To get a Totem of Undying, defeat an evoker. Evokers appear in woodland mansions and raids, and each defeated evoker is a potential source of this one-use lifesaving item. What the Totem of Undying does
A Totem of Undying is a held item rather than passive armor. It only helps when it is in one of the hand slots at the instant damage would otherwise kill you. Keeping one somewhere in your inventory is not enough.

- Move the totem to your main-hand or off-hand slot before entering a dangerous situation.
- If incoming damage would be fatal, the item springs into action and prevents that death.
- The totem is consumed during the activation, so it cannot protect you from a second lethal hit.
This makes the item most valuable before a known risk: an evoker encounter, a raid, a dangerous exploration trip or a deliberate test. Treat every carried totem as a single emergency attempt, not as permanent immunity.
Where Totems of Undying come from
Woodland mansions
Woodland mansions are the exploration route. Find a mansion, search its rooms and upper floors, and defeat the evokers inside. The achievement guide identifies upper-floor evokers as a possibility, so clearing only the ground level can leave a source of totems undiscovered.

A mansion trip concentrates the danger in one structure. You must travel to the building, navigate unfamiliar rooms and manage several fights without assuming that every room contains an evoker. Once the mansion’s evokers have been defeated, that particular clearing is not a repeatable supply route; obtaining more totems requires another evoker encounter elsewhere.
Raids
Raids are the renewable combat route. Start and complete raids, then kill the evokers that appear. Minecraft’s official inventory article states that “the Evokers who lead these raids will always drop a single totem of undying when they die.” The practical result is one totem for each raid evoker you successfully defeat, subject to the raid’s actual composition.
Raid composition is difficulty-sensitive. The cited advancement guide lists evokers, vexes and witches in raids on Normal and Hard difficulties. Edition, version and difficulty can change which enemies appear and how many confrontations you face, so do not treat a fixed number of evokers per raid as universal.

Choose a mansion when you want an expedition with a defined destination and are prepared to clear unfamiliar rooms. Choose raids when you want a repeatable source and can maintain a reliable combat area. In either case, the decisive step is defeating evokers, not merely finding the structure or starting the event.
How to find and fight an evoker
Recognize the threat
Evokers are dangerous because they combine direct attacks with summoned hazards. The official evoker article describes two signature behaviors: summoning vexes and producing ground-fang attacks. Vexes can pressure you from unexpected angles, while fangs can punish standing still or committing to a narrow approach.

Prepare before opening the next room
- Armor: Wear your strongest dependable armor rather than entering in equipment reserved for travel.
- Weapon: Bring a weapon you can use accurately under pressure. A reliable hit is more useful than an unfamiliar option that slows you down.
- Food: Carry enough food to recover between encounters and to avoid fighting while unprepared.
- Retreat plan: Know which doorway, corridor or open area you will use if vexes or fangs make the room unsafe.
- Totem position: Put the totem in the main hand or off-hand before the engagement, not after your health has already dropped.
Use movement instead of waiting behind a shield
Evoker design intentionally pressures players to move. Jens, identified in the official article as Minecraft’s chief creative officer, explained that he wanted to force players to move rather than simply stand with a shield and wait. Keep changing position, avoid predictable pauses and use cover or room geometry to create space while you locate the evoker.

- Enter only after your armor, weapon, food and totem are ready.
- Identify the evoker and note the safest route out of the room or corridor.
- Move when fangs appear or vexes close in; do not remain stationary to trade damage.
- Attack during the openings created by your movement, then retreat if the room becomes crowded.
- Confirm the evoker is defeated and collect the dropped totem before leaving the area.
How to use a Totem of Undying correctly
Main hand
The main hand is valid for activation and is easy to verify because the item is visible in your active hand. It is useful when your off-hand is occupied by another item you need for the encounter. The trade-off is that you may have to switch away from your weapon before attacking, so plan the switch before the dangerous moment.
Off-hand
The off-hand is also valid. Many players prefer it because the weapon can remain in the main hand while the totem waits for an emergency. In Java Edition, the off-hand is also the shield position, so equipping a totem there means you cannot equip a shield at the same time. Decide which protection matters more for the specific fight.
Equip it before the fatal hit
A last-second inventory change is not a safe plan. The item must already be held when fatal damage arrives. Before an evoker room, raid wave or risky traversal, stop in a safe moment, move the totem into a hand slot and verify that the change actually occurred.
Replace it after activation
Activation consumes the totem. If you continue fighting after it saves you, put a spare in a hand slot as soon as the situation permits. Carrying several totems is worthwhile for repeated high-risk activities because the first activation does not protect against a later lethal hit.

