The best all-around setup is simple: start with the clean or upscaled filter, use the aspect option that preserves the least-stretched image, set docked HDR to Compatible Software Only, leave resolution on Automatic, and keep the default controls until a particular game gives you a reason to remap them. For nostalgia, switch to CRT Curved. Open the collection utility menu by pressing the right control stick inward.

This guide explains every picture, TV, control, and accessibility choice in Disney/Pixar Toy Story: Retro Roundup! on Nintendo Switch 2, including how to use Rewind, Practice Mode, and Rex’s Cheat Codes without making every game feel the same.

Recommended settings at a glance

Use these as starting points, then make one change at a time. The game collection and the Switch 2 system affect different parts of the image, so changing the console’s HDR mode will not replace the collection’s own filter choice.

Goal Collection setting Switch 2 docked setting Why
Clear everyday play Clean or upscaled filter HDR: Compatible Software Only; Resolution: Automatic Preserves small sprite details and avoids applying HDR treatment to non-HDR software.
Retro-TV appearance CRT Curved filter HDR: Compatible Software Only; Resolution: Automatic Adds the softer, scanline-style look associated with a curved CRT display.
High-refresh display Clean or upscaled filter 1080p or 1440p can permit 120Hz; 4K is limited to 60Hz Lets you choose between resolution and the refresh-rate options described for Switch 2 output.
Handheld readability Clean or upscaled filter Use the console screen without changing docked-output options Sharper edges make small text and sprites easier to inspect at a short viewing distance.

There is no single “best” profile for every player. A CRT-style filter deliberately softens edges, while a clean presentation makes pixels and lettering easier to read. Aspect-ratio choices likewise depend on whether your display makes the widened image look natural or visibly stretched.

What the Switch 2 collection contains

Disney/Pixar Toy Story: Retro Roundup! is listed for Nintendo Switch 2 as a Digital Eclipse collection published by Atari. Nintendo Life lists a North American release date of October 15, 2026, and a listed price of $29.99. The listing describes five classic games represented in 11 console and handheld versions, then names these entries: Toy Story, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!, Toy Story 2, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Toy Story Racer, and A Bug’s Life. Because the description says five games while naming six titles, treat the store listing’s version count and title list as the authoritative description of what is presented rather than assuming that every named entry is a separate version category.

The package is more than a set of ROM-style launches. It adds Rewind, Rex’s Cheat Codes, Practice Mode, interviews, a virtual museum, and a music player. Those tools matter when you move between older platformers, a PlayStation-era racer, and handheld editions with different screen layouts and control expectations.

Open the collection utility menu

All of the important per-collection options are in one overlay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Launch a game from the collection.
  2. Press the right control stick inward to open the collection utility menu.
  3. Choose the display, control, save, or practice option you want.
  4. Resume the game and check the result in motion, not only on a static title screen.

Nintendo Everything reports that this menu includes widescreen and fullscreen choices, background borders, filters, save, load, reset, resume, and customizable controls. It is therefore the first place to look when the image looks stretched, when the surrounding border is distracting, or when a button assignment feels awkward.

Save, load, reset, and resume

Use save before experimenting with a new control layout or a difficult section. The review reports three save files per game, giving you room to keep a normal progress file while reserving another for practice or experimentation. Load returns to a stored point, reset restarts the current game state, and resume returns you to play after closing the overlay. Keep the distinction in mind: a reset is not a rewind and should be treated as a deliberate restart.

Choose the right picture filter

Clean or upscaled: the readability choice

Choose the clean or upscaled presentation when you want sharp edges, legible menus, and the clearest view of small sprites. This is the safest default for a modern television and for handheld play, where blurred pixels can make a small character or platform harder to identify. It also makes it easier to judge whether a display problem comes from the game image or from the television’s own processing.

  • Use it for first playthroughs when you are learning unfamiliar stages.
  • Use it for handheld versions with compact graphics or text.
  • Use it when a CRT effect makes scanlines obscure a jump, enemy, or item.

