources or through its Android/iOS app support. A custom profile is most useful when you expect to reuse the same model in several battles; otherwise the initial design work can outweigh the benefit.
Use a single scale-spanning ruleset when your collection will grow
War On Terra’s advertised model-by-model ruleset is designed to cover skirmishes through full armies. That can reduce the need to learn a second game later, but it also means you should check how the rules handle activation order, unit size and scenario objectives at the scale you actually intend to play. The publisher says the full rules and other required game elements are available free on its site, so you can read those sections before committing to models.
Choose defined mission procedures when you prefer less pre-game design
Maelstrom’s Edge describes alternating unit activation and mission scoring. Those procedures put more structure into the battle itself: players take turns activating units and pursue scenario goals rather than relying only on elimination. This is a better fit if you want the rules to tell you what to do after deployment instead of constructing every unit’s capabilities.

3. Account for components and hobby labor
Zone Wars is the closest supplied-components option
Free League Publishing lists Zone Wars core sets with miniatures, paper terrain, rules, cards and dice. The page describes the sets as requiring no assembly, which lowers the barrier between opening the box and playing. It currently presents two core sets; check the live product listing for the exact contents and regional stock before purchase, because a publisher page does not establish what a local retailer has on hand.
Free League describes the intended experience this way: “Designed to be played by up to four players, Zone Wars is all about embracing mayhem and emergent narrative to create a fun and fast-flowing experience.” That is a product description, not an independent review, but it tells you the design emphasis is accessible, eventful play rather than a long model-preparation project.
Maelstrom’s Edge requires a hobby plan
Spiral Arm Studios says Maelstrom’s Edge models require assembly and painting and points players toward terrain. Its V2 rulebook is listed as a 256-page hardcover. Budget time for cutting parts, building models, choosing a paint standard and preparing a table; those steps are part of the purchase decision even when the rules are your main interest. If you want to play immediately with unassembled figures, this is a poor match compared with a no-assembly core set.
Bring your own table for the open frameworks
Toy Box Wars, Small Wars and WARSURGE are rules-first choices rather than publisher-described all-in-one component boxes. Plan for models or toys, measuring tools, dice, a playing surface and scenery appropriate to your chosen scenario. War On Terra says its rules and other required game elements are available free online, but that does not mean physical models or terrain are supplied. Decide whether you already own those materials before comparing the systems’ purchase requirements.
4. Match collection size to the way you play
Small Wars: a specified miniature band
Bannerline Games advertises Small Wars for 10–40 miniatures. That range gives you a concrete target for a compact collection: enough figures for a force, without assuming a mass-battle army. Verify how the game divides those models into units and scenarios in the current rules before buying several boxes, because the headline range alone does not define the ideal mix.
Maelstrom’s Edge: a larger force per side
Spiral Arm Studios describes typical Maelstrom’s Edge forces as 20–30 models per side. Combined with the 28mm scale, assembly, painting and terrain requirements, that points to a substantial hobby commitment. It is appropriate when you enjoy building a recognizable force and playing mission-driven battles, not when you want a handful of toys on the table with minimal preparation.

Skirmish-to-army systems: plan your expansion path
War On Terra explicitly positions one ruleset from skirmish to full army. WARSURGE advertises both battles and skirmishes, along with multiplayer and solo play. These descriptions support a gradual collection plan: begin with the smallest game your group will play, then add models without changing systems. They do not specify a universal model count, so use the scenarios and army-building rules you intend to play as the purchasing limit.
5. Check player count and session time before choosing a box
Zone Wars is the only system in this comparison for which the cited publisher page gives both player count and duration: one to four players, ages 14 and up, with sessions listed at one to two hours. That makes it the easiest choice when you regularly have a variable-sized group or a fixed evening window.
The cited pages for Toy Box Wars, Small Wars, Maelstrom’s Edge, WARSURGE and War On Terra do not provide directly comparable player or time figures. Do not fill that gap with assumptions based on model count. Read the current rules or scenario guidance, and ask your group whether it normally plays head-to-head, multiplayer or solo before ordering models.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Follow a practical buying checklist
- Name the game correctly. Confirm that you mean Toy Box Wars rather than Toy Battle, the separate tile-placement board game.
- Inventory your models. Record approximate sizes, bases, factions or themes, and whether you are willing to assemble or repaint anything.
- Choose your preparation tolerance. Select Toy Box Wars or WARSURGE if profile construction is enjoyable; select a supplied core set if opening the box and playing matters more; select Maelstrom’s Edge only if assembly, painting and terrain are welcome.
- Set the desired battle size. Use Small Wars’ advertised 10–40-miniature range, Maelstrom’s Edge’s typical 20–30 models per side, or a skirmish-to-army framework according to your storage and table space.
- Read one complete sample scenario. Check deployment, measuring, activation, scoring and victory conditions rather than judging a game only by its miniatures.
- Test unusual models with an opponent. For an any-object system, agree how height, base area, line of sight and special abilities will work before the first competitive game.
- Confirm what is actually in the box. Publisher pages describe products, but local stock, regional editions and current contents can change. Verify the live listing before paying.
- Start with the smallest viable purchase. Avoid buying a full collection until you know your group accepts the rules workload, table footprint and play time.
7. Which system fits which buyer?
Choose Toy Box Wars if your toys are the collection
It is the strongest match for a mixed shelf of objects at different scales and for players who enjoy translating fictional abilities into points. Its trade-off is the need to understand and apply the construction rules; miniature freedom is advertised flexibility, not a promise that every matchup is automatically balanced.
Choose Small Wars if you want open model choice with a conventional skirmish target
Its historical-and-fantasy positioning, no-proprietary-model requirement and stated 10–40-miniature range suit players who want to reuse figures without designing every unit from first principles.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose Zone Wars if supplied components and a defined session window matter most
The core-set contents, no-assembly description, one-to-four-player range and one-to-two-hour listing make it the most straightforward boxed starting point in this comparison. Confirm the current core-set contents and stock for your region.
Choose Maelstrom’s Edge if the hobby project is part of the appeal
The 28mm scale, 20–30-model-per-side forces, alternating activation and mission scoring support a coherent collection and a structured battlefield game. Assembly, painting, terrain and a 256-page hardcover V2 rulebook make it a deeper commitment than a ready-to-play box.
Choose WARSURGE if you want custom profiles across several modes
Its advertised support for customized profiles, battles, skirmishes, multiplayer and solo play is useful for players whose models do not belong to one proprietary range. Check whether the physical rulebook, compendium or app workflow suits your group before investing in a large collection.
Choose War On Terra if you want one rules engine from small games to armies
The advertised skirmish-to-full-army continuity and free online rules make it sensible for a gradual collection. Confirm the current status of any boxed product separately; the site’s free rules availability does not itself establish that a physical starter set is in stock.
8. What the published information cannot tell you
These pages do not provide independent balance studies, comparative win rates, measured average game times for most systems, total cost of ownership, retailer inventory or regional pricing. They also do not establish that an any-scale game will be equally satisfying with every toy size, or that a larger model count automatically creates a better battle. Treat the numbers as current publisher specifications, then validate the details that affect your table: bases, terrain footprint, scenario length, profile-building time and the availability of opponents.
