Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is the sixth official Touhou Project game, the first Touhou title released specifically for Windows, and the game that starts the main Windows-era chronology. It is a six-stage, single-player vertical danmaku shooter in which Reimu Hakurei or Marisa Kirisame investigates a scarlet mist covering Gensokyo. The 2026 release includes both a historically faithful Classic version and a remastered New Classic version, so newcomers can choose between the original rules and a more accessible presentation.
What is Touhou Koumakyou?
Touhou Koumakyou is the Japanese title of Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, commonly called Touhou 6 or EoSD. The original full release appeared at Comiket 62 on August 11, 2002. It followed five Touhou games made for the PC-98 computer platform and became the first entry developed and released for Microsoft Windows.

That transition makes Koumakyou more than another numbered sequel. It is the point at which the series’ modern visual identity, character vocabulary and many of its familiar systems took shape. Perfect Cherry Blossom is the next numbered main game, so Koumakyou is the practical starting point for following the Windows chronology.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →At its core, the game is a traditional arcade-style shooter: your character flies upward through six stages, destroys enemies and survives increasingly dense patterns of bullets. The action is single-player and vertical, with the screen functioning as a narrow space in which tiny movement decisions matter. The challenge is not simply to fire continuously; it is to read trajectories, find safe gaps and spend limited defensive resources at the right time.

The Scarlet Mist Incident: story and setting
A summer that suddenly turns dark
Gensokyo is having a normally peaceful summer when an unnatural scarlet mist spreads across the land. The haze blocks the sun, leaving affected areas dark and cold. The official synopsis describes the situation plainly: “Gensoukyou has been blanketed in a scarlet mist.” With visibility and daylight disrupted, someone has to investigate the phenomenon rather than wait for it to disappear.
Reimu and Marisa investigate
Reimu Hakurei, the Hakurei Shrine maiden, sets out to find the source. Marisa Kirisame, a magician who lives in the Forest of Magic, begins her own investigation. Their routes lead to the Scarlet Devil Mansion, a conspicuously Western-style supernatural estate at the edge of the incident.
The mansion is an intentional contrast with the eastern folklore associations that dominate much of Touhou. Its residents include vampires, a maid and other youkai, giving the episode a distinct gothic and Western flavor without changing the underlying Gensokyo setting. The factual story premise is straightforward: the mist has a source, that source is connected to the mansion, and the protagonists must fight their way inside to discover what is happening.
Why the setting matters
Koumakyou uses the incident to introduce a memorable location and a group of characters who remain visible throughout Touhou fandom. Sakuya Izayoi, Cirno, Remilia Scarlet and Flandre Scarlet are among the characters noted for continuing popularity. That popularity is a sign of the game’s lasting cultural footprint, not a formal ranking or a sales measurement.
How the gameplay works
The six-stage danmaku loop
Each stage alternates between ordinary enemy formations and boss encounters. Enemies release patterned “danmaku,” or bullet curtains, that can cover large parts of the playfield. Bullets are often arranged in lines, arcs, waves or rotating patterns. You survive by moving through the open spaces rather than trying to destroy every projectile.

The loop is deliberately readable once you learn it: move into position, maintain a useful firing angle, watch the next pattern, and use a bomb when the route is unsafe or your timing is failing. A run ends when you lose all available lives, although the New Classic version adds a separate unlimited-lives challenge mode.
Movement, shooting, bombs and Focus Mode
The current release retains the basic control set expected of a vertical shooter:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Movement: steer the character around the playfield to avoid bullets.
- Standard shot: hold the fire control to attack continuously.
- Bomb: spend a limited-use defensive attack to clear danger or damage enemies.
- Focus Mode: slow the character’s movement, making precise dodges easier.
Focus Mode is especially useful when a pattern leaves only a narrow gap. Normal movement is faster and better for crossing the screen; focused movement gives you the control needed for small corrections. Learning when to switch between those speeds is one of the central skills in Touhou.
Reimu and Marisa are different starting points
You can choose Reimu or Marisa, and each character has two equipment types. Their general strengths are distinct:
| Character | General emphasis | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Reimu Hakurei | Broad coverage and stronger evasion | Her attacks can cover more of the screen, while her handling favors survival and repositioning. |
| Marisa Kirisame | Speed and concentrated firepower | She moves and attacks aggressively, rewarding direct attacks and confident positioning. |
The exact behavior changes with the selected equipment type. Some shots home toward enemies, while others reward aiming directly at a target with high power. Try both characters and both shot arrangements rather than treating the first choice as a permanent commitment: the best option depends on whether you struggle more with positioning, damage output or movement speed.

