This distinction matters if you own both consoles or plan to replace a Switch with a Switch 2. Buying the Nintendo Switch edition does not give you a Switch 2 edition entitlement, and buying the Switch 2 edition does not create a Nintendo Switch version for an older console.

What both editions include
The shared feature set is the most important reason not to assume that the Switch 2 version is a fundamentally different game. Nintendo describes the following elements for both listings.
New Classic visual presentation
Both products contain upgraded high-resolution visuals under the New Classic presentation. “Upgraded high-resolution” is Nintendo’s published description; it is not a stated pixel count, output mode, or frame-rate guarantee. The phrase confirms a visual overhaul relative to the original presentation, but it does not establish a measured difference between the two modern console editions.
Arranged music by ZUN
Every BGM track is arranged by ZUN in the New Classic presentation. This music treatment is shared rather than a Switch 2-exclusive feature.

Both versions include an unlimited-lives mode. It is the more forgiving way to approach the game if repeated failures in a traditional bullet-hell structure would otherwise stop your progress. No official product information establishes additional difficulty modifiers or how the mode changes scoring, so those details should not be inferred from the name alone.
Classic mode
Classic mode preserves the original 2002 gameplay. It gives players a way to experience the older rules and feel alongside the New Classic presentation. Because the mode is present in both editions, it is not a reason by itself to choose Switch 2.
Performance: what is verified and what is not
There is no verified performance winner. The official pages do not publish a frame-rate target, measured frame pacing, output-resolution table, loading-time test, or Switch-versus-Switch-2 side-by-side benchmark. Without those figures, claims that the Switch 2 edition is definitively faster, smoother, sharper, or better-performing would go beyond the available evidence.

Frame rate
No named frame-rate statistic is published in the reviewed official material. Do not read the New Classic high-resolution description as an implicit 60-frame-per-second promise, and do not assume that a newer console automatically means a higher target for this particular edition.
Resolution and image sharpness
Nintendo confirms upgraded high-resolution visuals in both editions, but supplies no numerical resolution for either product. There is consequently no official basis for saying that the Switch 2 image has a higher native resolution or a sharper output than the Nintendo Switch edition running on Switch 2.

The Switch 2 product metadata lists TV, tabletop and handheld modes, plus single-system play. Those labels describe the ways Nintendo documents using that product: docked television play, tabletop play with the console’s screen, handheld play, and play on one system.

The supplied Nintendo metadata does not state an equivalent mode list for the Nintendo Switch listing. That omission is not evidence that a mode is absent; it means only that the reviewed listing does not provide a comparable specification. Use the product page for the edition you intend to buy if a particular display mode is essential to you.
Save data and additional content do not transfer
Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “Save data and additional content are not compatible between the two versions.” This is the biggest practical issue for anyone moving from Switch to Switch 2 or owning both editions.
What the warning means
- A save created with the Nintendo Switch edition cannot be treated as a compatible save for the Switch 2 edition.
- A save created with the Switch 2 edition cannot be treated as a compatible save for the Nintendo Switch edition.
- Additional content is also separated; do not assume that purchased or unlocked content in one product will appear in the other.
- Installing the other edition does not turn your existing progress into a shared profile.
Before changing editions
- Identify which product your existing save belongs to. The console alone is not enough if you have bought both listings.
- Decide whether preserving that progress is more important than using the other product.
- Check the exact edition shown in your software library before launching or purchasing again.
- Keep the original edition installed or available if you still need its progress, because Nintendo does not promise a conversion path between the two products.
Nintendo also lists Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud support for the Switch 2 product. Cloud backup can protect saves associated with that product, but it does not override the stated incompatibility between the Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch editions.

The soundtrack player is separate from the in-game music presentation. Version 1.0.6 and platform coverage
Alliance Arts’ version 1.0.6 notice says the update applies across Steam, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 editions. That confirms broad platform coverage for the update, but the notice supplied here does not specify a frame-rate change, resolution change, save-conversion feature, or other edition-comparison result. Keep the game updated on the platform you use, while treating 1.0.6 as a cross-platform version notice rather than proof of a Switch 2 performance advantage.
Which version should you buy?
You own an original Nintendo Switch
Buy the Nintendo Switch edition. It is the product intended for that console and includes the New Classic presentation, Classic mode and unlimited-lives mode. The Switch 2 edition is not playable on an original Switch.
You own only a Nintendo Switch 2
Either listing can be used on Switch 2 only in the sense that the Nintendo Switch edition is marked compatible there; the Switch 2 edition is the dedicated product. If you want the product explicitly built and listed for Switch 2, choose the Switch 2 edition. If you already own the Nintendo Switch edition, Nintendo’s “game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” statement means you should not expect a documented performance upgrade simply from running that edition on Switch 2.
You plan to keep playing on both consoles
Buy according to where your existing progress lives, and remember that the two products do not share saves or additional content. If you require a separate purchase for each console environment, budget for that possibility rather than assuming one listing covers both.
You are deciding mainly on graphics or speed
Do not make the purchase on an unverified resolution or frame-rate claim. Both editions include upgraded high-resolution New Classic visuals, and Nintendo publishes no benchmark that separates them. Platform ownership and save continuity are firmer decision points.

You care about music outside the game
Consider the Deluxe Edition for its New Classic Soundtrack Player and its over-30-track collection from both New Classic and Classic versions. The Deluxe upgrade is about listening content, not hardware performance.

Common buying and setup mistakes
Assuming “compatible with Switch 2” means “the Switch 2 edition”
It does not. Nintendo describes the Nintendo Switch edition as compatible with Switch 2, while separately listing a Switch 2-only product. Check the exact product name before purchasing.
Expecting a save migration
The editions’ save data is explicitly incompatible. Backing up a save to the cloud does not convert it into the other product’s format.
Treating “high-resolution” as a measured specification
High-resolution is the official presentation description, not a published pixel count. Avoid promises about native resolution, upscale method or sharper output unless Nintendo or reproducible independent testing supplies those figures.

Deluxe adds the soundtrack-player application. It is not documented as a faster build, a higher-resolution build or a compatibility bridge.
Using a version number as a benchmark
Version 1.0.6 covers Steam, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PlayStation 5, but the supplied notice does not identify a performance change. Update normally, but do not use the version number as evidence that one console edition is technically superior.
Bottom line for Switch 2 versus Switch
The Switch 2 edition is the only product that runs exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2; the Nintendo Switch edition remains the choice for an original Switch and is marked compatible with Switch 2. Both share the New Classic visual and music treatment, unlimited-lives mode and Classic mode. Saves and additional content do not move between them. Since Nintendo provides no frame-rate, resolution or loading-time benchmark, there is no defensible performance winner. Choose the edition that matches your console and existing save, then choose Deluxe only if the soundtrack-player application and its over 30 tracks are worth the extra content to you.