A practical raid route
Choose the encounter conditions
Raids are repeatable, but they are not identical across every edition, version or difficulty. The cited guide specifically lists evokers, vexes and witches on Normal and Hard. Check the difficulty you intend to use and plan for the enemies that can accompany the evoker instead of budgeting for a guaranteed fixed count.
Prepare a controlled fighting area
Start the raid only when you have a defensible place to move, room to retreat and supplies within reach. Keep the totem equipped before the raid becomes dangerous. A controlled area makes it easier to see fang attacks, respond to vexes and recover after each engagement.
Prioritize evokers when they appear
Scan for the evoker rather than assuming the most visible enemy is the most urgent target. Its vex summons and ground-fang attacks can make the battlefield progressively harder to occupy. Move continuously, create distance when necessary and return to the evoker when you have a safe attack window.
Collect and account for each drop
After an evoker dies, pick up the totem before moving on. Store it safely when the raid ends, replace any consumed totem and keep a separate spare for the next encounter. The official description supports a single totem drop from an evoker leading a raid; it does not establish a universal number of evokers or total totems for every raid.
A practical woodland-mansion route
Plan for exploration, not a single doorway
A mansion is a large structure with multiple rooms and floors. Enter with enough food, equipment and time to search methodically. Mark or remember cleared rooms so you do not repeatedly expose yourself to the same corners while trying to determine whether an evoker remains inside.

Search upper floors as well as obvious rooms
Evokers can appear on upper floors according to the achievement guide. Include those floors in your plan, and do not leave after clearing only the most accessible level. Keep the totem equipped before opening rooms where an evoker may be waiting.
Use doorways as decision points
Pause outside each unfamiliar room, check your hand slot and identify a retreat direction. If vexes appear or fangs cut off the approach, back out along the route you prepared instead of becoming trapped in a small room. Once the evoker is defeated, collect the totem and continue the search only when your equipment and food are ready.

Troubleshooting: why the totem did not save you
It was in the inventory, not a hand
The most common mistake is carrying the item without holding it. Move it to the main hand or off-hand before the next dangerous hit. A totem in another inventory slot cannot activate.
You were holding a different item at the moment of damage
Check the active hand immediately before entering combat. If you switched to a weapon, tool or other item after preparing the totem, the totem was no longer in a qualifying slot. Re-equip it before continuing.
The totem had already been consumed
One activation uses the item. After it saves you, the original totem is gone; equip a spare rather than assuming the same item can trigger again.
You expected a shield and a totem in the same off-hand slot
In Java Edition, a shield and a totem compete for the off-hand. If the shield is equipped, the totem is not being held there. Move the totem to the main hand or choose the shield for that encounter.
You expected a fixed raid yield
Raid composition is difficulty- and edition-sensitive. The available guide confirms evokers on Normal and Hard but does not establish one universal evoker count. Treat each defeated evoker’s drop as the confirmed source rather than planning around an assumed total.
You are relying on an effect-duration chart from another version
The exact regeneration, absorption, fire-resistance durations and related effect details are version-sensitive. The evidence here establishes the core behavior—preventing fatal damage once—not a version-neutral duration table. Verify mechanics against documentation for the exact edition and version you play before building a strategy around precise timers.
Edition, difficulty and version cautions
The Totem of Undying was added in the Exploration Update in 2016. Its central acquisition and activation rules are clear: evokers are the source, evokers occur in mansions and raids, and the item must be held when fatal damage arrives. Details around raid composition and the secondary effects shown after activation can vary with edition, difficulty and version.
For a current world, record the edition, game version and difficulty when planning a farm or challenge. Do not transfer a raid-yield table, an evoker-count claim or an effect-duration list from an unrelated version without checking that it applies to your setup.

- Locate the totem in your main hand or off-hand.
- Confirm the other hand is configured the way you intend, especially if you use a shield in Java Edition.
- Equip strong armor and a dependable weapon.
- Carry sufficient food.
- Identify a retreat route before confronting an evoker.
- Expect vexes and ground-fang attacks.
- Carry a spare totem for continued high-risk activity.
- After activation, replace the consumed item before re-entering danger.