Spell Cards and the “Item Get” behavior
Koumakyou introduced Spell Cards as a central Touhou system. Boss attacks are presented as named, recognizable patterns rather than anonymous waves, giving each encounter a distinct identity and making practice more meaningful. Learning a Spell Card means learning its timing and safe movement route, not merely memorizing a random stream of bullets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe game also retains the full-power “Item Get” behavior. When your character is at maximum power, moving to the top of the playfield pulls all on-screen items toward you. This rewards skilled players who can safely reach the upper edge and collect resources efficiently. It also creates a risk-and-reward decision: staying high can gather items quickly, but returning to a safer position may matter more when a difficult pattern begins.
A deliberately restrained design
In the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil afterword, ZUN described the design goal as bringing things “back to the starting point” by curbing systems that changed difficulty in obscure ways and focusing on the natural fun of dodging bullets. That philosophy explains why the game remains approachable as a historical entry. It has depth in its patterns and shot types, but its basic rules are easy to understand: move, shoot, dodge and use a bomb before a mistake becomes fatal.
How to play Touhou 6 today
The 2026 product family gives you two ways to experience the game. The following approach works for either version, with the accessibility differences noted below.
- Choose a version. Select Classic if preserving the 2002 rules and presentation is your priority. Select New Classic if you want remastered visuals, rearranged music, modern additions and an unlimited-lives challenge mode.
- Pick a protagonist and shot type. Start with Reimu for broad coverage and forgiving evasion, or Marisa for speed and concentrated power. Test both equipment types in the opening stages.
- Learn normal movement first. Watch the spaces between bullets and move early. Large, controlled movements are usually safer than frantic corrections.
- Use Focus Mode for narrow gaps. Slow movement lets you make small adjustments when bullets approach from several directions.
- Save bombs for genuine danger. A bomb is most valuable when a pattern is about to trap you or when recovering from a mistake would be unlikely. Spending every bomb immediately can leave you without protection later.
- Practice one pattern at a time. Boss Spell Cards are recognizable challenges. Concentrate on where the next opening appears instead of trying to react to every bullet individually.
- Collect items deliberately. At full power, move to the top of the screen to activate Item Get and collect all visible items, but only when the current pattern gives you a safe route.
- Use unlimited lives only as a learning tool. New Classic’s challenge mode removes the pressure of a finite stock of lives, allowing you to study later stages. Return to the traditional format when you want the original risk-and-reward structure.
There is no requirement to master all six stages in one sitting. Touhou’s difficulty is built around repeated attempts: each run teaches the timing of a pattern, the position of a safe lane or the moment when a bomb is preferable to a risky dodge.

Where Koumakyou fits in the Touhou timeline
The five PC-98 games precede it, with Mystic Square immediately before Koumakyou. Because the Windows title resets the technical and presentational foundation, it is commonly treated as the beginning of the main Windows-era sequence rather than simply “game six” in a continuous hardware lineage.
Perfect Cherry Blossom follows as the next numbered main game. Later Windows entries build on the approach established here: a vertical danmaku structure, character-specific shot choices, named Spell Cards and a setting where each incident introduces a new location or group of supernatural characters. You can play the later games without finishing Koumakyou, but starting here makes the evolution of those systems easier to recognize.
The game’s influence is therefore historical as well as mechanical. It carries forward the fundamentals of the earlier games while establishing the visual, character and system vocabulary that many subsequent Touhou works use as their reference point.

Which version should you choose?
Choose Classic when authenticity is the point
Classic is the right choice if you want to see how the 2002 Windows game actually played, including its original audiovisual character and Japanese text. It is also the clearest option for comparing Koumakyou directly with later historical discussions of the series, because it does not layer modern systems over the original rules.
Choose New Classic when learning or accessibility matters
New Classic is more practical for a first attempt if you prefer high-resolution art, remastered music or one of the listed non-Japanese languages. Its unlimited-lives challenge mode lets you reach later patterns without repeatedly restarting from the beginning, which is useful for learning stage layouts and Spell Cards. The additional systems mean it is not a frame-for-frame replacement for Classic, but the central movement, shooting and dodging loop remains recognizable.
Buy the combined product when you want both perspectives
Because Standard already includes both versions, you do not need to choose between preservation and modernization at the product level. You can learn in New Classic, then switch to Classic to experience the original structure, or reverse that order if historical fidelity is your main interest.
Why Touhou Koumakyou still matters
Koumakyou is the easiest Touhou game to describe as a bridge. It connects the five PC-98 releases to the long Windows sequence, introduces or establishes systems that became series touchstones, and presents a setting and cast that remain recognizable more than two decades later.
Its importance does not depend on treating it as the hardest or most elaborate shooter in the series. The appeal is the clarity of its foundation: patterned bullets that reward observation, character choices that change how you solve a stage, Spell Cards that turn boss attacks into learnable problems, and Item Get behavior that rewards confident play. New Classic makes those ideas easier to approach, while Classic preserves the form in which Windows-era Touhou first became established.
If you are asking “What is Touhou Koumakyou?” the shortest accurate answer is: it is Touhou 6, the 2002 Windows debut, and the Scarlet Mist Incident told through a focused six-stage danmaku game. That combination is why it remains the natural historical entry point for the modern Touhou series.
