Total War: WARHAMMER III’s Lords of the End Times is being positioned as more than an expansion for existing players: Senior Game Director Richard Albridge told Shacknews that buying one of its featured Legendary Lords can give a newcomer access to the Immortal Empires campaign without owning the base game. That access claim comes from the interview; check the live store listing for current purchase and platform terms.
How the DLC can serve as an entry point
In an interview published by Shacknews on October 5, 2026, Albridge said the team saw an opportunity to use the volume of content in Lords of the End Times to bring new players into the series. He described the release as “the biggest DLC we’ve done to date”—the developer’s characterization, rather than a quantified comparison.

More practically, the interview says players can access Immortal Empires by purchasing one of the featured Legendary Lords without owning Total War: WARHAMMER III. The four named options are Nagash, Thanquol, Glottkin, and Boris Todbringer. The interview is the source for this access arrangement; it does not establish every platform restriction or the current terms of any store listing. Read the Shacknews interview with Richard Albridge.
For someone deciding whether to start here, the appeal of a particular lord and faction matters as much as the access route. The interview also reports more than 100 Legendary Lord factions playable in Immortal Empires after the DLC’s release; that is Shacknews’ reported count, not an independently audited current total.

What comes with the paid DLC—and what is free
The paid Lords of the End Times content should not be confused with the accompanying free game update. Creative Assembly’s August 17, 2026 update announcement lists these free additions and changes:
- A major Vampire Counts rework.
- Neferata as a free Legendary Lord.
- Major new End Game content.
- An overhaul of Victory Conditions.
- Updates to Lores of Magic.
- An overhaul of the Immortal Empires campaign flyby.
Those features are part of the free update, not a list of benefits exclusive to buying the DLC. Creative Assembly described the update as one of the game’s biggest ever. Its announcement does not provide a standalone statistic for the update’s scale. See Creative Assembly’s update announcement.

What the release may signal for future content
Albridge framed Lords of the End Times as unusually large and said standalone faction DLC could create modular opportunities alongside full game updates and patching. That suggests a possible approach to future releases, not a promise that any specific type of DLC or schedule will follow.

The interview supports the idea that a featured Legendary Lord can be a way into Immortal Empires, but it does not give a complete ownership guide for every store or platform. Before purchasing, confirm the live listing’s requirements and the content attached to the specific edition you are considering. If you already own the base game, compare the DLC’s paid content with the free update features above so you know what your purchase adds.
