Two compatible controllers
Prepare two compatible Xbox controllers. One controller is required per player; a cross-platform storefront listing also states the controller-per-player requirement. Connect a controller by USB or pair it wirelessly before launching, then check that the Xbox recognizes the second pad as a separate player. If both pads are connected but assigned to one profile, sign the second controller into its own guest or console account as your Xbox dashboard permits.

A second Xbox Wireless Controller is the straightforward choice for Player 2. Any alternative must be compatible with your Xbox and recognized by the console before the game starts. The game itself does not remove the need for a physical second controller.
A supported Xbox
The current Xbox listing advertises Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S play. On a Series console, use the Complete Edition shown in your library or store page and allow the console to finish any update before inviting the second player. Xbox backward-compatibility guidance says offline co-op and multiple controllers are supported when the original game supports those functions, but it also warns that functionality varies by game. For this edition, the product listing is the more specific reference: it explicitly lists local two-player co-op for Xbox One and Series X|S.
A mode and an activity to enter
Player 2 joins after you enter a playable section, not necessarily while you are still on the title screen. Decide whether you want the mission progression of Story Mode or the freer exploration of Toy Box Mode, then load an activity far enough for the game to display its join instruction.

Step-by-step: start local co-op on Xbox
- Connect the first controller. Turn on the Xbox and connect the controller you will use for Player 1. Confirm that dashboard navigation responds to it.
- Connect the second controller. Plug in or pair the second compatible Xbox controller. Press its Xbox button and verify that the console recognizes it as a different controller and, where required, a separate guest or user.
- Launch Toy Story 3 Complete Edition. Open the installed game from the Xbox dashboard. If the console offers an update, let it complete before troubleshooting co-op; menu wording can differ between builds.
- Select a mode. Choose Story Mode for campaign scenes and mission progression, or Toy Box Mode for sandbox activities and freer exploration. The official feature list says local two-player co-op is available in both modes.
- Enter a playable section. Start the selected activity with Player 1. Wait until the scene or activity is controllable rather than stopping at a mode-selection or loading screen.
- Read the Player 2 prompt. The game should display an on-screen instruction to join. Press the button or follow the input shown in that prompt on the second controller. The official Xbox listing confirms the feature but does not specify one universal join button, so the current prompt is authoritative for your build.
- Confirm the second player. After the prompt is accepted, look for the second character or the shared/split-screen view. If the game asks Player 2 to choose or confirm a character, make that selection with the second controller.
- Play the activity. Players can swap among Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. Their different abilities are intended to support cooperative objectives, so move through the activity together and watch for situations in which one character’s capability is needed.
If no join instruction appears, do not repeatedly press random buttons. Pause or return to the mode selection, confirm that both controllers are still assigned separately on the Xbox dashboard, and retry with both controllers connected before entering the activity.

Story Mode versus Toy Box Mode
Both modes support the same local two-player capability, but they serve different purposes. Choosing between them changes the structure of the session, not the player count or the type of network connection.

Shared or split-screen display
Xbox describes the feature as shared/split screen. Both players therefore see the local game through one console and television rather than receiving separate online viewpoints. The precise layout can depend on the activity and the game’s current presentation, but the important limitation is fixed: both people must remain in the same local session.
Woody, Buzz, and Jessie
The co-op setup allows players to swap among Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. Their differing abilities give the pair complementary ways to approach cooperative objectives. If an obstacle or task seems intended for a particular character, try switching rather than assuming the second controller failed to join.

Two-player limit
The Xbox listing specifies two-player co-op. A third controller may be recognized by the console for dashboard use, but that does not establish a third playable slot in Toy Story 3 Complete Edition. Keep the active party to two players.
Troubleshooting when Player 2 cannot join

Because the official listing does not publish a fixed join button, button-specific instructions from another platform or an older build may not match your screen. Follow the text and icon displayed by your copy of the game.
Does Toy Story 3 Complete Edition support online multiplayer on Xbox?
The official Xbox feature list promotes local, shared/split-screen co-op and does not advertise a native Xbox online multiplayer mode. That means you should not expect an Xbox matchmaking lobby or a built-in invite flow that lets a distant friend join your console session. The documented Xbox arrangement is two people sharing one console with two controllers.
Steam’s listing separately includes Remote Play Together. On a PC host, that Steam feature can relay a local split-screen session to another person over the internet. It is a Steam platform feature, not evidence of native Xbox online multiplayer, and it does not change the Xbox setup described here.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S considerations
The Xbox product page lists the game for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On either generation, the practical sequence is the same: connect two controllers, launch the game, enter Story Mode or Toy Box Mode, and use the Player 2 prompt in a playable section.
Backward-compatibility guidance for Xbox notes that offline multiplayer scenarios—including co-op and multiple controllers on one console—are supported when the original game supports them, while warning that individual functionality can vary. If you are running the title through compatibility on a Series console and the behavior differs from the current store description, check that the installed Complete Edition is the Xbox version listed for your console and that the game is fully updated. Do not infer online support from backward compatibility; the documented multiplayer feature remains local co-op.
Managing a co-op session
Start with both controllers connected
Connecting both pads before entering the activity gives the game the clearest opportunity to identify Player 1 and Player 2. It also avoids confusing a dashboard guest assignment with an in-game join request.

Use the prompt instead of a memorized button
Different controller layouts, platform versions, accessibility settings, or updates can change how an instruction is presented. Read the icon and wording shown in your copy. The evidence confirms the join prompt, not a universal button label.

Keep players together
Shared/split-screen co-op is designed for a common local activity. In Story Mode, follow the current mission sequence; in Toy Box Mode, agree on where to explore so one player does not remain outside the active area.
Reconnect methodically
If a controller disconnects, fix the hardware or wireless connection first, then return to the game prompt. Repeatedly restarting the console without checking player assignment can leave the second controller attached to the wrong account or guest slot.