CRT Curved: the nostalgia choice

CRT Curved is the collection’s deliberately old-fashioned option. Digital Eclipse’s Stephen Frost demonstrated it at Gamescom, and Nintendo Everything specifically calls out the filter in its review. It is intended to suggest a curved retro television, with a softer image and scanline-style presentation rather than perfectly crisp modern pixels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Select CRT Curved when the display character is part of the experience. Expect less edge definition than with a clean filter; that softness is the point, not a defect. If a status icon or small piece of text becomes difficult to read, return to the clean or upscaled option for that game.

Background borders

Background borders fill or frame unused space when the game’s image does not occupy the entire display. Pick a border that keeps the play area easy to distinguish from the surrounding television image. A plain border is usually less distracting during precision platforming, while a decorative treatment can suit museum-style or showcase sessions. The collection menu lets you change this independently from the filter, so you can keep sharp pixels without accepting a plain black surround.

Widescreen or fullscreen?

Use the utility menu’s widescreen and fullscreen choices as an image-proportion decision, not a guarantee that every original game was designed for a modern wide panel. Widescreen can use more of a television, but widening an image can make circles, characters, and level geometry look unnaturally broad. Fullscreen or the less-distorting choice may preserve the original proportions more convincingly.

  1. Open the utility menu with the right stick.
  2. Select the available widescreen or fullscreen option.
  3. Look at a circular object, a character, and a horizontal platform.
  4. Keep the mode in which those shapes look least stretched.
  5. If the widened presentation looks wrong in one game, switch back rather than forcing one mode across the entire collection.

Make this check separately for games that use different original hardware formats. A setting that looks comfortable in a console platformer may not be the best choice for a handheld version.

Best Nintendo Switch 2 docked TV settings

The collection’s filter controls the rendered presentation, while Switch 2’s display settings control how the dock sends the signal to your television. Tom’s Guide recommends setting HDR to Compatible Software Only. That mode prevents non-HDR software from receiving an HDR treatment that can shift its colors. Since these are classic games presented through a collection, this is the cautious choice for consistent color.

HDR

Choose HDR: Compatible Software Only for docked play. Do not select a mode that applies HDR indiscriminately when the goal is to preserve the intended appearance of software that does not provide HDR output. If the picture suddenly looks too bright, washed out, or unusually saturated after changing HDR, return to Compatible Software Only before changing the game’s filter.

Resolution

Automatic is the safest general resolution choice. It lets the system negotiate an appropriate output with the connected television instead of locking the collection to a resolution the display may handle poorly.

Manual choices involve a trade-off described for Switch 2 output:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 1080p or 1440p can permit 120Hz.
  • 4K is limited to 60Hz on the system.

For this collection, resolution and refresh rate are separate from the CRT Curved or clean filter. Selecting 4K will not make CRT Curved sharper, and selecting 120Hz will not remove scanlines. Choose 4K when you prefer the television’s 4K presentation and 60Hz limit is acceptable; choose 1080p or 1440p when your display and seating make a 120Hz option more useful.

RGB range

Match the console’s RGB range to the range expected by the television. A mismatch can make blacks look crushed or the entire image look gray and low-contrast. If your TV offers an equivalent limited or full range setting, use matching choices on both devices rather than compensating with brightness controls.

ALLM and 120Hz

Switch 2 supports display options involving ALLM and 120Hz. ALLM can let a compatible television change to its low-latency game mode, while 120Hz is available only with the output conditions that support it. These are system-level options, so they do not alter the collection’s save files, filters, or control assignments. Enable them when your television supports them and you prefer that behavior; leave them off if your display does not handle the signal reliably.

Set up controls without losing the original feel

Start with the default layout. The collection spans different genres and original hardware, so a universal custom arrangement is unlikely to be comfortable in every title. Remap only the actions that feel awkward after you have played long enough to identify the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the utility menu by pressing the right control stick inward.
  2. Choose the customizable controls option.
  3. Play a short section with the default layout first.
  4. Change the button that causes a repeated reach, accidental press, or camera discomfort.
  5. Save the layout and test it in an active stage, race, or menu.
  6. Keep a separate layout only when the game’s demands genuinely differ.

