The behavior most likely to hollow out an online gaming community is normalized toxicity: harassment, hate, and disruptive conduct treated as ordinary multiplayer banter. The damage can be hard to see because many players respond by muting voice chat, leaving matches, or spending less time in a community rather than making a public complaint. That does not mean every gaming community is toxic—or that toxicity alone explains community decline—but it does mean that “just ignore it” can carry a real cost.
What the surveys say about harassment in online games
ADL and Newzoo surveyed 1,971 people representative of the U.S. gamer population aged 10–45 from August 4–17, 2023. In that survey, 76% of adult online multiplayer gamers said they had experienced harassment, down from 86% in ADL’s 2022 survey. Among teens and pre-teens, three-quarters reported harassment, up from 67% in 2022. These are separate age groups, and the questions differed in severity, so the figures should not be read as one directly comparable trend. The survey was conducted before October 7, 2023; it does not measure later events. ADL’s 2023 report combines survey findings with 10 qualitative interviews.

Harassment is not distributed evenly. In the same 2023 survey, 48% of women reported gender-based harassment, and 50% of Black adult gamers reported race-based harassment. Those figures describe the specified groups in this U.S. survey, not all players everywhere.

Why the damage can be difficult to see
Players often protect themselves by withdrawing from the very features that make a game social. In its 2024 report, Take This recorded self-reported responses to toxicity: 44% turned off voice chat to avoid it, 31% left a match after it had started, 27% left a lobby before a match, 21% spent less time in a gaming community, and 19% spent less money. These are reported coping behaviors, not proof that harassment by itself caused lasting community decline. They do show how the burden can fall on people trying to avoid abuse: less communication, less participation, or leaving altogether. Take This’s report discusses those responses.
When someone mutes voice chat, leaves a lobby, or stops showing up, the person responsible for abuse may remain visible while the person avoiding it disappears. That can make a community seem calmer without making it more welcoming. Muting may help someone manage an immediate encounter; it does not address the conduct or restore participation.

Why players may not report abuse
ADL found that only one-third of surveyed adults, teens, and pre-teens reported harassment they experienced or witnessed. Respondents described reporting as tedious or opaque, and some regarded harassment as simply part of gaming. One anonymous participant described receiving a message that a report would be looked into, but no email or clear follow-up. A process that gives little feedback can leave players unsure whether reporting did anything.

It does not establish how much abuse occurred, and a low report count alone cannot demonstrate that a community is safe.

What a more useful response looks like
There is no guaranteed fix that applies to every game. The recommendations and approaches discussed by ADL, Microsoft Game Dev, and a 2024 peer-reviewed study point toward systems that make it easier to prevent, report, and address harmful conduct—not simply advice for targets to leave or mute. When evaluating a game’s approach, look for these practical features:
- Coverage across channels: Rules and moderation should address voice as well as text, since abuse can happen in either.
- Clear, usable reporting: Players should be able to identify the relevant behavior without navigating an opaque process, and receive understandable information about what happens next.
- Rules that name identity-based abuse: Policies should distinguish harassment and hate from ordinary disagreement, and explain how identity-based abuse is handled.
- Both prevention and follow-up: Controls that can limit exposure before harmful content reaches others complement review after a report; neither should be mistaken for a complete solution on its own.
- Age-appropriate controls: Settings, reporting, and guidance should be usable by younger players and caregivers as well as adults.
Microsoft Game Dev’s GDC 2024 moderation article states, “A healthy community keeps your game alive.” It also reports survey findings that over 70% experienced toxic behavior and 92% wanted action. The article says self-reported spending was almost 75% higher on games respondents deemed non-toxic than on games deemed toxic; that is self-reported spend, not published game revenue or proof that toxicity caused a revenue difference.

A 2024 Frontiers in Computer Science study examines operational moderation challenges using literature, stakeholder input, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II data. The game data described in the paper covers one week, February 6–12, 2023, so it helps illuminate moderation challenges but is not a prevalence estimate for all games.
What players can do without taking responsibility for the abuse
Players can use available mute, block, and reporting controls to manage an encounter, and can check whether a game explains its rules and moderation process. If the reporting path is unclear, a concise report identifying the behavior and where it occurred is more actionable than a general complaint. But the responsibility for preventing and addressing harassment belongs to the people and systems that enable and moderate the community; targets should not have to give up voice chat or leave a game to make it playable.
