The Tower of Babel is the story in Genesis 11:1–9: people in Shinar build a city and tower, hoping to make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered. In the story, God confuses their shared language, the building stops, and the people disperse. The passage gives that account; its theological meaning and any connection to a specific historical structure are matters of interpretation.
What happens in the Tower of Babel story?
Genesis opens with everyone speaking the same language. The people settle in Shinar, make bricks and mortar, and decide to build a city with a tower reaching toward the sky. They say they want to make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered across the earth.

The Lord sees the city and tower, confuses their language so they no longer understand one another, and scatters them. The people stop building the city, which is called Babel because the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, according to the story. These events are the passage’s explicit plot.

The passage states the builders’ motives, but readers and commentators draw out different emphases from them. The NABRE notes read the episode as illustrating sinful pride in human achievement, with the explanation of linguistic diversity as a secondary purpose. The NET notes emphasize the people’s resistance to dispersion and describe the story as a polemic against Babylon. These are interpretive frames, not additional events stated by the narrative.

The concern about scattering matters to the plot: the builders present their project as a way to stay together, while the story ends with their dispersal. The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges commentary likewise discusses the wish to make a name and avoid being scattered, reading “make a name” as a desire for renown.
Where is Shinar, and was the tower a ziggurat?
The story locates the settlement in Shinar, which the NET notes identify with Babylonia. The NABRE notes suggest that the tower may refer to Babylon’s chief ziggurat, E-sag-ila, whose name they gloss as “the house that raises high its head.” This is a possible association, not a proven identification of the biblical tower with a surviving or excavated structure.

Why is it called Babel?
Genesis connects “Babel” with the Hebrew word balal, meaning “to confuse,” matching the story’s confusion of speech. The notes also report a Babylonian interpretation of Bab-ili as “gate of god.” The Cambridge commentary describes the Genesis explanation as a popular etymology and distinguishes it from the Babylonian interpretation. The two explanations should not be treated as one certain derivation.
Does Babel explain the origin of every language?
The story presents a common-language beginning and explains the scattering of people through linguistic confusion, but it should not automatically be treated as a scientific account of how every language spoken today arose. In a 2024 study, Melvin Abrillian argues that Genesis 11:1–9 concerns Ancient Near Eastern languages rather than all modern world languages, and should be read with theological rather than simply historical emphasis. That is the article’s argument; the sources cited here do not establish a field-wide consensus on the passage’s scope.

How does the story fit into Genesis?
Genesis 10 has already arranged nations by language before Genesis 11:1–9 presents a common-language beginning and explains dispersion. The NET notes describe this sequence as a feature of the narrative’s arrangement. After Babel, a genealogy from Shem to Abram leads into the ancestral narratives, as the NABRE notes explain. This placement links the account of scattered peoples to the story that follows.