What to evaluate during a remap

  • Jump and attack reach: Platforming benefits when frequently paired actions sit on buttons you can press without shifting your grip.
  • Camera comfort: If a game uses camera movement, place that action where your thumb can reach it without compromising movement.
  • Menu access: Make sure utility or pause access remains easy to find after changing gameplay buttons.
  • Race control: A racer may need a different balance between steering, acceleration, braking, and item or secondary actions than a platformer.
  • Handheld grip: A layout that feels fine with detached or full-size controls may feel cramped on the built-in handheld controls.

Use the collection’s How to Play material before changing buttons. It can clarify what an original game expects, reducing the chance that you remap an action simply because its purpose was unclear.

Use Practice Mode, Rewind, and Rex’s Cheat Codes deliberately

Practice Mode

Practice Mode is the best first response to a difficult jump, boss pattern, or unfamiliar control sequence. Use it to learn timing before committing to a normal run. It is especially useful when a game’s original difficulty assumes repeated attempts and memorization.

Rewind

Nintendo Everything reports that holding L2 and R2 together activates rewind. Use it immediately after a missed jump, hit, or wrong turn instead of replaying an entire section. Rewind is a precision tool: release it once you are back before the mistake, then continue normally. If you rewind too far, move forward again rather than repeatedly scrubbing until the timing becomes confusing.

Picture profiles for different play styles

Modern television, first playthrough

Open the utility menu, select clean or upscaled, choose the least-stretched aspect option, and keep borders unobtrusive. On the dock, set HDR to Compatible Software Only and resolution to Automatic. This profile puts readability ahead of period accuracy.

CRT-inspired living-room session

Select CRT Curved, test widescreen against fullscreen, and keep the option that preserves recognizable proportions. Use Compatible Software Only for HDR so the television does not add a separate color transformation to the deliberately softened image.

Handheld exploration

Use clean or upscaled first, because a sharper image helps at handheld viewing distance. Remap only the buttons that require an uncomfortable grip, and keep Rewind available for sections where the smaller screen makes a hazard harder to see.

Racer-focused session

Choose the filter that keeps track edges and interface text easiest to read. Test steering and acceleration together before altering secondary buttons. If the default arrangement feels natural, leave it unchanged; consistency is more valuable than a theoretically optimized layout.

What performance to expect

Nintendo Everything’s reviewer, Richard Ford, wrote in a review posted October 14, 2026: “I experienced no gameplay lag, frame drops, glitches, or other technical issues.” The same review says handheld and docked play flowed equally well in that reviewer’s sessions. This is a dated review observation, not a guarantee for every television, cable, firmware version, or future update.

The review also notes that some original camera problems remain. A clean filter, a different resolution, or a control remap cannot redesign the camera behavior built into an older game. If movement feels awkward despite responsive controls, first determine whether the issue is that inherited camera design rather than display lag.

Troubleshoot the most common picture problems

Symptom Likely setting to check Action
Colors look unusually bright or shifted HDR mode Set HDR to Compatible Software Only and reassess before changing the game filter.
Image looks stretched Widescreen/fullscreen choice Switch modes and compare circles, characters, and platforms; keep the least-distorted result.
Small text or sprites are hard to read CRT Curved filter Try clean or upscaled, then choose a less distracting border.
Black areas look crushed or gray RGB range Match the console range to the television’s corresponding range.
Expected 120Hz is unavailable Resolution and display support Remember that 1080p or 1440p can permit 120Hz, while 4K is limited to 60Hz; use a supported resolution.
Controls feel wrong in one game Customizable controls Return to the utility menu, remap only the awkward action, and test it during active play.

Should you use the CRT filter?

Use CRT Curved when you value period atmosphere more than maximum clarity. It is the right choice for a nostalgia-focused session, especially when the softened image and curved presentation are part of what you want from a retro collection. Use clean or upscaled when reading small graphics, learning a level, or playing handheld matters more. Switching between the two is quick, so there is no need to commit to one filter for the entire package.

Is the collection worth configuring game by game?

Yes. The collection’s range of console and handheld versions means screen proportions, control demands, and readability can change from one entry to another. Save a layout only when a game benefits from it, and judge the filter on the title currently on screen. A single global preset is convenient, but it can make one version comfortable while making another look stretched or feel awkward.
